With the safety, welfare and health of dogs in the shelter being paramount, it is our policy to house new dogs in an individual pen for approximately 10 to 14 days. This allows our Kennel Consultants to ensure that a dog is not suffering from any contagious disease and to assess its general well-being and temperament before moving it to a section containing other dogs.
If you find a stray or abandoned dog, or if you have problems with a dog you have
rehomed, please telephone 99683775 BEFORE bringing the dog to the shelter.
This will allow us to check if we have a suitable single pen available to take the dog on that day, and it may save you a wasted journey. In the event that the shelter is full, we will ask you to keep the dog and phone us back in a couple of days’ time when we may be in a better position to accommodate the dog.
The shelter is open to the public between 7am and 12 noon daily.

THE SKY WAS THE LIMIT FOR ERIN !! When Erin Wallace went to Party in the Park at Episkopi last year she
won a raffle prize - not the usual bottle of whisky, but a free sky dive
courtesy of the Cyprus Parachute Centre! Being the plucky person that
she is, Erin looked forward to the challenge and seizing the opportunity,
she decided to get sponsors for doing the sky dive and donate the money
raised to PAWS Dog Shelter.
After having been postponed by the organisers, the sky dive took place
on 2nd May this year and before it Erin admitted to being a little nervous
but said she was glad that she was doing it ‘for such a good cause’.
Surprisingly, the plane which she was to jump from, was very narrow
and she could almost touch both sides of it simultaneously. It was, of
course, a tandem jump with Erin suited up and strapped to an
experienced member of the forces. During training, Erin had been told
that when the doors of the plane opened, ready for their exit, she would
be hanging in mid-air and she was! Once they launched, the initial speed
of their descent was around 125 mph. After a very neatly executed
landing, Erin’s verdict was ‘what an amazing experience’.
The total sum raised by Erin raised was €725, which is a fabulous
amount. She even managed to get friends in the UK to sponsor her.
PAWS Dog Shelter would like to record a massive vote of thanks on
behalf of the dogs to the very courageous, bubbly, thoughtful and
generous Erin.

George and Lassie
George and Lassie came to the shel-ter a month apart but obviously were from the same litter. Both had the same calm and soft temperament and it was such a relief when Ben and Lindsay said they would adopt George. Then as soon as they saw photos of Lassie they agreed to adopt her as well. It was an emo-tional but happy farewell at the air-port.
Ben and Lindsay say, “Thank you to the Paws Dog Shelter team for George and Lassie. They are the most well behaved, calm easy going dogs we have ever met. They adapted to their new surroundings with such ease. It was great watching them in-spect their new home and experience exciting things. George and Lassie were meant to be a part of our family.”
Finally, from George and Lassie, “As you can see from the pictures on the right our lives have changed consider-ably from our days at the shelter. We now have a lovely forever home in North Wales and our owners spoil us all the time. Our new home is comfy and we have large beaches to exercise on. We now have the best lives dogs could wish for. Happy, full of fun and, best of all, being part of a happy fami-ly.”

ADOPTING AND FOSTERING FROM THE PAWS SHELTER
This is Jilly and her

Jilly, now called
Honey, is one of the
puppies born at the
shelter.
Adoption arranged
by Zypernhunde
Adopting and Fostering, which is more important ?
Both fostering and adopting are equally as important as they give the
opportunity for a dog that hasn’t had the best start in life to feel the love and
affection that a forever or foster home gives.
We need foster homes for many reasons, i.e.
a dog that is waiting to travel abroad, like Jilly above
a sick dog that needs the quiet environment of a home
a puppy that needs 24 hour care that cannot be provided at the shelter
Adopting from PAWS is a straight forward process and guidance and advice
is on hand throughout the process. We can arrange for the export of your new
dog to the UK or other European countries with the only cost to yourselves
being the flight and crate.
All our dogs come micro-chipped, must be registered at the government vets,
fully vaccinated and spayed / castrated. All we ask for is a small donation to-
wards this to help us cover some of the cost that we incur.

MESSAGE FROM FRIENDS OF CAPCA UK
Hi EVERYONE,
We are all hoping that the UK weather will pick up in the summer months, as the spring has been pretty cold.
EMA our Cyprus Poodle, although coming from Cyprus, prefers the cooler climate as she is now coming into her 11th year.
We have had a lot of our members renewing their memberships, and have received extra donations of £10.00 from M.C. Smith and £40.00 from Nicola Reasbeck, as well as receiving more standing order dona-tions. Many thanks to them all for their kind support.
We visited the kennels on the 29th April, and we would like to say what a great job you are all doing. Everything was clean and tidy and the dogs seemed very contented.
We hope to be back in September.
Best wishes ,
PAULINE, FRED and EMA xxx

For a variety of reasons a lot of hunting dogs in Cyprus end up in shelters .
Hounds are perhaps the oldest type of hunting dog, with some hunting by sight
and others by scent. The important thing is that these dogs also make good pets.
Here are examples of some of the hunting dogs who have come to PAWS.
Please note that some of the dogs featured may be mixed rather than true breed,
but have fantastic natures none the less.
Pointers are described as eager to learn,
always motivated and balanced. They are
gentle, sensitive dogs and are good with
families and children. They can excel in
agility and obedience and are energetic and
fun-loving. Their alert nature makes them
excellent watchdogs, sounding the alarm at
anything out of the ordinary.
The Segugio Italkiano is a medium-sized hunting
hound with a coat that can be rough or smooth, in a
range of colours from cream to red and black and tan.
The Segugio Italiano is a quiet breed, tending towards
cautious, though its natural intelligence makes them
trainable.
The Beagle is popular as a pet, since it is a jolly,
playful and energetic, intelligent, loyal and
affectionate dog. It gets along with other animals
and children. The Beagle can also be a good
warning-dog, since it has the tendency to bark at the
slightest suspicious noise.
The Jura Hounds delight in investigating new and
fascinating territory but they will sniff very nearly
anything, regardless of the fact that it is in their own
territory. They make incredible companions for
youngsters and are highly rated for their friendliness.

DO YOU KNOW ABOUT DOGS ?…
There are a billion dogs in the world, offering many roles for people including herding,
hunting, protection, aiding the handicapped, assisting the police and military, illness
detection and, of course, companionship.
Dogs have a higher hearing range than humans and have an ear mobility which allows
them to pinpoint the exact location of sound.
It is estimated that dogs have a sense of smell up to one million times more sensitive than in
humans. (bloodhounds 100 million) !!
Dogs communicate by barking and howling, but also in more subtler ways such as body and
facial movements, whines, yelps and growls.
They exhibit a social intelligence that is uncommon in the animal world and learn
through simple reinforcement, observation and mimicking human behaviour !!!
