Course Description Terms, Rules, and Standards
Typographic SyntaxProcess of arranging elements into a cohesive whole. The oder of study starts with the letter, then progresses to the word, line, column, and finally margin.
LetterExisting in various weights, sizes, and shapes, the letter is a well drawn form exhibiting subtlety and precision. It is the unit that distinguishes one family of type from another.
WordBy defenition, a word can mean anything. It could express an idea, event, or and object. On the other hand, from a design aspect, a word can be molded and formed to look like what it means.
Visual HierarchyThis is the practice of aranging elements of type on the page from the most prominent to the least prominent. The most prominent element on this page is the header at the top of the page. You can tell by the size of the type and the placement of the type.
ContrastIn order to create visually interesting pieces, you must use contrast to set the piece apart. By adding areas of contrast, you are creating an attraction of the eye to that area of the piece. This can work to an advantage in many cases.
GridIn order to create properly organized peieces of art, you must utilize the use of a typographic grid. by using a grid, you are making the piece feel organized while not being boring. As you may have noticed, this piece has been put into a four column grid.
Welcom to Honors Advanced Typography
In this course you will learn the in’s and out’s of typography and the logic behind a page layout. You will learn about the many rules of type, the historical classifications of type, and the parts of the letter, to name a few. Although a demanding class, it is a fun one.
Along with learning everything there is to know about type, you will be given a few projects to help you with the learning process. For example, the final project was this newsletter. This newsletter took a lot of arguing with myself when it came to color and design, but I decided to keep it simple and easy to understand. I really wanted the typography and the layout of the piece to speak for itself.
Another example of a project is the picture on page three. This picture is of the letter A, but it looks like it has white paint splattered on it. On the other hand, the project was the create a “flower letter.” This means the assignment was the take a letter and find a flower that’s name started with that letter. Then we had to mold them together.
Unfortunately, those college dollars with be hard at work because there is a book for the class, but do not get too upset right off the bat. This book is actually very useful. So useful, that I have decided to keep it and to use it in my professional career for referece material. There is so much useful and interesting information in the book that makes it worth the arm and leg you have to pay for it. For example, some of the information in the newsletter came from the book.
Well, welcome yet again, and I hope this newsletter helps you with some of Honors Advanced Typography. Or, maybe it will just peek your interest a bit to explore the world of typography a litter deeper or look at posters and magazines a little bit differently.

Pretty Pretty Machines
The battle of the rally cars continues with the next generation of these two arch enemies. Displayed on the top is the new Mitsubishi EVO X. Looking quite aggressive, it packs quite the aggressive punch with its 296hp and 311ft/lbs of torque. On the other hand, Subaru went for a more refined look. The new Impreza STI, displayed at the bottom, may have a more refined look, but it definately it anything but refined underneath the hood According to Subaru, the new STI will keep itsinfamous horizontally opposed turbocharged four cylinder engine, but it will be beefed up to 305hp and 296ft/lbs of torque. Both will be on sale in the US market soon.
Possibly a new Honda CRX. We would hope so. This is the Honda CR-Z concept, and since it has some resemblance to the old CRX, we are all giddy inside. Ah, long live the ‘80s.
The Saab Aero X concept was partially modeled after fighter jet and an attack helicopter. All we know is that in order to get in to the car, the side panels and roof all lift up on hinges like the cockpit to a fighter jet. So, Maverick and Goose, eat your hearts out.
Excuse me, Hyundai? Thank you for finally growing some balls and making something that with MOVE! This Genesis Coupe Concept is the lastest and greatest thing to ever come out of the minds of the people at Hyundai. With its 310hp V6 and rear wheel drive platform, maybe we could have some fun in this car. The best part though, is that it will be going into production.Welcome to the car world Hyundai.

One Sick Little Car Do you remember the first time you watched “The Fast and the Furious?” Twenty bucks says that after the movie you went home, got on the internet, and started to look at some streetcars. Now I’m positive that the first modified car you came across was the Honda Civic Si and its B16A2 Vtec engine. Drool? I think we all did, but now, the Si is back and it has some new tricks up its sleeve. For starters, the new Civic Si has a whole new design. I know, we all miss the hatch back of a couple of years ago, but the new Si does have some good qualities. The best part is the fact that the boy racer look has been taken out of the design. I know there will be plenty of aftermarket companies that will have a slue of parts available for it by the time I am finished with this article, but let’s just focus on the way it looks when it comes off the lot. Its subtle yet sexy curves are designed to give it a little bit of down force when going around the corners at high speeds. The rear spoiler is not a big monstrosity that screams “look at me, I go fast,” but rather a shorter and smaller accent that’s adds to its sportiness. The car just looks great, and that is not all. It can get up and move too. It may have four doors and a
