Sergio Paulo contemplava as águas azuis

do mar Mediterrâneo, profundamente absortoem seus pensamentos. Ele estava triste eperturbado. Mas por quê estava assim, ele se

perguntava. Tinha tudo oque um homem podiadesejar. Ele era o pró-

cônsul romano, governadorda Ilha de Chipre. Tinhauma linda e espaçosamansão, e todo o luxo eprazer material quepudesse desejar, mas eleainda não estava satisfeito,faltava algo.

Na sua procura porverdade espiritual, Sergio

tinha começado a escutar um falso profeta judeu chamado Elimas. Mas ainda assim, ogovernador não encontrava paz. "O que é

realmente a Verdade?" ele se perguntava.

Sergius Paulus stood deep in thought on

the terrace of his magnificent villa, lookingout across the clear blue waters of theMediterranean Sea. He was sad and troubled.But why should he be, hewondered. He hadeverything a man could

want. He was the RomanProconsular-Governor of the island of Cyprus. Hehad a beautiful villa andevery luxury and materialpleasure that he could desire.But still he was not satisfied.Something was missing.

In his search for spiritualtruth, Serguis had begunlistening to a Jewish false prophet namedElymas. But still, the Governor had no peace. “What really is the Truth?”

he wondered.



And now, just the other day, he had

heard that some Christians had beentravelling across Cyprus and had arrived

in Paphros! His servants told him theywere preaching how men could have amiraculous spiritual rebirth, and, at onceinterested in hearing more, Sergius hadsent an invitation for these strangers tohave an audience in his court.

The next day, his thoughts weresuddenly interrupted by an attendant whosaid, “Sir, the men have arrived for their

appointment.” Sergius left the terrace andwent down into his villa to meet them.Three Jews, who introduced themselves asBarnabus, his nephew John-Mark, andPaul of Tarsus, greeted him. Sergiuswarmly saluted his close friend andadvisor, Elymas the magician, who hadalso just arrived.

E agora, há alguns dias, ele tinha ouvidodizer que alguns Cristãos estavam viajandopor Chipre, e que tinham chegado a Pafos!

Os seus servos lhe contaram que elespregavam como as pessoas podiam ter umrenascimento espiritual milagroso, e,imediatamente interessado em ouvir mais,Sérgio enviou um convite a estes estranhospara uma audiência na sua corte.

Agora, um dia depois, os seuspensamentos foram subitamenteinterrompidos por um criado que disse:"Senhor, os homens chegaram para aaudiência." Sérgio saiu do terraço e desceu àmansão para recebê-los. Três judeus que seapresentaram como Barnabé, o seu sobrinhoJoão-Marcos e Paulo de Tarso o saudaram.Sérgio saudou calorosamente Elimas, oencantador, seu conselheiro e amigo íntimo,que também tinha acabado de chegar.



After spreading a banquet of food and dryCyprus wine before them, they began to talk.Sergius was delighted to find out that not onlywas Paul a Roman citizen, but that Barnabuswas a native of Cyprus! Then Sergius said,“I’ve heard much about your religion. If youpeople are right, why are you so hated andpersecuted? Everywhere you are spokenagainst!”

Paul answered, “At one time I myself hated Christians so much that I instigated a

nation-wide persecution against them! I brokeinto their houses and had both men andwomen thrown into prison. I tried to forcethem to deny their faith and even had themput to death!”

As Paul went on to describe how he had

been miraculously converted to Christianityon the road to Damascus, Elymas began tosee how intently Sergius was listening to theirwords. Realising that if the Governor wereconverted to Christianity, that he would nolonger listen to his advice, Elymas becamefilled with a jealous rage!

Depois de lhes servir um banquete decomida e vinho seco de Chipre, começaram aconversar. Sérgio ficou fascinado ao saber quePaulo não só era um cidadão romano, mas queBarnabé era natural de Chipre! Então Sérgiodisse: "Ouvi falar muito sobre a sua religião.Se vocês estão mesmo certos, por que é sãotão odiados e perseguidos? Falam contra vocêsem toda a parte!"

