What is Web 2.0?

• Web-based tools that run in a browser – NO SOFTWARE INSTALLATION required

• Content is accessible from anywhere

• Easy to edit

Why are many Web 2.0 sites blocked?

• Security concerns because on some sites any user can edit

• HOWEVER, as the creator, you have the choice of how public or private these sites are.

• These are real world, 21st century tools, and students are using them with or without us.

Wikis

• Web pages that are easy to edit

• Instructional uses:– Class web pages– Online textbooks– Class notes or study guides– Book discussions– E-portfolios

Blogs

• Online journals with one primary author and ability to comment

• Instructional uses:– Formative assessment

(Q&A, reflective writing)– Book talks– Parent communications– Professional learning dialogue groups

Document Sharing

• Online versions of Office-like tools (Word, Excel, PPT)
