Pets Give More Than FriendshipEven if you’re not a pet lover, it’s easy to see that a pet provides companionship. Accordingto research, a pet can do so much more... • Help your Heart - Blood pressure and cholesterol levels are lower.• Improve Your Mood - Lift your spirits with a purring kitty or a lap sitting pup.• Help you Exercise - No excuses. If you have a dog it needs to walk.. So lace up your shoes. • Provide Social Interaction - Being out with a dog gives people reason to stop and chat.• Offer Emortional Support - Pets (even birds, hamsters or rabbits) are great listeners.

They love unconditionally and always have a listening ear ready for your voice.Volunteer at a local shelter if you can’t own a pet.

DISPELLING THE MYTHS ABOUT SHELTER PETSMyth: Shelter pets are obviously not good pets or else their original owners wouldn’t have gotten rid of them.If the main reason why a pet gets brought to a shelter was because they were a “bad”pet, there would be thousands of empty shelters across the country. There are manyreasons a pet comes into a shelter.• Their owners have passed away• An irresponsible owner didn’t get their pet spayed or neutered, so they found them-

selves with a litter they could not find homes for.• The animal’s owners were abusive or the authorities removed them from a harmful

environment.• An animal was purchased or adopted by someone who did not think before they got

the pet. It did not match to their lifestyle.Think about all the wonderful pets just waiting to be adopted right here

Sweet Border CollieRescue Helps Again!

Cody, a border colliecame to Paws as a stray. Hisactivity level was high and hepretty much scared off poten-tial new pet owners. Boardmember Sandy Nicholsonsuggested Glen Highland Farm in the Catskills, as they have helped other border col-lies from here find great homes. She helped transport him on his long ride to therescue and we got photos of his arrival and of his adoption to his new family...Thanks Lillie for always being there for the black and whites...Paws Loves You.

Second Hand Smoke Affects Pets, TooSecond-hand smoke, also known as environmental tobacco smoke or ETS is clearly associ-

ated with cancer, respiratory and cardiovascular disease in humans. Dr. Timothy Fan, veteri-nary oncologist at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital show a correlationbetween ETS and cancer in pets from researching a handful of studies on the subject. TuftsVeterinary School of Medicine found a strong correlation between ETS and oral cancer andcarcinoma, in cats. Cats living with smokers had a higher incidence of this type of cancer. Why mouth cancer? Since cats groom themselves quite diligently, cats in smoking householdscan lick up carcinogens that have been deposited on their fur.

In dogs, ETS is significantly associated with nasal sinus cancer and weakly associated withlung cancer. Google “how secondhand smoke effects pets” to read more about this importantsafety for your pets.

ITÕS THE LAW! All dogs must be kept on the owner’s property or under the control of the owner at all times. Keep your dog safe and on a leash! Put ID tags on your pet’s collar. U5U4

“Dog,” as his owner named him, was a 9 year oldRottweiler mix. He lived his whole life on the

end of a chain staked outside a barn with a tractor trailertruck cap as shelter. As Pennsylvania law states the sheltermust be able to maintain body heat, this shelter did notcomply with the law. It was too big and would not allowhis body heat to come back to him inside. We can onlyimagine the winters he endured and the loneliness of the24/7 confinement. His owner did not live at the proper-ty and only came one time a day to feed the cows and him.His food was dumped inside his shelter without a bowl onthe damp hay. Water, if spilled, would not be given untilthe next visit, so we know he must have been thirsty.Although his provisions were poor, he maintained afriendly manner with those who encountered him.

A kind man visited the property weekly to check ongas leases for his company and had to walk by “Dog” eachtime he went to the property. He never knew his realname, but he always stopped to say hello and see his wag-ging tail with excitement for a kind word and attention. The man always looked forward to seeing “Dog “ on eachvisit and noticed he was favoring his paw on several visitsa few months before. He then noticed the paw lookedinfected and took a photo on a Friday visit in the begin-ning of December 2012. His girlfriend contacted PawsAlong the River and sent the photo telling of the injuredfoot. On Monday just 3 days later “Dog’s” paw was miss-ing. A photo and phone call was made immediately to theHumane Society from the man. A search warrant wasserved on December 4th.

