But what is an Atom?

• An atom is…– The smallest form of an element• All atoms of an element have the same characteristics

(i.e. # of protons)

– An atom has 3 sub-atomic particles • Proton (+ charge)• Neutron (no charge)• Electron (-charge)

• REMEMBER, all matter is made up of atoms!

Atomic Mass (or the mass of an atom)

• The mass of an atom is mainly the mass of the protons and neutrons combined

• Electrons barely have a mass compared to protons and neutrons
