And with The Triune God’s help, we will be a church that is inspired by the wonders of The Creator, follows in the ways of The Christ, and moves with the flow of The Spirit. Rev. Pastor’s Ponderings From Rev. Calob Rundell

The Holy Spirit: Just As Important

With the start of June, my life will have a new challenge

to it: I will be a volunteer firefighter with our Chaffee

County Fire Protection District.

As part of my firefighter training that was

a big part of the first six months of this

year, I learned about the “fire triangle,” a

model that easily explains the three

necessary things for a fire to maintain

combustion. A fire needs a source of

oxygen, a source of fuel to burn, and a

source of heat to either start the

combustion or keep it going.

If one of the three parts of the “fire triangle” is removed,

the fire is extinguished. If it uses all the oxygen in an

enclosed space, the fire is done. If all the fuel is

consumed, the fire is done. And if the fire is cooled down

to a temperature where combustion stops, the fire is

done.

All three things are just as important, and just as literally

vital, to the life of the fire.

In the Christian tradition, we worship a God that we

experience in three distinct ways. The Holy Trinity that

is God is experienced as God the Creator (or Father),

God the Redeemer (Jesus the Son), and God the

Sustainer (The Holy Spirit). All of these three

movements and missions of God are equal, co-existent,

eternal, and individually distinct. (And it’s all a mystery,

so don’t worry if you don’t get it. Nobody gets it.)

Just like with a fire, all three movements of the Triune

God are necessary. If one is missing, then it’s not God. In

our Protestant tradition, we talk a lot about God the

Creator and Jesus the Christ. But we often don’t give a

lot of air time to The Holy Spirit, even though The Holy

Spirit is just as important to the work of

God and is just as important to our

experience of God.

The Holy Spirit is that experience of

God that moves the church. Jesus told

his followers that The Holy Spirit would

come to them and move through them,

and with that power the earliest disciples

spread the message of Jesus and did the

work of Jesus.

If we are going to marvel at the works of God the

Creator, and if we are going to be transformed by the

death and resurrection of God the Redeemer, we also

have to be moved to action by God the Sustainer. We

have to be open and attune to how The Spirit is on the

move, and we are to ask The Spirit to move through us.

And with The Triune God’s help, we will be a church

that is inspired by the wonders of The Creator, follows in

the ways of The Christ, and moves with the flow of The

Spirit.

know more about this church,

come and join me and Larry

Committee. Volunteering in this way,

you can learn how to use the equipment,

become familiar with the office in the basement, work

with me to scan material and eventually become the

historian for the church.

You will work at your own pace and in the hours you find

convenient. There is still much to scan and record to the

computer. So, give it a thought and let me know.

We’re preparing for a NEW…

We are working with Lifetouch Photography to create an updated Photo Church Directory. There is NO cost to the church to participate and each person who has a portrait

made will receive a FREE 8 x 10 professional portrait and a complimentary photo directory. While there is no obligation to buy, you may be interested in considering their photo packages for holiday gifts for your family. Also, you may include your pet or pets in your photo sitting!

PLEASE NOTE: If you have any other family members, friends, or neighbors who would like to have a FREE professional photo made, but don’t need to be included in our directory, they may also schedule an appointment. They will receive a complimentary 8 X 10 photo, but not the complimentary directory. The more photos that are taken, the greater the benefit to our church in the increased numbers of complimentary photo directories we receive!

SIGN UP NOW: Portrait dates for the NEW Photo Church Directory are Monday, June 6th from 1:00pm to 8:00pm and Tuesday, June 7th from 12:00pm to 7:00pm. Sign-up sheets are on the back table in Century Hall. Plan to be available for up to 1 hour.

If you are not able to attend on either of these dates, please see Licia for alternate opportunities to have your photo included in our directory. If you have any

questions, please see Licia in the office.

Celebrations

Pat & Norris Miller News – On June 5th, we will be having a Hawaiian Luau Farewell Celebration for Pat & Norris Miller as they will be moving on June 15th, to live

in Canon City. While we will miss them terribly we join in the prayerful hope that this move to 2000 feet lower in elevation will be a life-giving support to Pat’s respiratory health. They have promised that they will come to visit often and it is good to know that they are “just down the road!” Please keep Pat and Norris in your prayers, as they navigate this next chapter in in their beautiful lives!

