Parish Mission Statement Our mission is to be on fire with the love of Jesus Christ,

and with the help of the Holy Spirit, to celebrate our community of faith in the Eucharist

and to share God’s love and mercy with our neighbors through our ministries and evangelization.

For Trinh, home is where her family gathers—to play, to eat, to rest. “My family is the most important thing to

me,” she says. One way she shows her family love is by doing chores around the house. She helps her family by

bathing her little sister, Trang, showing her how to wash her hands and helping her with schoolwork. Trinh likes

washing the teapot and cups and collecting eggs from the ducks. Often, Trinh will ride her bike to get medicine

for her parents when they are sick. Trinh likes to catch dragonflies and crickets with her sister. Since her house is

surrounded by rice fields, and coconut and bamboo trees, there’s plenty of places for the sisters to play. But the house is also near a

river, and when storms pass through, Trinh’s home often fills with water. “I wish I would have a house that is not wet or leaky and

would not flood anymore,” says Trinh. In Vietnam, CRS is working with students like Trinh, helping them to learn ways to protect their

home, food and family from destructive storms. Trinh is happy that she can apply what she learned in school to help her family.

Maria Ana from Honduras is no different. Her family’s home was destroyed in a recent accident, and her

family is living in a temporary space—a small wooden hut—until they can get it fixed. It’s been hard living

without a permanent place to call home. Everyone sleeps on the floor, and during the rainy season the roof

often leaks. Maria Ana is hopeful her family will have a new house soon. “I want to keep studying so I can

help my family succeed,” she says. To help make the dream a reality, Maria Ana works hard in school—and

CRS provides school lunches to ensure she can focus on her studies and not on her hunger. Maria Ana

also works in her community to earn money to support her family. At home, she helps with chores, like washing the school uniforms,

helping to prepare the family meal, and fetching and boiling water to make it drinkable.

In Kenya, chores are one way Yvone helps her family too. Each morning she washes dishes, sweeps the

house, prepares lunch for the younger children and washes their school uniforms.

Yvone’s family has a hut where the family eats and sleeps, a stable for the animals and a separate kitchen

hut. During the rainy season, the family collects water from a system on the roof. When it’s dry, they borrow

from neighbors or walk to a community water point to fetch water. Yvone’s family life has changed for the

better thanks to a CRS program that teaches families about healthy food. In our next story, you’ll learn how.

Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His St. Anthony Family. A HOLY COMMUNITY THROUGH HOLY COMMUNION! Your brother in Jesus,

St. Anthony of Padua, High Ridge, MO

Church Lenten Regulations “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.” (Jn 3:16-17) The Church has always helped us fulfill these words of Jesus by prescribing very definite penance for all Catholics. Universal Lenten directions are printed here in order that we may be re-minded of what is expected of all Catholics for all the days of Lent. 1. Abstinence from meat (totally meatless days) is observed

by all Catholics 14 years of age and older (no upper age limit) on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent.

2. Fasting is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between 18 and 59. Those who are bound by this eat only one full meal; two smaller meals are taken to maintain strength according to each one’s needs.

3. Fasting on other weekdays of Lent is not obligatory but recommended most strongly; if fasting is not observed, some other form of self-denial is obligatory, not from Church direction but from Christ’s command.

4. Prayer is especially necessary to maintain the perspective of penance and to keep the motivation spiritual. Some sub-stantial time should be given to Jesus in prayer each day.

5. Almsgiving or charity is necessary to maintain and inten-sify the movement of the soul away from self-centeredness. A substantial donation of monetary funds and /or time and/or personal effort should be given to those in need, - - especially through the Rice Bowl.

Lenten Message from Pope Francis The 2020 Message of His Holiness Pope Francis for Lent is available for your prayerful consideration and response. Please visit Vatican website at vaticannews/lent OR catholics.org/lent. During Lent, we pray with renewed fervor for ourselves, our families, and the Church; we hope this message provides inspi-ration in your spiritual preparation. Through the grace of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit, may we all be agents of the Father’s mercy.

Stations of the Cross A privileged devotion most frequently prayed in a public ser-vice during Lent is the Stations of the Cross. For centuries pilgrimage to the holy places in Jerusalem and a walking the path of Christ’s carrying the cross to Calvary has been an es-teemed devotion and penitential practice. In similar fashion the faithful have prayed at home at fourteen “stations of the Cross” erected on the walls of their parish churches. Join us for this powerful devotional prayer every Friday evening of Lent at 7:00 PM.

