Humane Society receives $10,000 from ASPCA Grant award provides cats at the Humane Society with improved housing

The South Wood County Humane Society is the recipient of a $10,000 grant through The ASPCA® (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) Northern Tier

Shelter Initiative, which will provide housing improvements for cats waiting for new forever homes. “The Humane Society provides safe shelter for 125 cats every single day,” said

Executive Director Bridget Chariton. “These funds will ensure the most comfortable and

stress-free housing during their stay.”

“The ASPCA is proud to support the South Wood County Humane Society in updating their shelter to provide larger housing units for the animals in their care. The renovations will not only create a more enriching living environment but will also increase South Wood Humane

Society’s capacity for care,” said Michael Barrett, Vice President of Grants Management at the ASPCA. “This is a terrific example of how the Northern Tier Shelter Initiative Grant helps

local shelters improve the lives of animals.”

The initiative features several projects including: the installation of portholes to cages on the

adoption floor, a new bank of kennels with side litter box compartments and new play equipment for the free roaming and visiting rooms. Installing portholes in the adoption room

cages will double the square footage of housing space, offering more room, the ability to socialize with another cat and more efficient cleaning for staff and volunteers. The new bank

of kennels with side compartments will allow shy cats to feel more comfortable on the adoption floor by providing an area to hide if necessary. Finally, the new play equipment is

designed to allow for daily sanitization which will reduce the spread of illness for cats housed

in the free roaming rooms.

Visitors are welcome to view the improvements during open lobby hours.

more about K-9 Toro, an 8 year old

German Shepherd.

What is the length of K-9 training?

K-9s begin training at 2 months old and

lasts until 2 years old. Officers receive 2

months of intensive training with dog and

receives continuous training from then

on. The more training the dog gets, the

more effective the officer will be.

What do you like best about working with

Toro?

The loyalty from having my partner there

all the time.

What is the most challenging part about

having a dog for a partner?

Toro can’t be a normal dog because he

is always training and working there is no

separation of work and personal time.

He can’t be spoiled like a normal dog,

receiving table scraps or treats, because

it would interfere with his work.

Where does Toro sleep?

Toro has his own room in our home.

When the space is needed for family

gatherings Toro doesn’t take kindly to

moving to a smaller space.

What is the most important think you would

like the public to know about K-9 officers?

Although Toro is a canine, he is an

officer of the law, carries a badge and

wears a bullet proof vest.

Thank you Officer Pidgeon for taking

time to speak with SWCHS and special

thanks to both of Officer’s for their

service.

Did You Know…

Thanks to the citizens of Wood County,

the Sheriff's Department has two K-9's.

Deputies Brandon Christianson and

James Pidgeon are certified K-9 police

dog handlers and have both attended

highly specialized K-9 police dog training

at Southern Police Canine, Inc., one of

the largest private Law Enforcement dog

training facilities in the world located in

Spring Hope North Carolina. During the

deputies training there, the two K-9s

were specifically matched to their pro-

spective handlers. The training focuses

on harnessing the dog's greatest attrib-

utes for police work: the ability to track

and detect suspects and intimidate them

psychologically.

There is a K-9 unit available on most

shifts. The K-9's are trained in narcotic

detection, patrol apprehension, tracking,

and are what is termed 'full service' dogs.

The K-9’s consist of German Shepherds

named Toro and Ace. Demand for K-9

presentations to various groups and

schools remains high. People of all ages

enjoy the opportunity to see the K-9's

and hear of their exploits. The K-9s

seem to enjoy all the attention lavished

upon them at these presentations. The K

-9’s drug work is the highlight of their

deployments as the K-9 team works

hard for the Central Wisconsin Drug

Task Force. Cocaine and heroin seem to

be in high demand in the area and it

shows up in the frequency that we are

called to look specifically for it. The K-9's

are highly regarded for their tracking

ability and are called upon to look for

lost people, drunk drivers fleeing the

scene, and burglars. The K-9s' ability to

locate small items thrown away during

crimes are always put to the test,

successfully.

Beth Peabody’s SWCHS Pet Care

Coordinator recently spoke with Wood

County Deputy James Pidgeon to learn Get your Local & Lovin’ It Mini Magazine at South Wood County Humane

Society! $5 of each book sold through the shelter will be donated back to SWCHS!

The Store Guests Help To Raise

Money For The

Humane Society Team Schierl Companies made a difference in our com-

munity by helping the animals at the Humane Society of Portage County. During the “I Bought a Bone” campaign,

which ran in April, guests of The Store convenience store purchased paper bones for $1,$5 & $10 each. The bones

were hung up inside the store locations and wallpapered many. With the community’s help, Team Schierl companies raised $3,600.00 for the South Wood

County Humane Society.

“100% of the Buy A Bone campaign directly benefit

animals at South Wood County Humane Society. Specifically, funds help to provide necessary vaccines and

medical treatment for animals needing rehabilitative care. On behalf of the Humane Society’s staff, Board of

Directors and volunteers, I would like to thank those in our community who participated in this campaign. Your support is greatly appreciated.” Bridget Chariton -

Executive Director

Team Schierl Companies (TSC) was established in 1956

by Butch (John) Schierl in the home heating oil business. TSC is currently owned and operated by John’s three

sons, Tim, Fritz and Bill Schierl. TSC operates 40 retail locations in Wisconsin and the upper peninsula of Michi-gan focusing primarily in service industries. In “Building

Tomorrow Together,” Team Schierl Companies employs approximately 480 Associates between The Store,

Subway, Schierl and Hartje Tire & Service Centers, Schierl Oil, Cousins Subs, and Team Administration with

annual sales of approximately $120 million. For more information visit www.teamschierl.com or call

BE A FOSTER SAVE A LIFE In 2015, our network of foster volunteers helped to save the

lives of 70 animals! We need loving homes like yours to

continue helping these animals in need of extra time and care.

Foster Volunteer FAQs

What kind of animals need foster care?

• Puppies and kittens under two months old

• Mothers with nursing litters

• Dogs or cats with medical conditions or injuries

• Special needs fosters

Can I become a foster parent if I have pets?

Yes, we welcome pet owners as foster volunteers. Please

keep in mind that there is always a health risk when exposing

your pets to other animals, in any setting. However, the risk

is minimal if your pets are vaccinated and in good health.

How long do animals stay in foster care?

The typical foster stay is two weeks to two months,

depending on the needs of the individual animal(s) in your

care. The timeframe of each foster situation will be discussed

with you ahead of time.

What expenses are involved with foster care?

Foster families provide housing, food, bedding and toys for

the animals in their care. They also provide exercise,

socialization and lots of love! The Humane Society provides

all medical care for animals in foster homes, including

vaccination, medications and spay/neuter surgery.

SWCHS volunteer, Anna Jinsky, 12 years old, was awarded the

Wisconsin Junior Heroes for Animals award through Badger

Rescue Animals Transport Service in January.

Medical Sponsorship

Every year millions of puppies and kittens are born; a

number far greater than the number of people willing to

adopt them. Spaying/neutering your pet is a step toward

helping to control pet overpopulation in our area. In both

cats and dogs spaying/neutering can reduce the risks of

certain disorders and cancer.

How can YOU help? For $65 you can sponsor a pet’s surgery. A sign will be

placed on a pet’s kennel indicating to a potential adopter

that they will receive a discount toward that pet’s spay or

neuter.
