PATTAYA CITY EXPATS CLUB NEWSLETTER December 9, 2011
This Sunday’s Meeting Program
Thailand is affected by
landmines and explosive
remnants of war from both
abandoned explosive ordnance
and unexploded ordnance; the
result of conflicts on its
borders. Thailand still suffers
with the legacy of over 500
km2 of suspected hazardous
areas affected by landmines
and unexploded ordnance, with
people still being injured and
killed by these sleeping killers.
Cambodia is similarly affected
with much of the impacted area being along the
border with Thailand. The Norwegian People's
Aid (NPA) Organization is actively involved in
providing assistance to Thailand and Cambodia
in identifying and eradicating this menace.
This Sunday, we will hear about this problem
and the assistance NPA is providing from Mr.
Lee Moroney, Program Manager for NPA in
Thailand and Mr. Jan Erik, NPA Cambodia.
NPA is organized into four main activities:
Long-term development cooperation
(international), Mine- and explosives clearance
(international), First aid and rescue services (in
Norway), and Refuge, asylum and integration
work (in Norway). Their website at
http://www.npaid.org/en/ notes that 70
countries are affected by landmines and cluster
munitions and NPA currently works in 18 of
them.
Lee was previously the program manager for
Cluster Munitions stockpile Destruction
(Global). As a Member of the Institute of
Explosive Engineers and with his extensive
career in the British Army and within the NGO
world he has operated in many countries
including Thailand, Vietnam, Lao PDR, Sudan,
Iraq, Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, Kosovo and
Northern Ireland. He has had substantial
experience working with foreign militaries in
explosive ordnance disposal work ranging from
Improvised Explosive Device Disposal (IEDD)
to Mine Clearance and stockpile destruction.
Lee is married to a Thai national and has two
children that live in Bangkok.
Jan is a retired officer from the Norwegian
Army. Having worked with Norwegian Peoples
Aid (NPA) for 10 years he has vast experience
in operations and mine action management in
Angola, Mozambique, Lebanon, Iraq, Vietnam
and currently Cambodia to name a few.
You can read more about their efforts at:
http://www.npaid.org/en/mine_action/where_w
e_work/_hidden/mines_in_thailand/ and

We will have the usual announcements of
upcoming events in and around Pattaya,
updates on club activities, and last, but not the
least, there will be an Open Forum, which is the
time for you to ask questions about living in
Thailand, or Pattaya. We ask you to offer your
own observations and suggestions on how to
live better in Pattaya. Your humorous stories
(jokes) are welcome, but remember you are in
mixed company. Whether you are a new Expat,
just visiting on holiday, or consider yourself an
"old hand" at being an Expat in Thailand, you
will find the Open Forum has humor and
helpful information to offer.

unlimited supply of wines and food, is considered to be one of the best wine and food offers in
Pattaya. The very reasonable regular price has not changed for the Christmas season – as usual it is

EXPECT HEAVY TRAFFIC ON BEACH ROAD – FRIDAY & SATURDAY, DECEMBER

HOW TO DONATE TO HELP THOSE IN NEED BECAUSE OF THE THAILAND
FLOODING – There are many groups soliciting funds or other items to provide assistance for
those that have been impacted by the vast amount of flooding in the North and in Bangkok. For
anyone who would like to make a contribution to help Thailand’s flood victims, we have listed
some organizations on the website – click here. Additional comments and ideas are welcome -
email [email protected] with your comments and ideas. . Pat also says her
Thai friends now only rely on the flood news provided by Dr Seree Supharatid of Rangsit
University Center on Climate Change & Disasters. If you would like to see a daily update and his
analysis you can go to this website – the video clips are in English:

CHONBURI (PATTAYA) THAI IMMIGRATION NEWS –We have updated our documents
checklist for an extension or renewal of extension to stay in Thailand for retirement:
http://www.pattayacityexpatsclub.com/expats/docs/retirementvisachecklist.pdf. Also, we have
updated our web page at: http://www.pattayacityexpatsclub.com/expats/docs/Immigration.pdf for
Immigration matters of interest. Any recent changes are also publicized in the Newsletter for about
3 weeks.
Recent Change: We previously reported that Immigration was requiring two original
applications and two photographs for extensions of stay. We have now received several reports
that they have gone back to requiring only one of each. Also, they have now implemented a new

procedure where they enter data into the computer as part of the application process; thus allowing
you to receive your passport with completed extension stamp at the end of the application
processing – no longer having to return to pick it up.
Immigration Advice – Barry Kenyon, assistant information officer at Chonburi Immigration,
usually visits the Club on the first Sunday of the month to answer Thai Immigration questions. He

bring along your passport (Note: the first Sunday in January falls on January 1, New Years Day –
so it is possible he may not be available in January). The Club can also provide information on