Paulo respondeu: "Houve uma ocasião emque eu próprio odiava tanto os Cristãos que

instiguei uma perseguição a nível nacionalcontra eles! Eu entrava à força em suas casas e jogava na prisão tanto homens como mulheres.Eu não só tentava forçá-los a blasfemaremcontra a sua fé, mas até ordenei a sua morte!"

Enquanto Paulo descrevia como tinha

milagrosamente se convertido ao Cristianismona estrada para Damasco, Elimas começou aperceber que Sérgio estava escutandoatentamente as suas Palavras. Percebendo quese o governador fosse convertido aoCristianismo, não escutaria mais os conselhosdele, Elimas ficou cheio de raiva e inveja!



Angrily, Elymas interrupted and began

to contradict Paul and Barnabus. SergiusPaulus was confused. He was interested inthe doctrines of these Christians, yetElymas had been his close associate andadviser for a long time! Who was heto believe?

But when Paul saw that Elymas wastrying to turn the Governor from the faith,he was filled with righteous anger; theHoly Spirit came upon him withgreat power and authority, and herebuked the magician, saying, “You child

of the Devil and enemy of righteousness!Will you never cease trying to pervert the

ways of truth? The Lord’s hand is uponyou, and you shall be blind!” Immediately Elymas cried out that a

dark mist had fallen upon him, and hestumbled about frantically, seekingsomeone to lead him by the hand. Finally

a Roman guard led him out.

Elimas o interrompeu furiosamente ecomeçou a contradizer Paulo e Barnabé.Sérgio Paulo ficou confuso. Ele estava

interessado nas doutrinas destes Cristãos, maspor outro lado Elimas tinha sido seu amigo econselheiro íntimo por muito tempo; emquem ele devia acreditar?

Mas quando Paulo viu que Elimas estavatentando desviar o governador da fé, ficou

muito irado e com razão. O Espírito Santodesceu sobre ele com grande poder eautoridade, e ele repreendeu o encantador,dizendo: "Ó filho do Diabo e inimigo de todaa justiça! Não cessarás de perverter oscaminhos da verdade? A mão do Senhor está

contra ti e ficarás cego!"No mesmo instante Elimas gritoudizendo que uma névoa escura tinha descidosobre ele, e tropeçava por ali freneticamente,procurando alguém que o guiasse pela mão.Finalmente, um guarda romano o guiou para

fora.



Sergius was so astonished by this

miracle that he totally forgot about all the

lies that Elymas had been spouting, andwas convinced that Paul and Barnabus hadbeen telling him the Truth! — And that day,the Roman Governor asked Jesus Christ tocome into his life and make him anew man.

He did not throw off his royal robesand join Paul and Barnabus, travellingwith them in their missionary journeys,but he determined to do what he could: Hewould use his power and authority asGovernor to help the spread of

Christianity in the island of Cyprus, andprotect the little groups of Christianbelievers that Paul and Barnabus hadalready started all across the island, fromSalamis to Paphros.

Sérgio ficou tão surpreso com estemilagre que esqueceu completamente todasas mentiras que Elimas havia falado e seconvenceu de que Paulo e Barnabé estavamlhe dizendo a Verdade! - E nesse dia, oGovernador Romano pediu a Jesus Cristopara entrar em sua vida e fazer dele umnovo homem.

Ele não jogou fora as suas vestes reais ese uniu a Paulo e Barnabé, para viajar comeles em suas viagens missionárias, masficou determinado a fazer o que pudesse: eleiria usar o poder e autoridade comogovernador para ajudar a espalhar o

Cristianismo na Ilha de Chipre, e paraproteger os pequenos grupos de cristãos quePaulo e Barnabé já haviam iniciado por todaa ilha, de Salamina a Pafos.



Though Paul, Barnabus and John Mark leftCyprus afterwards to continue preaching theGospel in other regions, Barnabus and JohnMark soon returned to Cyprus and were

overjoyed to see that, under the favor andprotection of Sergius Paulus, the ChristianGovernor, Christianity was prospering.

Embora Paulo, Barnabé e João Marcos

tivessem ido embora de Chipre depois para

continuarem pregando o Evangelho em

outras regiões, Barnabé e João Marcos logo

voltaram a Chipre e ficaram radiantes ao

ver que, sob o favor e proteção de Sérgio

Paulo, o governador cristão, o Cristianismo

estava prosperando.