Operation Rice Bowl The effort known as Operation Rice Bowl has become a regular feature of Lent in Catholic homes throughout the United States. Families reduce substantially one meal eaten together to a very simple fare like soup and bread, then donate the money saved to the “rice bowl”. At the end of Lent, all the ”rice bowl” funds are collected through the parish and forwarded to the poor through Catholic Relief Services. “Rice bowls”, instructions, and Lenten Calendars are available at the entrance.

Lent and Confession All Catholics associate Lent with the Sacrament of Penance, Reconciliation, and Confession. Sometimes we put off going to Confession depriving ourselves of much richer Lent; indeed, a much richer life. Everyone is urged to make their Lenten confes-sion at our Parish Penance Service on March 25, 2020 at 7:00 PM. In that way, the richness of God’s mercy may develop in Lent to blossom into a hardy and brilliant Easter joy.

O Jesus, come and awaken us from our apathy

and renew in us your gift of hope. Bring me into your presence, that I may listen to your voice,

which is the source of all wisdom, and watch your face forever.

-St. Bede

Joke of the Week

Two nuns were shopping at a 7-11 store. As they passed by the beer cooler, one nun said to the other, “Wouldn’t a nice cool beer or two taste wonderful on a hot summer evening?” The second nun answered “Indeed it would Sister, but I would not feel comfortable buying beer, since I am certain it would cause a scene at the checkout stand.” “I can handle that without a problem” the other nun replied, and she picked up a six-pack and headed for the check-out. The cashier had a surprised look on his face when the two nuns arrived with a six-pack of beer. “We use beer for washing our hair,” the nun said, “back at our nunnery, we call it Catholic shampoo.” Without blinking an eye, the cashier reached under the counter, pulled out a package of pretzel sticks and placed them in the bag with the beer. He then looked the nun straight in the eye, smiled, and said: “The curlers are on the house.“

The Archdiocese of St. Louis has developed a new sys-tem for safe environment compliance called Prevent and Protect STL. Everyone ministering to minors and vulner-able adults (clergy, employees and volunteers) in the Archdiocese are required and asked to register in the new system before December 31, 2020. This includes those who are new to service and those who are currently in service. For those who have already attended a Protect-ing God’s Children workshop, your previous training date will transfer to this new system. In addition to attending a live Protecting God’s Children workshop, all clergy, volun-teers, and employees will register for an updated back-ground screening, view two new online training modules on abuse reporting and the Code of Ethical Conduct, and agree to the updated Code of Ethical Conduct.

Fish fry

volunteers needed

Our annual Fish Fry will be starting on Ash Wednesday, Febru-ary 26th and continue each Friday during Lent with the excep-

tion of Good Friday.

This is a huge event every week and we need all the volunteers we can get. In addition to physical volunteers the day of the fish fry, we need lots of desserts. If you can make or donate any items, they can be dropped off on Thursdays or Fri-days .

This year we are asking for an entire crew for clean up; we are trying to relieve some of the people that are here for several hours on Thursday and Friday.

Sign-up sheets will be in the back of church.

If you sign up and show up, please don't be discouraged if it seems we are overstaffed with people. We can always find something for everyone to do. We seem to have lots of volun-teers in the beginning and then they dwindle off in the later weeks.

This is a great opportunity for PSR students to get their volun-teer hours needed for Confirma-tion. If you have any questions, contact Tina Hartung 636-541-1435.

Decision Point

The Power of Family Rituals Rituals are powerful; they help us see what we otherwise might forget to look for. The same is true at home. Daily rituals and family traditions serve to show us and our children who we are and what matters to us. Here are some good oppor-tunities to introduce rituals into your family life.

Bedtime: Bedtime rituals can be a challenge at the end of a long day, but children often need help falling asleep as nighttime fears arise. Take this opportunity to introduce bedtime prayers to your children and to help them develop trust in God as our protector and provider. See this time spent as an investment in your child’s spiritual and emotional well-ness. As your children grow, don’t abandon the bedtime ritual, but adapt it to suit their needs.

Every Day: Some of the best family fun can be had by developing little rituals that are unique to your lives to-gether. There are many simple practices that celebrate the sacred. Perhaps every Friday night your family eats pizza, piles on the couch together, and watches a movie. Or perhaps New Year’s Day is your family’s day to go on a long hike in the woods. Value these rituals and know that they are anchors for your kids in a turbulent world.

“Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God: everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God . . .
