RESPECT LIFE MONTH & END OF LIFE ISSUES: ADVANCE CARE PLANNING
As you may know, there has been a great deal of discussion over the last few decades about advance care planning (this
taking various forms such as advance health care directives, living wills, designating a health care proxy, Physician Order
for Life-Sustaining Treatment or POLSTs and Medical Order for Life-Sustaining Treatment or MOSTs etc.). It is also part
of current discussions concerning possible changes to Medicare. The USCCB has recently provided some comments that
might help us in looking at such directives, as well assisting us in being clear in our own minds as to what our faith has to
say about this important issue. So, here is a summary of the comments…
First, the Church has no objection to encouraging people to consider treatment decisions they may have to make in the future
in the light of their personal values and medical condition. In fact, there are many Church-based resources available to help
us with such decisions (for example see: “Now and at the Hour of our Death: Catholic Guidance for End-of-Life Decision
Making”, www. catholicendoflife.org/resources/). Two key principles here are that each human life at every stage and in
every condition has a God-given dignity, but also that the moral obligation to preserve one’s life has certain limits
particularly when the means offered for supporting life may be useless or may impose burdens that are disproportionate to
their benefits (see: usccb.org/issues-and-action/human-life-and-dignity/end-of-life/euthanasia/index.cfm#church). It
might also be added that encouragement from government or other agencies for a person to make future health care
provisions should be to enhance patient autonomy and care and not be motivated by a desire to save on health care costs.
There are three main types of advance care directives. First, a person discusses his or her values with loved ones so that they
will be ready to discuss the best course of action in the light of current medical information when a decision becomes
necessary. Secondly, the person may formally designate a trusted person to serve as a surrogate decision maker (such as a
health care proxy). Thirdly, a person may sign an advance care directive or plan such as a “living will”, attempting to make
choices in advance regarding particular treatments in particular future scenarios.
Each type of directive has its strengths and weaknesses, but the third type seems to be particularly encouraged at present
(with its variants such as “MOSTs” and “POLSTs”). However, this type has some particular weaknesses and concerns. In
short, it is “at best, a blunt instrument for making medical decisions.” Why? Well, it cannot take into account the myriad
details of a patient’s future condition or will, or the probable risks or benefits of various (future) treatments. Also, it is very
hard to predict, in advance, how a person may assess life in a future condition that they may have before they have actually
experienced it.
Furthermore, some standard forms or protocols can be provided by various agencies (for example with MOSTs and
POLSTs), but these need to be examined and assessed with great care before being signed. For example, some of these
standard texts or forms propose a withdrawal of treatment not only in response to a terminal illness, but also to an
irreversible disabling condition, with a possible implication that life with a serious disability is no life at all. Other texts
imply that assisted feeding and hydration are somehow optional medical treatments on the same level as aggressive surgical
or medical procedures, despite considerable moral and medical objections that such means are best understood not so much
as forms of medical care but rather as forms of normal care generally owed to all patients. So, for example, the use of a
feeding tube is not of the same order or nature as putting a person on a ventilator.
So, the USCCB panel advises that “advance care planning should acknowledge the full range of advance care planning
options, including those which rely on discussion and collaboration among family members, instead of on prepackaged
documents that may be biased towards withdrawal of treatment.” Any directive/planning document also should be read with
the utmost care to ensure that it fully protects a person’s well-being and religious values. We can also inform ourselves
about what is best and what our faith has to say by consulting the resources mentioned above as well as resources such as
“The Bias Against Life-Preserving Treatment in Advance Care Planning”, a document from the National Right to Life
Committee that can be found at www.nrlc.org/uploads/communications/advanceplanningbias2015.pdf.

Special Safe Environment Training Course
Next Two Sundays
On 10/25 from 10am to 12pm,
we are offering the VIRTUS training course. We’re offering these sessions especially for our

the course is welcome.
If you have questions please let us

Hello friends!
Hopefully you’ve had a chance to check out some of the many ways we try to enrich the faith of our community outside of Sunday Mass.
We have many special “audiences” that we work with within our various ministries that cater to people of certain ages or life situations.
We also hope to do many things for the whole community, especially those who want to grow in understanding their faith at an adult level.
For people who want a good introduction to the Bible, check out our 4-session program continuing
on October 28th (see above). We’re also planning to both an Advent speaker series and an Advent weekly retreat (more info to come!).
Also, we post video of our sessions on our parish website (www.stambroselatham.com/media).
There are so many ways to grow: both from here and at home. We hope you take advantage of them!
In Christ,

30TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
ALL SOULS AND
THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER
During the month of November, we traditionally
pray for our family and friends who have died.
We have some special “All Souls” memorial
envelopes available. There will be two Masses
offered (6:30am & 7:00pm) for all those
named on 2nd November (All Soul’s Day) and
each day during the month of November. Please
use the space on the back of the envelope to write
down the names of those you wish to be
remembered and then place the envelopes with
any offering you wish to make in the collection
basket as it comes around at the weekend Masses,
or leave the envelopes at the Parish Office or in
the Sacristy. Please make sure that the envelopes
are returned as soon as possible so that the names
can be included in the Mass intentions. The
envelopes will be placed at the altar during the
month of November and those named on the back
of the envelope are prayed for during Mass.
There will also be a Book of Remembrance for
you to write down the names of loved ones who
have died.
On Sunday, 1st November during the 11.30 am
Mass, we will have a special remembrance
ceremony for all our recently deceased parish
members who have had a Funeral Mass or liturgy
at St. Ambrose during the last year (the annual
“Healing of Memories Mass”). The ceremony
will involve some special prayers, the reading of
the names of the deceased parish members and
the presentation of flower. After the Mass there
will be a reception in the McCormick Parish
Center. The families concerned should have
received an invitation to this event, but if you
have not please do contact the Parish Office as
soon as possible. Also, if you have had a family
member (from St. Ambrose or any place) who has
passed away in the last year but whose funeral
took place elsewhere, you are warmly invited to
participate in the ceremony too. Again, please
contact the Parish Office giving your name, the
name of the deceased family member(s) and how
many family and friends you estimate might be
coming.
THE DAY CHAPEL: A WONDERFUL ASSET FOR US!
At this busy time of the year, it is good to remember that our
Day Chapel (to the right side of the church) is open for prayer
during the day. Some people have asked about the “official”
opening times for the Day Chapel and for the Church, so here
they are…
The Day Chapel is usually open from 5.45 am Mondays to
Fridays (except if there is something like a public holiday).
The Day Chapel usually closes on weekdays at around 9.00
pm (except on Fridays when we have Eucharistic Adoration
and the chapel is open until midnight).
On Saturdays, the Day Chapel is open from around 8.00 am until shortly after the end of the Saturday evening Mass
(the main church is usually opened at 2.45 pm or so, ready for
the celebration of the sacrament of reconciliation and then for
the 4.30 pm Mass).
On Sundays, the Main Church and Day Chapel are open from
around 6.45 am (or a little before) until after the 5.30 pm
Mass.
The Day Chapel is a wonderful facility to have, especially as
we have the Blessed Sacrament reserved there too; so please
do make use of it if you wish. Call in, even for just a few
moments of prayer, peace, focus and reflection on the way to
or coming back from school, work, shopping, running errands
or whenever you are just passing by the church. Those few
moments will certainly not be wasted…!

That Religious may be still in your life today. Come join us for a hour
of prayer on Monday, November 2nd at 7:00pm to remember that Sister, living or deceased, and all those who have gone before us on the Feast of All Souls during the Year of Consecrated Life. Please join us for an hour of Eucharistic Adoration starting at 7:00pm at St. Joseph’s Provincial House,

The Family Life Ministry is designating
NOVEMBER as the MONTH of SERVICE What is the key aspect when you think of a family? Love…and...Service. Service to one another, helping each other, sacrificing
our love, our conveniences, and our comforts so that someone else may be more comfortable, so that they are happy and live a
better life. This can be in our immediate families, but also our “Parish Family”. It all comes down
to service. We should treat everyone as family. We should serve them as if they were our own
family.
For next month our ministry is asking for two questions—
First—Do you know someone in our Parish Family that needs assistance in fall cleanup—either
inside or outside? Do you know someone who needs assistance in a small project, like cleaning out
the garage, or painting a room, etc.? PLEASE contact Justina our Faith Formation Secretary at 785-1351 (307) or
[email protected] with the info.
Second—Would your family like to give back to our Parish Family by sharing your time/talents/comforts. Also PLEASE
contact our Faith Formation Secretary Justina at 785-1351 x307 or [email protected] with the info.
Thank you and God Bless
