À la lumière des bougies couvrir les tombes de f leurs. Il faut perdre la tête auCarnaval. À Pâques, retrouver les amis sur les plages et y passer la nuit dans un hamac. Eten août, bénir la mer.Se lever tôt, au chant des tour terelles, du coq du voisin, de la vague qui se brise, du petit grainmatinal. L’air est rose, délicieusement frais, et le chat gourmand se frotte contre vos jambes.Les oiseaux sucriers chipent la cassonade du café et les tor tues dérobent quelques fruits entamés.Ici on conduit d’une main. De l’autre, on salue. On connait tout le monde, et tout le monde vousconnaît. Les routes sont sinueuses, étroites, ça monte, ça descend, on croise des spor tifs à la petite foulée, des parents qui emmènent leurs enfants à l’école, des ouvriers qui démarrentleurs chantiers… Le soleil monte. Il chauffe le toit des cases et des maisons, et le monde qui s’affaire.Le soir, les enfants sor tent de l’école à côté de la plage, et les car tables s’éparpillent sur lesable blanc. Attention ! La vague va empor ter ton goûter ! La nuit arrive vite, précédée parla chorale assourdissante des minuscules grenouilles. On dîne tôt, souvent de dorade, de thon,de wahoo, de patates douces ou de plantains. Quand la lune éclaire comme en plein jour, on peineà trouver le sommeil. C’est l’heure où les pêcheurs à bord de leurs saintoises vont loin chercherle poisson du lendemain.

The routes are narrow and winding, climbing and dropping back down as you passjoggers, parents taking their children to school, construction workers getting their equipmentin order… The sun rises higher, warming the roofs of the cabins and houses, and the peoplewho are out and about.In late afternoon, the children leave the school by the beach, strewing their book bags on thewhite sand. “Watch out! Your lunchbox will get washed out to sea!” Night falls quickly, an-nounced by a chorus of hundreds of tiny frogs. People dine early, often on tuna, bream, wahoo,sweet potatoes or plantains. When the moon shines as bright as daylight, it’s hard to fallasleep. That’s when the fishermen head out in their saintoises, to net the next day’s catch.
