Dear audience, dear friends and supporters ofCantata Singers,

It is with great pleasure that we welcome youto our Christmas concert this December. Themusic and stories you will hear create a realseasonal smorgasbord! From traditionalcarols to well-loved classics to inspiringstories - you will get a little taste ofeverything. In the first half of our concert, we wish tocreate a more reflective and inwardatmosphere. Choral works by Lauridsen, Pärtand Bach provide a beautifully sombre framefor the centre story The little match girl.Although initially perceived as a sorrowfultale, a powerful element of light manifestsitself throughout. Chorales from Bach’sChristmas Oratorio will contribute to thisvision of hope. The mood changes in the second part of ourconcert! After a cheerful opener we inviteyou, dear audience, to sing-along with thechoir in some well-known carols! The storiesare humorous and a bit tongue-in-cheek andwill leave you with a gleefully spiritualfeeling at the end of our concert! We wish you all best and good health for theSeason, and thank you for your joyfulvoices!

La musique et les contesque vous allez entendre forment un vraibuffet de Noël: des chants traditionnels, desoeuvres classiques, des contes inspirants –vous pourrez goûter à tout.Dans la première moitié de notre concert,nous voulons créer un climat plus recueilli etintime. Des oeuvres chorales de Lauridsen,Pärt et Bach forment un cadre sombre pournotre conte central, “La petite fille auxallumettes”. Une histoire triste en apparence,elle révèle une puissante lumière. Adrian Harewood is the co-host of CBCNews Ottawa at 5, 5:30 & 6 and host ofCBC News Ottawa Late Night at 10:55 onCBC Television. Adrian made the leap from radio totelevision in the fall of 2009. Before hebecame the new face of CBC News Ottawa,Adrian spent three years as the host ofOttawa’s number one drive-home show, Allin a Day on CBC Radio One (91.5 FM). Asthe host of All in a Day, Adrian interviewedhundreds of Ottawa's interesting characters- getting to better know the city where hewas raised. Adrian grew up in the Ottawa’s west endand attended elementary and high school atOttawa’s Ashbury College. He then movedto Montreal to study Political Theory andHistory at McGill University, where he wasalso station manager of the campus radiostation CKUT.Adrian has hosted many CBC Radio andTelevision programs including As itHappens, Sounds Like Canada, The Currentand counterSpin, as well as Toronto showsMetro Morning, Ontario Morning, and Hereand Now. He was also the host of TheActors, The Directors and Literati as seenon BRAVO and PBS. Adrian has a keen interest in communityinvolvement. Michael Zaugg

Michael Zaugg has distinguished himself asan innovative and versatile conductor onthe Canadian choral scene. He is thefounder and Artistic Director of theMontreal Choral Institute, an umbrellaorganization for the advancement of choraleducation.

As Artistic Director of the St LawrenceChoir of Montreal, he leads an innovativeand well-respected concert series with theensemble. Since 2007, he has worked asInterim Chorus Master with the MontrealSymphony Orchestra, for which the St.Lawrence Choir is the core amateur chorus.

With the Cantata Singers of Ottawa,Michael Zaugg has been performing asArtistic Director since 2005. In addition toconducting the choir's regular concertseries, he also prepares them for theirappearances with the National Arts CentreOrchestra.

In 2006, Michael Zaugg founded VocesBoreales, a 20-voice group specializing incontemporary a cappella music. ThisMontreal ensemble has already appeared inthe NAC eXpressions Music Series and theMontreal International Bach Academy, andhas been featured on CBC Radio 2.

On the national choral scene, he has alsoworked with the Halifax Camerata, theVancouver Chamber Choir, ThirteenStrings, the Nova Scotia Youth Choir andMusica Intima.

Throughout Europe, Michael Zaugg hasconducted choirs of international standing,including the Mikaeli Chamber Choir,(Sweden), Grex Vocalis (Norway) andEnsemble Orlando, (Switzerland).

Michael Zaugg s'est distingué sur la scènechorale canadienne comme un chef de choeurinnovateur et polyvalent. Il est le fondateur et ledirecteur artistique de l'Institut choral deMontréal, un organisme voué à l'avancement del'éducation chorale.

Comme directeur artistique du ChoeurSt-Laurent de Montréal, il dirige une sérieinnovatrice et respectée de concerts avec lachorale. Il a aussi été chef intérimaire du choeurde l'Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, don’tle Choeur St-Laurent forme le noyau.

Il est directeur artistique des Cantata Singersd'Ottawa depuis 2005. En plus de diriger sa sérieannuelle de concerts, il prépare le choeur pourses prestations avec l'Orchestre du Centrenational des arts.

En 2006, Michael Zaugg fondait Voces boreales,un groupe de 20 voix spécialisé dans la musiquecontemporaine a cappella. Cet ensemblemontréalais a déjà participé à la série musicale"eXpressions" du CNA, à l'Académie Bachinternationale de Montréal et a pu être entendusur la radio de CBC 2.

Cantata Singers of Ottawa

Cantata Singers of Ottawa, founded in1964, are dedicated to excellence in theperformance of choral music fromCanada and around the world. Since theopening of the National Arts Centre(NAC) in 1969, Cantata Singers ofOttawa have performed every year withthe NAC Orchestra under the baton ofthe NACO's artistic directors, from MarioBernardi to Trevor Pinnock and PinchasZukerman, as well as internationallyrenowned guest conductors. The choiralso produces its own concert seriesevery year and makes numerous guestappearances with other organizations.CSO has recorded programmes for CBCRadio, CBC Television and RadioCanada, and it has won top honours inthe CBC Radio competition for amateurchoirs.In 1998, CSO and the NACOrchestra under Mario Bernardi recordedShattered Night, Shivering Stars, a CD ofmusic of Canadian composer AlexinaLouie.In addition to its Canadian tours,the choir has performed in theNetherlands, Hong Kong, Taiwan,Austria, Hungary and Italy.
