• Dear Cathedral Students,

I’m honored that I was chosen to be your philanthropist for the common good. As you know, I dedicated most of my life fighting in the Civil Rights Movement. I always believed in standing up for what’s right, as exemplified in my “I Have a Dream” speech. As an African American, growing up in the South and being raised as a Baptist, the Civil Rights Movement had a major effect on my life. I simply could not stand back and watch as my peers were treated so unjustly.

One of my proudest moments, as a philanthropist, was receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. I don’t know if you know this but I was the youngest man, second American, and third black man to receive this honorary award. You’re right, it wasn’t always easy to fight this war of segregation but my hard work paid off. I wanted to make the world a better place and I always dreamed for a better future for all people, and not just African Americans. Although my name is most commonly associated with the Civil Rights Movement, I couldn’t have done it without the help of other passionate people.

Common Good exists when people come together to form an organization, partnership, or country

The purpose of organizations is to form a common defense or protection of society– Organizations strengthen democracy by uniting different

groups of people– Organizations strive to make life better for society as a

whole Without common good, there would be no other

reason to form an association Ex: Habitat for Humanity is an existing organization in

the democracy of America that has been created to help the homeless in our country for the common good
