Leaving a career in sales to pursue my passion for something more challenging, I choose Drury University for my B.Arch degree in Architecture. While participating and leading multiple design build projects, I have continued to develop a unique set of people skills. Likewise as president of Freedom by Design, a non-profit organization, I have also been instilled with a keen set of leadership, responsibility and strategic team problem solving skills. I look forward to further challenging and expanding my career in design and leadership, in the competitive, ever changing field that is Architecture.

Technology & The builT environmenTEnriching physical interaction through the use of technology in the built environment. Victor Steinbrueck Park is located Northwest of Pike Place in Seattle WA. The proposed design was to enrich physical interaction through the use of technology with the already high volume of people visiting the site. The built program consists of a large double member touch screen, circulation up the structure, a patio, a physical gallery space and two viewing docks. Individuals are encourages in several keys areas to interact with the screens as they travel though the program. The screens engage the public in different ways at different scales throughout the plan. This interaction at multiple levels encourages and enriches face-face interaction.

Overall, the design takes up little as possible of the existing park while working to enrich the social interaction that happens in the park. The media produced on the screens is endless, thus making the functionality of the project timeless and defined by everyday interaction.

artport - springfield airportSpace where individuals could linger and enjoy the art while visiting the airport. Three other students and I got the opportunity to design and build an art kiosk for the Springfield-Branson National Airport. Some of the challenges with the project were the structure had to be built off site, before being transported and reassembled in the airport. Additionally, the design team had to follow all the local codes including fire codes, therefore could not be enclosed due to the water sprinklers.

We started with a solid and slowly defined areas by carving out negative space. These negative spaces, formally created spaces for circulation and helped define where the art would hang. This move helped to protect the art while creating opportunities for sitting and lighting.

The materials were carefully chosen based on weight and locally availability. The wood cladding is one-hundred year old barn wood, ripped into 3” strips and given a 30 degree bevel (to express the separation). The lighter wood is birch that was laminated into 4’ x 4’ sections. The project took over a year from start to finish.

The manipulation of the site creates community spaces. The architecture celebrates the social interaction, which works to inform and attract the public.

The proposed project was located in Frank A. Theis Park just south of nelson-Atkins Museum. The program would include three large performance halls; these would consist of Music, Theatre and Dance. I chose to treat each one separately. Each hall would be developed in dependently with its own supporting program.

The design solution was accomplished by carving into the earth three times with large retaining walls. This pushed the larger public elements to the west, further defining the street edge and identifying the facade to traffic. To the east, the private elements of the program would be tucked into the earth to keep views to the museum open. Together the design elements would help define public green space for each program. The public element would be fully enclosed with glass, with a solid mass within this

live/work art studioExperience the local art and then get the opportunity to display your own artistic talent.

This project was located across from Commercial Street in Springfield, Mo, which is a historic street that was at one point the downtown of Springfield. over the years it has been forgotten and has become somewhat abandoned. It was proposed that this would be a live-work studio to help promote local artists to be reestablished to the commercial St area. It was assumed that the project could help extend the already downtown art walk that happens once a month.

commercial Street was at its prime when the railroad was still used for all the exporting and importing of Springfield. The rail is still used today but not nearly as much. I was mostly intrigued by the graffiti of the rail cars themselves. Some of the tags, I would consider art. I decided that letting the community do something similar would be interesting. Looking at how one moves though the gallery space, I focused on letting the end goal be a community wall where people could show their own artistic talent.

ELEMENTARY ADDITIONForm a interesting and intriguing way for viewing the community of Rountree.

Rountree elementary is a local Springfield school that has grown from a small school to a fairly large one over the last couple centuries. The original school has been added on to three different times. We had the opportunity to redesign the school to meet the new needed space and were given the option to keep the original school structure or get rid of it completely.

After much consideration I decided to keep the original buildings due to its historic nature and strong emotional connection the community had to it. The driving force for the design was the idea of community. After talking to the teachers and students this was what stood out the most. To express this idea, all the circulation was simply pushed outward to be seen along with an added courtyard area in the middle to encourageinteraction.

The colored glass pieces were added to create an interesting and intriguing way of viewing this “community”. This also helped shade and provide a range of colors that relates to the children that attend rountree. The circulation was then organized through the use of materials and columns to define different spaces within.

CHILDREN’s CAMPWorking with the site to define and excite the way one travels through the built environment.

The project requirement was to design a camp for children, while understanding structural, enclosure and space. The camp building would allow for a space for children to practice Martial Arts and would also function as a place for sleep.

The main challenge of the project was an aggressive slope that the site was located on. The enclosures are stacked, forming with the contours of the site. The main circulation was created to run parallel with the slope. I designed the approach to become an experience.

The east wall hides most of the project and creates a simple yet intriguing entrance. once past the large wall, the area opens up and the hidden forms are exposed. The lower level has a water feature that flows into a small pool, which is fed by collected rain water. The play areas and sleeping areas take full advantage of the surrounding views. The sleeping area also has operable glass walls that allow a change of enclosure. The roof was designed to block unwanted summer sun but still allows winter sunlight.

various workSome examples of work I have done over the last couple of years, some as intern at multiple firms or some as free-lancer while studying at Drury. As an intern I was mostly exposed to quickly expressing concepts or spaces in a 3D manner for clients. Programs used include, AutoCAD, Revit, Sketch up, 3d Max and Photoshop.