Club Announcements
The following announcements are of particular interest to Club members regarding Club activities and
benefits
PATTAYA ORPHANAGE CHILDREN’S CHOIR WILL ENTERTAIN US ON SUNDAY,
DECEMBER 18 – Each year during the Christmas holiday period, Khun Toy with Pattaya
Orphanage brings the children to a Sunday meeting to sing Christmas carols. Also, after their
singing, in the Christmas spirit, we give each of the children a sack filled with goodies and things
they can use. This is possible through the donations made by our members and guests. Last year,
we had Santa here to hand out these presents to the delight of the children. Also, donations were
sufficient to not only provide the presents, but to provide the Orphanage with money so that they
can get similar items for the other children. We want to offer those interested a chance to donate
again this year. This coming Sunday, December 11 and again on the day they are here to entertain
us, we will have a donation box available for that purpose.
PATTAYA BLUE WATER SAILING GROUP PLANNING A 5 DAY SAILING TRIP –
Nathan Russo is back in Pattaya and is setting up a 5 day 4 night sailing trip for December 12
through the 16 for 6 to 8 people. Last Sunday, Nathan announced that they still had room. It will
be aboard the 52 foot sailing catamaran Manona. The trip will begin in Pattaya on Monday and
sail to Koh Samet (arrive Wednesday) . Spend Wednesday and Thursday around Koh Samet
returning Friday evening to Pattaya. The price is 2,900 Baht/day per person. For further
information contact Nathan Russo 085-275-6724 or email [email protected].
CLUB DINNER WILL BE ON WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 14, AT THE MANTRA – We
gather about 7pm for good food and conversation. The Mantra has more than 300 entries on its
extensive menu from Chinese, Indian, Japanese, and of course Western cuisines. It has also an
extensive range in prices starting from pizzas at 300 Baht to Maine lobsters at over 3,000 Baht. It
is undoubtedly a restaurant in the luxury category; but members of the PCEC benefit from a 15%
discount. The Mantra is just North of the Club’s meeting place – the map for our meeting location
on the Club’s website shows the location of the Mantra.
MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL TIME -- A significant number of our members will have their
membership expiring on December 31, 2011. Consequently, if your membership expires on that
date, you are encouraged to renew in November and early December to avoid overloading Judith,
our Treasurer, with membership renewals all at one time. You can choose to renew for one or
more years at 400 Baht for each year. Remember, it is your membership contribution that allows
your Club to continue to function. Also, Judith will not be available at the Sunday, December 25
meeting to handle renewals or take applications.
DISTRICT CROSS CULTURAL VOLUNTEER GROUP – The Cross Culture group is now
teaching at Pattaya City School #11, located just off Sukhumvit Road across from the Bangkok

until December 15. The students are 14 to 17 years of age, have had good training in English at the
school, and are selected from Pattaya City’s school system based on performance. The classes
provide an opportunity for the students to hear and speak with native English speakers to help
further their English proficiency. If you are interested in joining us at the school, please contact
Richard Smith at 089-244-9523, 038-412107, or by email at [email protected] for more

WE ARE ALWAYS ON THE LOOK OUT FOR INTERESTING SPEAKERS – The Club’s

PATTAYA CITY EXPATS CLUB NEWSLETTER December 9, 2011
Last Week’s Meeting
Human consciousness primarily can be traced to
the early Greek Philosophers. This, in essence,
was the topic presented at the Sunday, December
4, meeting of the Pattaya City Expats Club.
Master of Ceremonies Richard Silverberg
introduced Michael Flinn, a life-long scholar in
the history and development of human
consciousness, religion, art, civilization and
human behavior. He holds a Bachelor of Science
degree in Social Sciences, and a Masters degree
in Art History from the University of Oregon. He
has also studied at the Naropa Institute and with
various alternative teachers.
Michael was an Instructor of Art History at East
Carolina and Old Dominion Universities during
the tumultuous 60s and 70s. Michael has also
traveled extensively around the world for years
photographing the art, architecture and cultural
traditions of various countries. His photographs
are in the collections of major universities and
have been featured on the Discovery Channel.
He has lectured and given slide presentations
throughout the United States. He now resides in
the Philippines
Michael started his presentation by explaining
how he got into art and philosophy after he
discovered his original plan to study business
was “not his bag.” After he graduated in 1964,
he traveled to Europe where he found solace in
the abundance of great architecture and art; not
at all like the modern architecture which he
views as a nightmare. He found Europe more
relaxed. Over a period of years, he also traveled
to Turkey, the Mideast, India, Pakistan, and
other locales. He said observing people in abject
poverty makes one wonder how these condition
exist and led to his further studies of human
consciousness.
He then described how the Greek philosophers
were generally the first to explore the
consciousness of self. He noted that the
Christian Bible was written in Greek and that the
Greek word “Metanoia” was translated to the
English word “repent.” But, he said the word
actually means change of consciousness. It was
the pre-Socratic and later the Platonic
philosophers that delved into this change or
evolution of consciousness. Later, after World
War II, you had the existentialists that didn’t deal
with the concept of God, but rather the
understanding of one’s self; a consciousness of
being. A person creates themselves. In essence,
he felt that no matter how much you study, you
will not really gain an understanding of the
imponderable.
After Michael entertained comments and
answered questions, Richard Silverberg called on
Roy Albiston to update everyone on upcoming
events and to conduct the always interesting and
lively Open Forum where questioned are asked
and answered about expat living in Thailand;
Pattaya in particular.

Member Supported Charities
The club encourages its members to be active in supporting charitable organizations. This section assists
their efforts by providing information on some of these charitable activities.
SAVE THAT DRINK CAN RING PULL FOR A WORTHY CAUSE - Les Edmonds has
requested that you save those aluminum can ring pulls rather than discarding them when you open the
can. Gather up a few and bring them to Les. It seems they can be recycled for making artificial limbs.
Les will see that they get to the right place.
EYE GLASSES FOR THE NEEDY - Member Dave Anderson has been collecting eyeglasses and
frames for re-cycling and distributing to needy people in Thailand and Pattaya. He recently brought
2000 frames and lenses for distribution in Thailand through the Pattaya YWCA, City Hall, and his
connection with a country wide program. There is always a need - if you have any old glasses or
frames around, please bring them to the meeting, give them to Richard Smith. On Dave's latest visit,
we gave him the eyeglasses received (about 50 to 60), which he said would be donated to the Eyeglass
Bank Project.