Anabel Lamberg – Please continue to hold Anabel in your prayers as she gets stronger and stronger every day following her hip replacement surgery. We are so happy that Anabel has now returned to her home from Columbine. The best news of all is that she has NO pain. This is indeed good news. We miss you Anabel!

Julie Moss – We recently celebrated with Julie when she shared with us that she was able to walk to church on a beautiful Sunday morning, following her recovery from a hip replacement. It is SO good to have her back with us. Julie is one of those people who remind us that we are all like little children, especially when she joins the children up on the front pew for Pastor Calob’s Message for Young People on Sunday morning. Thank you Julie!

Rod Schleicher – Rod recently had shoulder surgery and was out for only two weeks. Thank you to Judy Bullen who substituted beautifully. Rod is back with us now and we ask that you please keep him in your prayers for a full recovery.

Marilyn McQueen – Please keep Marilyn in your prayers as she recently fell and broke her hip. She had her surgery on May 25th at the Littleton Hospital. We will let you know when we know more.

Isaac Foreman – We recently received a note from Isaac’s dad, Phil, to let their “Salida Church Family know that Isaac will be graduating from High School and attending Texas Christian University in the Fall of 2016. He was awarded the prestigious Nordan Scholarship which is performance based and includes full tuition. Isaac will be studying piano and organ performance. He will also continue to serve as the organist at FUMC Hurst, Texas.” Isaac recently performed a concert at TCU. They are looking forward to seeing all of us this summer! You may see the note and concert invitation (with a nice photo of Isaac) on our bulletin board in Century Hall.

Licia Iverson – Licia has only been painting for a couple of years. Recently, she entered a pastel painting in a local art show, Valley Visions, and was awarded the 2nd Place People’s Choice award. You can stop by Century Hall to see her painting, “Peaceful Meander” and share in her joy.

Please send your prayer requests, updates, celebrations, and announcements to

Licia in the office at: [email protected]

For many of us in the congregation, cutting out box

tops or saving Campbell soup labels is something we

have done for years. In recent years, our

congregation has been sending our coupons to the

McCurdy School in New Mexico. Now, we are giving

our cache of coupons to our local schools.

If this is something new to the reader, various

companies offer a coupon on their box or in the

case of Campbell Soup, on their label. They are

worth a dime and some companies will give you a

bonus of more if you buy a certain product.

The schools use these coupons and labels to

provide funds for extra projects, and it has been

helpful to Longfellow Elementary, Salida Middle

School, Crest Academy, and the Montessori School.

We encourage you to begin purchasing those

products of your choice and save the coupons, bring

to the school or if you would prefer to church. We

have a basket to collect the coupons in the hallway

between Century Hall and the Sanctuary, along with

other information that may be of interest to you.

It doesn't take much time and you will be surprised

when you start looking for the coupons what you

might have not seen before.

Go to this site to find specific products in a variety

of categories.

Are You Ready? Yes We’re Ready!

Thank you to everyone who attended our planning meeting on Sunday, May 22nd. We are excited to have so many new and returning volunteers. The first four weeks of dinners are

fully planned and dinner volunteer sign-up sheets are available on the table in Century Hall. The posters for the dinners have been delivered to the local rafting companies, thanks to Linda & Stephen Taylor. Everyone is getting excited!

We build it…They will come!

On Thursday, May 19th, Licia Iverson and Linda Taylor presented at Salida Soup, a local community based, micro-granting opportunity, and were graciously awarded the most votes to take home the “Soup Pot” of donations for the Raft Guide Dinners. The donations collected that evening plus the generous sponsoring funds of $250 from High Country Bank, added a total of $735 to our Raft Guide Fund! Thank you to Salida Soup, High Country Bank and all those who were in attendance.

We are looking forward to a great summer with our Raft Guides and all the volunteers. Please plan to attend a dinner or two, or more, during the summer. Not only are these evenings meaningful to the guides but also to the volunteers. We are given the opportunity to be the Hands & Feet of God…

And it is GOOD!
