“By your perseverance you will secure your lives.”

Throughout Luke’s account of the Gospel he weaves a thread that holds much of his entire work

together. Time and again the distinction between worldly things and those of heaven comes to the fore in the teachings and parables of Jesus. With that in mind we can better grasp what our Lord wants to bring to our attention in this passage before us today. Otherwise it’s difficult to overcome the seeming contradiction between the “they will put some of you to death” and the “not a hair on your head will be destroyed.” In short, the Lord’s reminding us that it’s not just about this life. We are destined for something much greater: the unending life of heaven. At some point in time each of us will reach the end of our earthly life. There is nothing we can do to change that. However, we hope that when that moment does arrive and we stand before the merciful Judge, we will have persevered in cooperating with his grace so as to secure our future, eternal happiness: the fullness of life in union with our loving God. May the God who constantly invites each of us into a deeper communion of life and love with him also grant us the gift of persevering in his grace. May he strengthen us by his love, feed us with Word and Sacrament, and spur us on to eternal life through the hope of the Resurrection.

Message from our Pastor

Month of the Holy Souls in Purgatory

The month of November is dedicated to the Holy Souls in Purgatory. It is a time that we commemorate all of those we have lost, and we are now praying for them to attain heaven. It is a tradition to visit graves in the month of November. Just as the fall season represents a time of death, we see the bright colors change and give us new hope. In the Book of Wisdom (3:1-3), we also hear about this hope. “The souls of the just are in the hands of God, and no torment shall touch them. They seemed, in the view of the foolish, to be dead; and their passing away was thought to be an affliction, and their going forth from us utter destruction. But they are at peace.” During this month especially, take time to commemorate those who have died. Keep them in your daily prayers. Amen? Amen!

Liturgical Facts We continue our mini-series on the liturgical vestments of the priest and deacon. Today, we shall focus on the next liturgical vestment: the humeral veil. The humeral veil is one of the liturgical vestments of the Roman rite, also used in some Anglican and Lutheran churches. It consists of a piece of cloth roughly 8 feet long and 2 feet wide draped over the shoulders and down the front, normally of silk or cloth of gold. At the ends there are sometimes pockets in the back for hands to go into so that the wearer can hold items without touching them with the hands. The humeral veil is of the liturgical color of the day on which it is used, or else is white or cloth of gold. It is most often seen during the liturgy of Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. When priests or deacons bless the people with the monstrance, they cover their hands with the ends of the veil so that their hands do not touch the monstrance as a mark of respect for the sacred vessel and as an indication that it is Jesus present in the Eucharist and not the minister who blesses the people. The humeral veil is also seen at the Mass of the Lord’s Supper (Holy Thursday) when the ciborium containing the Blessed Sacrament is taken in procession to the place of reposition, and again when it is brought back to the altar without solemnity during the Good Friday service.

Catechesis Is Sacred Scripture true? “The books of Scripture firmly, faithfully, and without error teach [the] truth. … Written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, they have God as their author.” (Second Vatican Council, DV 11). [103-107] The Bible did not fall from heaven in its final form, nor did God dictate it to human scribes who copied it down mechanically. Rather “God chose certain men who … made full use of their own faculties and powers so that, though he acted in them and by them, it was as true authors that they consigned to writing whatever he wanted written, and no more” (Second Vatican Council, DV 11). One factor in recognizing particular texts as Sacred Scripture was their general acceptance in the Church. In the Christian communities there had to be a consensus: “Yes, through this text God himself speaks to us —this is inspired by the Holy Spirit!” Which of the many original Christian writings are really inspired by the Holy Spirit has been defined since the fourth century in the so-called Cannon of Sacred Scriptures.

LATIN MASS: Latin Mass is celebrated at St. Cecilia every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 9 AM. Hearing and praying in Latin reminds us that what we are doing now—participating in and uniting ourselves to the Sacrifice of Christ through the form of worship that he himself left us—has been done since apostolic times. It serves as a bridge connecting us to the ancient tradition of the Church and to the universal Church throughout the world.

Calling All Young Families… Saint Margaret Saint John’s has a group just for families with young children! We meet outside by the swings on the last Sunday of every month for a playdate following the 11:00am mass. We are currently planning additional events and activities! If you aren’t involved or on our email list, but would like to be, please contact Andrea Corvi at [email protected] or 719-310-5517. JOIN US THIS WEEKEND FOR A PLAYDATE FOLLOWING THE 11:00 SUNDAY MASS!!

We have listed the former rectory on Berwick Avenue for sale this week for $294,000. This is a valuable asset to our parish. The property value was established by two independent appraisals and reviewed by the College of Consulters, who in turn advise the Archbishop on all archdiocesan property sales. For the sake of our parish and parishioners, I believe that we should attempt to realize a sale price as close to full market value as possible. Contact our realtor for information at [email protected].

A panel of recently ordained priests and deacons will discuss the importance of the Mass for them and for all Catholics. No matter how busy life may get, the Mass is always the center of the day. Learn how to make that possible and what to do when it seems loved ones no longer appreciate the gift of the Mass. Refreshments will be served. We hope to see you there!

Know Your Saints Only two popes have earned the title “Great”—Gregory I and Leo I. SAINT LEO THE GREAT was born in the beginning of the fifth century, probably in Rome. When he was a deacon, other Church leaders looked to him for advice and for explanations of the faith. Leo was sent to settle arguments between leaders. He was on such a mission in 440 when he was elected pope. He helped the Church stay united when it was being attacked inside by false teachers and outside by warring tribes. In 452, the Huns, led by Attila, marched toward Rome to destroy the city. Pope Leo went out to meet Attila and was able to stop him by agreeing to pay tribute to him every year. Three years later, another tribe marched on Rome—the Vandals, led by Genseric. Again Leo went out to meet the enemy, but this time, Leo was only able to stop the tribe from burning the city. For two weeks, the Vandals pillaged and looted Rome while the people sought shelter in the churches. Leo helped rebuild the city after the invaders departed, and he then sent missionaries to Africa to minister to those who had been captured and taken there by the Vandals. – www.loyolapress.com
