Ignite: Mondays at STM As we moved through our transitions in Staff the last few months, one position that remains open is our Youth Advocate. We presently are advertising for a part-time Youth Advocate/Minister and hope to fill that position in the near future. In the meantime, it is important for everyone, especially those in High School, to know that Ignite Mondays are still happening and meaningful activities are taking place. Here is a snapshot for the month of October and the Team that is making things move forward: Every Ignite Monday provides time for some fun, some food, some prayer, and opportunities to grow in one’s faith with thought, reflection, and discussion on issues of importance for today. Creation Care Ministry News In Laudato Sí’, Pope Francis tells us: Mary, the Mother who cared for Jesus now cares with maternal affection for this wounded world. Just as her pierced heart mourned the death of Jesus, so now she grieves for the sufferings of the crucified poor and for the creatures of this world laid waste by human power. Completely transfigured, she now lives with Jesus, and all creatures sing of her fairness. She is the Woman, “clothed in the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars” (Rev 12:1). Carried up into heaven, she is the Mother and Queen of all creation (paragraph 241). One thing we can all each do to care for Creation and care for the Poor is pray the Rosary. Our Lady is listening. Please consider joining the Creation Care team now, or in the New Year beginning January 4. We continue to meet this year on Saturday, October 26, November 9 and 23, at 3:00pm, in the Lower Level lobby, and we welcome new members. We will be at our table October 26-27, and November 23-24 and happy to discuss Laudato Si’ as well as our work and your role in it!

St. Bonaventure Clothing Drive November 2-3 Our annual clothing drive to help the Navajo served by St. Bonaventure Indian Mission.will be before all masses the weekend of November 2-3. For 25 years you have been gracious enough to provide lightly used clothing for some of the most needy in our country, the Navajo. Clothing for all ages and all seasons is seriously needed. They Are Remembered… Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed You are invited to attend our annual Mass to remember and celebrate the lives of our loved ones, especially those who have passed through death to new life during this past year. The Mass will be celebrated Saturday, November 2, at 9:30am in our Church. A reception will follow in the Parish Center Upper Level. All are welcome! Additional Catholic Traditions Related to All Souls Day— Envelopes are available in advance of November 2 for you to

list the names of deceased loved ones. These envelopes will be placed on the altar on November 2 and remain there until the Feast of Christ the King at the end of November as a reminder that we are all praying for the souls of the faithful departed. (Envelopes were attached to the bulletin last weekend and will also be available at the information table after Masses and at the Parish Office during the week. Please return completed envelopes by October 31.

During the month of November, the church traditionally remembers those who have gone before us to new life. There will be a special book for you to write the names of your loved ones in the vestibule of the Church. Please join us in praying:

Holy Mary, Gentle Mother, cradle within your arms those who have died, and intercede for those who mourn them. Amen.

Be Baptized and Sent—on Mission in the World! For World Mission Sunday in October, we are called to offer our prayers and our generous financial support, through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, to continue the mission of Jesus. Envelopes were attached to the bulletin at the beginning of the month and may be returned any time during October. Your prayers and financial help support mission priests, religious Sisters and Brothers, and lay catechists who are Christ’s witnesses to a world so in need of his healing, love, and peace. Thank you!

Spirited Seniors Museum Tour The Spirited Seniors have arranged a tour of the Oceanside Museum of Art on Friday, November 8, followed by a no-host lunch at a local micro-brewery. The cost will be $5 for members, $6 for non-members. We will meet at the main STM Parking Lot at 9:45am to organize carpools. Bring your GPS, if possible. We will depart STM at 10:15am for the Oceanside Museum of Art, located at 704 Pier View Way, Oceanside, CA 92054. We will enjoy an included private 90-minute, docent-led tour of the Museum. Lunch will be on our own. We have made a group reservation at nearby Northern Pine Brewing, co-located with That Boy Good-BBQ restaurant. We will depart Oceanside at 2:30pm in our carpools, and arrive home about 3:00pm, depending on traffic. Please complete the registration form or a piece of paper with your name(s) and telephone number and whether you need a ride or can provide a ride. Women’s Guild News What a lovely welcoming of new members and grand reunion of returning members at our last week’s greatly attended Women’s Guild meeting. All were treated to a most courageous and heartfelt presentation by Cirese LaBerge followed by Rita McCarthy and her involvement in the STM Jail Ministry. Thank you, Cirese and Rita for your dedication in reaching out in Christianity, love and support to those needing encouragement and belief in themselves. We hope to see even more attendees at next month’s November 11 meeting/luncheon. As we honor Veteran’s Day, our presenter will be Captain Fr. Chris Merris, Chaplain, United States Navy Retired. We will also be patriotically enlightened by our own choir member, cantor and vocalist Commander Tom Colgan, Nurse Corps, United States Navy Retired. Do plan to attend. Our meetings begin at 11:00am and are adjourned at approximately 1:00pm. Don’t forget to visit the plaza after Mass today. In the Prayers of the Faithful, we sometimes offer thanks to God for the freedom we have to worship openly and peacefully in this country. Some will have forgotten that this “right” is part of the first of ten amendments to the US Constitution, what we know today as the Bill of Rights, ratified in 1791: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

It is notable that the free exercise of religion is, in fact, enshrined in the first clauses of this first amendment. At St. Thomas More Parish, we are so very fortunate to be able to worship our gracious God in an open setting—joyous, consoling, full of light and life—available to all who walk through our doors in search of the living God. But it is not always quite so easy.

Recently, I had the privilege of singing at a local synagogue for the High Holy Days, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the most important holiday in the Jewish faith, marking the peak of the ten Days of Awe, a period of self-examination and repentance that follows Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. In terms of importance to one’s faith, a parallel might be drawn between the Days of Awe in the annual Jewish religious calendar and the Christian Triduum. To attend the services, one has to go through security, single file through a narrow steel entry gate. Bags were checked, coats were removed, and the security persons—at least the many that I saw—were armed. It was hard for me, so used to an “open campus” at every church I have attended or ministered, to wrap my head around this experience. But the people who live this necessary level of security every week seem to put it aside and worship God with inspiring reverence and abundant joy. The choir was exceptionally welcoming to this newcomer, and abundant laughter intertwined with

For example, having a “small” group with over 14 students defeats the point of having a “small” group. The break out questions that are provided are lost without that intimate setting. It then turns into a lecture, which no one (especially teenagers) like. You have so much to offer! Your faith journey is so important to share, especially to those who are just beginning theirs. Sacrificial Giving Sacrificial Giving is the process of consciously examining one’s household income and making a decision to give a percentage of it to the Church. If the “leap of faith” of tithing seems to be too great for you, we ask that you consider the “gradual approach.” Please examine and review not only the dollar amount that you presently give to St. Thomas More, but the percentage of your gross household income that dollar amount represents. When you add up all your gifts to St. Thomas More, what percentage is that amount of your gross household income? Maybe it is ½%, 1%, 3%, or more? You are encouraged to increase it by a percentage each year until you have made that leap of Faith and are tithing. Remember that the Lord is never outdone in generosity. Pray that more and more of us are willing to be challenged by the Biblical directive to give back to the Lord a tithe of all that we have and are.
