Cashel School Catchment Area

A story of Compassion

The following 2 pictures are not only pictures of past pupils of Cashel Schoolbut

pictures of a proud family with fond memories of Master James Loftus,

Headmaster of Curryane School and First Headmaster of Cashel National School.

The pictures are of the Maloney family, Gorgora, Curryane. In the early 1900’s

there was no less that 6 Maloney families in the Curryane area and the families

were often distinguished by an added name like their mothers’ maiden name.

These pictures are of John Maloney (Ward) and his family. John’s grand daughter

proudly recalls a story regularly recited by her mother Delia Maloney about her

upbringing and her time at Cashel School.

When Delia was seven years old her mother died leaving a family of seven

children, 4 boys and 3 girls, to be cared for by their father John who was forced to

immigrate to England to earn money for the family leaving the children virtually

orphaned. He would return a couple of times a year to do the farm work. Anne as

the eldest sister, at 11 years old, and third eldest in the family took on the mothers

role and looked after the family

As a pupil at Cashel National School Delia never forgot the kindness of Master

James Loftus who, known the plight of her family, used to gather up clothing

which his own children had outgrown, parcel them up and bring them to school.

He would then call her out of the class and give her the parcel of clothes to take

home to her brothers. To preserve dignity and to avoid others finding out about the

clothes Master Loftus would allow Delia to leave school early with the parcel.

Delia died in 2002 RIP and despite suffering from Alzheimer’s she always recalled

the generosity and kindness of Master James Loftus.

The family were always close and loyal to each other.
