AUGUST 12, 2018 THE 19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 3

From Pastor Fr. George Koeune

Mass Intentions The Church states that separate Masses are to be applied for each individual offering. This means that there is to be only one intention per Mass. However, it is possible to have two Masses with “collective”

intentions during any given week. Since we do have numerous requests for Mass Intentions, we will begin having Multi-Intentional Masses starting in 2019. Again, the Church teaching is only one intention per Mass. The Multi-Intentional Masses are allowed to satisfy a multitude of requests for a Mass at a parish. Starting in 2019, the 11:00 a.m. Sunday Mass at St. Bede Church, and the Wednesday 7:30 a.m. Mass and the 12:30 p.m. Sunday Mass at St. Peter Church will be Multi-Intentional Masses. Up to ten intentions will be taken at each Multi-Intentional Mass. I have included the official teaching of the Church below regarding this issue. Book IV The Sanctifying Office of the Church 203.2.3 Policy No more than two Masses with “collective” intentions and offerings shall be offered during any given week. The proper policy about Mass offerings is spelled out in Book IV of our Archdiocesan Policies and Procedures. In policy 203, pages 15-17, it states among other matters that separate Masses are to be applied for each individual offering, as prescribed by Canon 948. Also that, by virtue of a Decree of the Congregation for the Clergy (dated March 22, 1991), each place of worship can combine individual intentions in a single Mass no more than twice a week, as an exception, to satisfy a multitude of requests for a Mass at that parish. But this is allowed only if:

a. the faithful have been explicitly informed and b. have freely consented and c. the place and time of the celebrations are made public and d. the celebrant receives only the amount of one offering, with any excess of the

usual stipend being put in the general funds of the parish or given to charity. I hope the policy of the Church is clear. If you have any questions, please call the rectory at St. Peter Church or St. Bede Church. Yours in Christ, Fr. George

The Eucharistic Prayer On the weekend I hear 2 or 3 Masses. The Eucharistic prayer is the center of the Mass, and has amazing depth. Let me give you the official theology first. Taken from the Office of Divine Worship… “The Eucharistic Prayer is the source and summit of the Mass, just as the Eucha-ristic sacrifice is the source and summit of the whole Christian life. It is during the Eucharistic Prayer that our gifts of bread and wine become the Body and blood of Christ. We call this action the consecration and this change of the elements transubstantiation. The words Jesus spoke at the Last Supper when he took bread into his hands and said, ‘This is my body,” and over the cup, ‘This is my blood,’ embody what we, as Catholics, believe occurs at Mass. We ask the Holy Spirit to transform our offering and make us one in Christ.” There are different forms of the Eucharistic prayer that the priest can choose. The most common are the 4 Universal Eucharistic Prayers. These prayers can be found in the Breaking Bread Hymnal beginning p. 12. The Eucharistic prayer eloquently tells of the love of God and prepares us for communion. Take a few minutes and read them. As life situations change, new meaning stands out to speak to your heart. I focus on the consecration, I think of the moment the earthly elements of bread and wine become the Most Precious Body and Blood. I love the elevation of the hosts, and put my whole being before Jesus. I think of the words of St. Thomas.” My Lord and my God”. We participate in the Eucharistic prayer by our attention and posture. By joining our lives to the sacrifice of Christ, and making the responses. The Eucharistic prayer ends with the Great Amen. This is our Yes, or “So be it” to the entire prayer proclaimed by the priest on our behalf. By our Amen we make the sacrifice enacted at the altar our own. I encourage you to truly pray the Eucharistic prayer with the priest each and every time. It prepares the heart, mind, and soul for Communion with Christ. Jeanine Kellman Please pray for the repose of the soul of Elaine Neuroth.

Visitation will take place at Our Lady of the Lakes Parish - St. Bede Church on Tuesday, August 14th from 9am - 11am with the Funeral Mass immediately following.

What is Kumbaya? Kumbaya is the annual Catholic Campout open to Webelos, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Venturers, and their families. It explores Catholic and Christian spirituality, but scouts of other faiths are more than welcome to attend. It will be held this year at Camp Oakarro in Wadsworth, Illinois, from Friday evening to Sunday morning, August 24 to 26th, 2018. It is a great way to start off the scouting year! If you cannot stay the night, you can also attend Kumbaya as a day camp, or just stay for the first evening. What happens at Kumbaya? Scouts camp with their unit or families, but then are split up into small groups based on their age groups. Trained Counselors lead each group all weekend and journey with them through the campout. There are skits, small group activities, large group activities, Mass, campfires, games, reflections, and time for units and families to prepare their meals. A Fellowship Lunch is provided on Saturday. Who are the Youth Counselors? Our counselors are Scouts currently working on or who have earned either the Ad Altare Dei or Pope Pius XII religious awards, high school age Girl Scouts, and Venturers up to age 21. What should we bring to Kumbaya? Enthusiasm! Troops are responsible for their own camping gear and providing their own meals (except for Saturday lunch). If you like, bring materials to create a gateway to your unit’s campsite, to bring the Kumbaya 2018 Theme “The Apostles” to life. Day campers can bring their meals and use the picnic tables in the Pavilion for meals. How to register Register at the Northeast Illinois Council website. Go to NEIC.org, click on Calendar, and then click on the Details/Register button for Kumbaya 2018. If you have questions, email Ernie Aguilar at [email protected].

Bede Bash 20 will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2018 Our theme this year is the

"Roaring Twenties"

This is one of our major fundraisers for St. Bede Church of Our Lady of the Lakes Parish.

Please help out by picking a leaf off the Giving Tree at the back of church or from one of the baskets by the

stained glass windows. Return the item with the leaf along with the completed donation form and drop it off in the church basement.

Please help us make this fundraiser a success!

SAVE THE DATE FOR BEDE BASH 20!

Please note: New hours for our Lady of the Lakes Parish Administrative Office (formerly St. Bede Church office): 9am to 4:30pm, Monday thru Friday.

Visit the St. Bede Church Library Didn’t have a chance to see the movie? Go to the Church Library and check out “Heaven Is For Real” (in the Inspiration section). “Do you remember the hospital Colton?” Sonja said. “Yes, mommy, I remember” he said.

“That’s where the angels sang to me.” When Colton Burpo made it through his emergency appendectomy, his family was overjoyed at his miraculous survival. What they weren’t expecting though, was the story that emerged in the months that followed – a story as beautiful as it was extraordinary, detailing their little boy’s trip to heaven and back. Heaven Is For Real will forever change the way you think of eternity, offering the chance to see, and believe, like a child. The library is located in the church basement. To sign out a book, just put your name, date (month/day/year) and phone number on the card (located on the book’s inside cover) and put the card in the “Signed Out Books” holder. When returning the book, put it on the shelf marked “Returns” and we’ll replace it in the library.
