JAPAN'S EX·PRINCESSJapan's Princess Sayako has lost her royal status after she married commoner Yoshiki Kuroda, in a ceremony in

Tokyo. Wearing a Western-style white dress and pearls, because she could not exhibit the imperial kimono, thePrincess sipped sake rice wine with her bureaucrat husband. Marriage to Mr Kuroda means Princess Sayako loses hertitle and will have to adjust to a new lifestyle. The ceremony, which took place in Tokyo's stylish Imperial Hotel, was an

5 informal affair by royal standards. The Princess had said her formal farewells to the regal family at the previous weekend. She is Emperor Akihito's

only daughter and becomes the first princess to abandon her title in 45 years. Sayako Kuroda, .as she will now beknown, told a press conference that her mother and father had told her that her family relationships were unchanged. To prepare for her dramatic change of lifestyle, ex-Princess Sayako has reportedly been taking driving lessons and

10 practising shopping at the supermarket. Princess Sayako will lose the dowry she receives for being part of the royalfamily, but this is eased by a $1.2million payment from the state.

AMERICAN OBESITY PROBLEMThe U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that about six out of 10 Americans were either

overweight or obese. Furthermore, the prevalence of obesity almost doubled from about 15 pereent in 1980 to 27pereent in 1999. Dr. J. McGinnis said the current weight statistics predict future problems. "Obesity now will lead to ahigher number of deaths from diabetes, heart disease, stroke and certain types of canear, and increased prevaience ofosteoarthritis."

The CDC noted that most schools have vending machines or snack bars including foods that are largely nutrient-poor and calorie-rich. People are also fess likely to cook for themselves these days. Roughly half of all meals areconsumed outside the home and many of these are from tast foods. "We have become year-by-year an increasinglysedentary society," McGinnis said. "People used to enjoy walking a half-mile or a quarter-mile but now they take the carto go across the street. And instead of walking or playing sports during free time, children sit in front of the TV orcomputer. These are unhealthy habits because their muscles are not moving and transportation has become so easyihat children are driven everywhere." So educating the public about healthy nutrition and exercise is essential, theexperts said. Heafthy foods and more intense physicaf activity in schools are also important.

PRUEBA TIPO 2007-2008STANOBY POWER

Electrical power has changed our lives and given us phenomenal advantages. But do we know just how much powerwe are using when we switch things off or put them into standby mode?

Eledronic devices like TVs, videos or stereos-anything which has a remote control-have to have live componentsto allow you to switch them on remotely, so there's a bit of what's called standby power. Standby power can range

5 between ten or fifteen watts and occasionally beyond, which on its own is not a lot, but, if you get hatf a dozen devices onstandby, that is the equivalent of a 60 watt bulb.

AII around the house we waste power; the modern home is full of equipment Ihat sits 'half on' waiting lo immediatelyspring to life when we ask it. In the 1970s a typical home contained 17 energy-using products; today the number hasdoubled. The rise in popularity of computers and other devices has created a huge need for power; and the large volume

10 of sales has wiped out the effect of energy efficiency measures in new devices. Figures for standby power use in Ihehome are astonishing: TVs alone cost €50 million, and produce a total of 3.1 million tonnes of C02.

If you don't turn your pe off completely, it's always drawing some kind of power. If a million users unplugged IheirPCs, instead of 'hibemating' them, it would save Ihe equivalent of 250 thousand litres of gasoline a day.
