4th Sunday of Advent December 23, 2018
St. Matthias Church, 1582 Ferris Road, Columbus OH 43224 1
Parish Office PASTORAL POST
Written by Fr. Tony
As we enter into this Holy Season of Christmas, on behalf of the entire staff of
St. Matthias Church and School, we wish all of you a Merry Christmas. I am so
glad to be among you as your pastor. These past five months have been a
wonderful experience for me. You have a sense of community that is very
evident to all who come here. Thank you for the many ways you have included
me.
This Christmas, I have been thinking about our church and world. I love both,
but both are terribly divided. In the Church, we see so many different strands
of Catholicism unravelling. What was once held together through the bond of
charity is now replaced with suspicion. In the world, we see the same thing.
What was once held together through human decency is now replaced with
flat out hatred. The saddest part is that everyone is claiming to have ‘the
truth.’ Everyone thinks they have the right answer or the proper solution, even
if they are living a lie.
Truth is essential for reality. As Jean Vanier, founder of L’Arche (an
international network of communities for people with developmental
disabilities), says, “We need to strive to live in truth, because the truth sets us
free.” He goes on to say, however, “Perhaps this search for truth is a process of
letting ourselves be enfolded in truth rather than possessing truth, as if it were
an object that we could possess, that we could use against others.” (Becoming
Human, 15-16) This additional line is so important. While all of us seek the
truth, none of us is smart enough, talented enough, or loving enough to claim
that we’ve got it. Truth is always greater than my family, my political party, my
church, or my country. It is not a weapon, either. God alone possesses the
truth, for God is truth.
This Christmas, let us acknowledge a truth greater than ourselves. Truth is a
journey. With the Magi and Shepherds, may we, as a whole human family,
unite and help each other to find the star that leads us to Emmanuel, God with
us.
STEWARDSHIP MEDITATION
“For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my
womb leaped for joy.” (LUKE 1:44)
When you hear the scripture readings and Gospel reading each Sunday, do you
leap for joy? If not, don’t blame the lecturer or priest, rather look inside
yourself. Do you prepare for Mass each week or do you just show up and
expect to be entertained? We are called to be active participants, not passive
bystanders.
