Dear Parishioners:

We reflected last Sunday how a great sinner in the like of Zacchaeus came to realize his sinfulness so much so that he sought Jesus even to the point of climbing a sycamore tree. This brought about a relationship between him and Jesus. living Rosary... from page 1 St. Martin de porresFeast day: 3 november

St. Martin was born in 1579, the illegitimate son of a freed woman of Panama, probably black but also possibly of Native American stock, and a Spanish grandee of Lima, Peru.

At 12 his mother apprenticed him to a barber-surgeon. After a few years in this medical apostolate, Martin applied to theDominicans to be a “lay helper,” not feeling himself worthy to be a religious brother. After nine years, the example of his prayer and penance, charity and humility led the community to request him to make full religious profession. Many of his nights were spent in prayer and penitential practices; his days were filled with nursing the sick and caring for the poor. It was particularly impressive that he treated all people regardless of their color, race or status. He was instrumental in founding an orphanage, took care of slaves brought from Africa and managed the daily alms of the priory with generosity. He became the procurator for both priory and city, whether it was a matter of “blankets, shirts, candles, candy, miracles or prayers.

Martin’s life reflected God’s extraordinary gifts: ecstasies that lifted him into the air, light filling the room where he prayed, bilocation, miraculous knowledge, instantaneous cures and a remarkable rapport with animals. His charity extended to beasts of the field and even to the vermin of the kitchen. He would excuse the raids of mice and rats on the grounds that they were underfed. He became a formidable fundraiser, obtaining thousands of dollars for dowries for poor girls so that they could marry or enter a convent.

Many of his fellow religious took him as their spiritual director, but he continued to call himself a “poor slave.” He was a good friend of another Dominican saint of Peru, Rose of Lima. In 1639, “Martin of Charity,” died in the peace of the Lord, Jesus Christ. He was canonized on August 6, 1962 by John XXIII.

household. This is called “Mysterium Tremendum et Fascinans,” bringing about to a total and complete transformation and renewal to Zacchaeus.

Now we go to the questions of the Sadducees in today’s gospel. The Sadducees, were the political-religious rival of the Pharisees during the time of Christ. They believed that they were the spiritual descendants of Zadok, Solomon’s high-priest. They belonged to the aristocratic and priestly classes and claimed to have exclusive right to preside over temple liturgies, sacrifices etc. Being religiously conservative, they accepted only the Pentateuch as normative and denied the development of doctrines found in later Jewish scriptures such as angels, resurrection, final judgment, afterlife etc.

When the Sadducees approached Jesus with the problem as stated in today’s gospel, they wanted to prove Jesus to be wrong by using a highly improbable example based on the levirate law namely

Genesis 38:8. Then Judah said to Onan, “Unite with your brother’s widow, in fulfilment of your duty as brother-in-law, and thus preserve your brother’s line.”

Deuteronomy 25:5. Levirate Marriage “When brothers live together and one of them dies without a son, the widow of the deceased shall not marry anyone outside the family; but her husband’s brother shall go to her and perform the duty of a brother-in-law by marrying her.

This levirate law provided the marriage of a widow by the next brother of her deceased husband to assure the continuance of the family line.

Therefore to the question of the Sadducees “Now at the resurrection whose wife will that woman be? ” (Lk. 20; 33), Jesus explained to the Sadducees that, when Yahweh appeared at the burning bush to Moses in the Book of Exodus He identified himself as the God of the patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Everyone knew

that these persons had been dead for a long time. So if God is truly a God of the living, they must somehow be alive since they were identified with Him. This was the argument of Jesus.

All of these statements boil down to one point. When our loving God has a relationship with someone as Jesus did with Zacchaeus in the last Sunday’s gospel, then that relationship WILL NEVER BE DISSOLVED, NOT EVEN BY DEATH. In other words it will continue in eternity. It means that the person whom God relates here on earth continue to be alive in eternity and therefore enjoying its fruits which is of his own resurrection. This is the same as what St. Paul wrote in his letter to the Romans “I am certain that neither death, nor life…nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God that comes to us in Christ Jesus, our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39)

Once there was a young man suffering terribly in the purgatory. Day and night, he cried aloud to God pleading to be delivered from the torments of purgatory. God heard the cries of this man. He asked what good work he had done while still earth her on. An angel went through his bio -data in the huge heavenly computer, and reported that the man shared some vegetables like onion leaves to his poor neighbors.

“Alright,” God ordered, “make a cord out of the onion leaves and lower it to him.” So the angel did as commanded.

As the angel gingerly dangled the cord, the young man, desperately grabbed it. Then the angel started to lift him out of the burning furnace bringing him to heaven.

Such is the goodness and benevolence of our God. A little act, creating an initial relationship with Him is rewarded infinitely in eternity in our own Resurrection.
