Introduction
This document was an assignment for a technical writing class at the
University of Texas at San Antonio during the Fall 2014 term. It is meant to
represent a formal Business plan. The audience of this document includes
graduate schools, employers, and collaborators.
Paw and Purr is an Austin company that offers luxury pet services
such as boarding and veterinary services along with other pet needs all at one
location. Our goal as a company is to provide stress free service for our clients
and their pets. We accomplish all this at our modern facility with our skilled
and passionate staff.
In this business plan we will outline our company’s funding, setup,
and marketing plan in detail. By the end of this business plan we will have
successfully gone over all aspects of our company and outlined our future
plans.

Funding Plan
Introduction
This section is a description of the actions necessary for our company to obtain funding and then control our assets.
Tasks
1. Prepare a business plan
Paw and Purr will need to prepare a business plan. Joy
Grant will compose the business plan along with input
from the other partners. It is expected to take no longer
than two weeks and will cost nothing.
2. Hire an Editor
Paw and Purr will hire an editor to edit the business plan
and other formal documents composed during the
beginning stages of the business. Matthew Scrubbs will
conduct the interviews and select the editor. This
process will take approximately two weeks. The search
will cost nothing and we are prepared to pay the editor
$2,000.

3. Locate capital firms
Our company will need to locate firms in order to fund
our initial start up costs. Jack Smith will be responsible
for locating capital firms. This process will take one week and cost nothing.
4. Contact the firms
We will need to contact the firms and setup meetings to
negotiate a loan. Jack Smith will be responsible for
contacting the firms. This process will take one week and cost nothing.
5. Present to firms
Paw and Purr will present the business plan to firms in
order to apply for a loan. Joy Grant and Matthew
Scrubbs will present the company’s business plan.
Presenting will take three weeks and cost approximately
$500 for office supplies and gas.
6. Negotiate
We will need to negotiate the terms of the loan with the
firms in question. Jack Smith will be in charge of
conducting the negotiations in favor of the business.
This process will take five weeks and cost approximately
$1,000 for expenses.
7. Contract
Paw and Purr will contract a firm for the loan after
negotiations have taken place. Joy Grant will obtain the
contract for the loan. This will take one week. There will

be no immediate costs but future payments with interest will be made.
8. Open accounts
Paw and Purr will open accounts in the name of the
business. Brittany Kirkham will be the primary account
holder with the other partners having access to their
positions designated account. This will take one week in
order to open all accounts. Although this task will not
cost anything the company will be depositing monthly profits into the accounts.
9. Hire an accountant
We will hire an account that will file the business’ taxes,
keep records on the company’s expenses and profits
quarterly. Joy Grant will conduct eh search, interviews,
and final selection of the accountant. This entire process
will take two weeks and we are prepared to pay $4,000 a year for their services.
10. Develop purchasing procedures
Paw and Purr’s partners will need to develop purchasing
procedures for necessary inventory such as kennels and
veterinary supplies. Dr. George Johnson and Matthew
Scrubbs will be the main developers along with Joy
Grant as the supervisor of the task. This process is expected to take six weeks and cost nothing.

11. Locate charity
The company will set aside five percent of its profits
each applicable quarter for a designated charity. Joy
Grant will be responsible for locating a suitable charity
that is animal oriented. This process will be redone every year and will cost five percent of quarterly profits.
12. Acquire proper computer software
Paw and Purr will need to acquire the proper computer
software to make conducting inventory and calculating
expected sales efficiently. Joy Grant will search for and
purchase the proper software for the business. This process will be rather fast and cost $500.
13. Attend annual workshops
Each year the staff of Paw and Purr will attend financial
workshops in order to make the business more efficient
and profitable. Matthew Scrubbs will be responsible for
setting up the workshops and notifying key employees
for attendance. This will cost an estimated $200 per
year.
14. Hire a consultant
Paw and Purr will be looking to invest some of its profits
in the future. Brittany Kirkham will interview prospective
consultants and select one based on experience and skills.
The search and selection will take a maximum of two
weeks and depending on profits gained at the time we
will pay the consultant $2,000 with addition of quarterly
investments dependent on profit.

15. Contract a payroll company
Paw and Purr will look into the possibility of contracting
a payroll company. Joy Grant will research costs and
benefits. The search will take four weeks and costs will be researched.

Setup Plan
Introduction
This document is a description of the tasks necessary to ready real estate, tools, equipment, employees, and products.
Tasks
1. Find an agent
Paw and Purr will find a real estate agent. Joy
Grant will search for and hire the agent based on
skill and experience. The search will take one week
and we are ready to compensate the agent with his
or her stated commission.
2. Tour properties
Once a suitable agent has been hired we will
begin to tour properties in search of a facility site.
The agent will be in charge of setting up tours and all
partners are expected to attend. The search is
expected to take anywhere from three to twelve weeks and will cost nothing.
3. Negotiate lease
Partners of the company along with the agent
will work on negotiating the leases of selected
properties. All partners will take place in the
negotiations with the agent. They are expected to
take one to three weeks and cost nothing.