Upon arriving at the location, the reaction of a dogchained with his paw missing was one of horror and “thiscan’t be happening”. “Dog” was seized and taken forimmediate veterinary care by the Humane Officers at Paws.

Dr. Miller of Kinzua Veterinarian Clinic who helpedtreat this dog, was also in disbelief. What happened? Didthe dog chew off his injured foot? Our questions wereanswered when a phone call came the next morning from“Dog’s” owner. He asked why we had taken his dog. When he was given the news that he was

missing his paw, he replied with an astounding “I know, I cut it off with my jack knife.” “I did what any vet would do!”

Of course this set us on a path to proceed with firstdegree misdemeanor cruelty charges. We gave “Dog” thename “Chance,” as he truly earned the right to have anhonest name and have someone care. There was also thegrueling process of caring for Chance several times a daywith irrigations of his stump and strong dosages of antibi-otics. Our entire staff helped with all the extra work andnoticed the gentleness and softness in Chance’s eyes eachtime we treated him. He was wild at first, but then grewto love the attention. We grew to love him as he wentthrough this struggle back to health. The leg was infectedand we knew it would need to be amputated. He main-tained a sense of gratefulness and never showed any aggres-sion or painful responses. After nearly 5 months of intenserecovery we found him a new forever home. He has hisown couch… an inside home! A plea agreement was madeand the owner only received a reduced charge of a summa-ry and a $300 fine. Of course we are disappointed in theresults.. We feel jail time was warranted for this horrificact. Chance won our hearts and a new home. His deter-mination surely made us proud to have him come intoour lives.

CHANCEA Story of Determination, Caring and Love

Sean, Chance’s new dad, gives him lots of hugs!

Holiday hazards for petsYes, in a few short months those holidays will be here. Not only stressful for you, butfor your pets as well and hazardous. Here’s some tips to help keep the holidays safe.

THE TREE- Cover the tree stand where water is kept so your animals can’t drink. Thepine sap is dangerous if ingested. Secure the tree with wire so it won’t fall over. Try to elim-inate using tinsel. Ornament hooks and ribbon are also items to be cautious with in yourhome. Decorate the bottom half of the tree with plastic or wood ornaments. Unplug thetree when not in use.

THE FOOD- Human feasts are a big part of the holidays, but don’t feel you are depriv-ing your pets if you don’t share. However, table scraps, especially bones, can cause serioushealth problems. Keep all the gifts that contain food off the floor and consider buyingartificial plants. Poinsettias, holly and mistletoe can be very harmful if chewed. A burn-ing can be tipped by a pet so put burning candles in places inaccessible to your pet.

YOUR PET’S WELL-BEING- Try to keep your pet’s daily schedule the same during the busy season. Their comfort level with the holiday hustle and bustle can be very disruptive. Put a shypet away in a quiet place if you are having a party with more people that your pet is used to seeing.

Enjoy the holidays this year with safety and well being in mind for your pet.

PAWS for aNews Brief

Nothing to sneeze at: Asadults, we know howbeneficial our pets can befor our health. The samenow holds true forinfants. According to astudy done in Finland, babies who live in ahouse with a dog or catwere found to have betterimmune systems. Thosechildren required fewerantibiotics and sufferedless ear infections, coughsand runny noses.

Dogs and Classical Music Calming Dogs can sometimes be a challenge especially in a shel-ter. Researchers know that music soothes the human nervous system and new studies reveal that dogs have a preferenceand react differently to different types of music. Many groomers, shelters, and veterinarians are pumping up the vol-ume with classical music and seeing the results. Whether in a shelter or at home, classical music can bring a “zen” likecalm to your family pet too. Paws Along The River is also providing this important enhancement to both the cats andthe dogs in the shelter. We have found that not only are the animals calmer, but it has given our employees a peacefulatmosphere to work .