4. Remodel
Paw and Purr will remodel the property to fit all
promised modern accommodations and equipment.
Joy Grant will oversee the remodeling. It will be
given a budget of $20,000 including the fees for interior designer and architect services.
5. Hire interior design specialist
We will look to hire an interior designer to help
achieve the most modern and comforting
atmosphere in the facility. Brittany Kirkham will be
in charge of signing off on all design aspects. The
design and remodel will take three to eight months
and the designer will be compensated with $2,500.
6. Hire an architect
During the remodeling an architect will evaluate
the space and help to make the design of the facility
more efficient and welcoming. Matthew Scrubbs will
be working with the architect to demonstrate the
requirements of the business. The remodeling is
expected to take three to eight months. The architect will be compensated $2,000.
7. Buy furnishings
The business will need to be furnished properly
with the help of the design specialist. Brittany
Kirkham will be purchasing all furnishings. This will
be part of the remodeling which is expected to take
three to eight months and total budget allowed for furnishings is $15,000.

8. Arrangement of utilities
Paw and Purr will look to set up utilities will a
provider. Joy Grant will be responsible for setting up
all utilities. This is expected to cost $400 a month and take only a day.
9. Buying veterinary equipment
Paw and Purr’s veterinary branch will set up
purchasing accounts with several suppliers. Dr.
George Johnson will oversee the contracts and
propose budgets for the branch. This is expected to
be a life long effort cost the company various amounts over the years.
10. Attend trade shows and conferences
Paw and Purr key staff members will be offered
to attend various shows and conferences throughout
the year dependent of their area of employment. Joy
Grant will post schedules of these events quarterly.
This is expected to be yearlong and has a budget of
$800 per year.
11. Hire staff
Paw and Purr is a large business in need of a
variety of employees. All partners will take part in
the hiring process and choose the employees of their
department. This entire process will take two months
and although the interviewing and hiring will not cost, later salaries will vary depending on position.

12. Training
All employees will undergo veterinary
training and communication training. Joy
Grant will oversee training. The training
process itself should take no more than two weeks in each field.
13. Hire a Lawyer
Paw and Purr will need to contact local
law firms to create pet and client rights
and liabilities document. Dr. George
Johnson will contact local law firms and
draw up documents. This process will take
four weeks and cost $4,000.

Marketing Plan
Introduction
This section is a guide to publicizing our products and services.
Paw and Purr provides luxury pet services, which include boarding and
grooming, main purpose of keeping pets safe and comfortable during the
owners’ time away. Our services attract a clientele who are unsatisfied with
the service provided at common commercial stores and are willing to spend
more money than average on their pet for high quality care. Paw and Purr
provides the benefits of high quality care and service with a personal touch
making every experience pleasurable for both the pet and the client.
Tasks
1. Hire a marketing consultant
As a new business paw and purr will need extensive
marketing to our target clients, which can be facilitated with a
consultant. Brittany Kirkham will interview and select the
consultant. The overall search for a consultant will take up to
two weeks and he or she will be compensated $2,000 for their
services.
2. Contracting an ad agency
With the advice of the consultant we will work to
contract an ad agency. Joy Grant will research the agencies.

This process is expected to take two weeks and cost up to
$300 a month.
3. Hire an artist
Our business will need the services of an artist to provide
adequate marketing icons such as a logo. Joy Grant and
Jack Smith will interview and select an artist. This
process will take one week and we are prepared to
compensate the artist $200.
4. Contact radio stations
Paw and Purr will contact several radio stations for
advertising. Jack Smith will contact local radio stations
and acquire airtime. This process will go on for the first
three to six months of business. We are prepared to
compensate the radio stations will in house advertising
at the facility or $100.
5. Contact television providers
We will contact several local television providers and
negotiate a price for advertising. Jack Smith will also
handle the portion of marketing. This process will be
used until a reliable clientele is produced. We are ready
to pay $300.
6. Make social media accounts
We will use social media to advertise events and specials
along with keeping in touch with clients. Matthew
Scrubs will be the supervisor of all social media sites and
keep all posts current. This will be a continuing means
of marketing and will cost nothing.

7. Attend local shelter events
Paw and Purr looks to support the local shelters and will
attend events. Joy Grant is responsible for notifying
employees of events. This will be an ongoing event and
cost a small percentage of profits.
8. Attend animal related events
We will market the business during local dog walk
events and others that are animal related. Joy Grant is
responsible for registering the company to participate in
events and notifying employees. This will be an ongoing
service and cost $400 a year.
9. Make a youtube.com account
Paw and Purr will market themselves on the web
through youtube.com by posting ad videos and tours of
the facilities. Joy Grant and Jack smith will work
together to create and manage this account. This is a
business long marketing spot. We plan to spend no more
than $200 a year.
10. Hire a web designer
Paw and Purr will manage a web site where all of our
information will be located. Jack Smith will hire a web
designer to make the site elegant and user friendly. The
process will take less than a week but will cost $200.
