From the Pastor’s Desk

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Last week, as I was at the airport preparing to fly home to see family, I went through the normal routines that all travelers go through. As I stood in line waiting for security, I noticed a woman dressed in what I believed to be Amish garb. As I got closer, I realized she was not Amish at all, but rather a religious sister. Many sisters nowadays, especially younger women of the growing religious orders, wear their habits (i.e. religious garb) as a public witness of their faith to the world. It’s a beautiful sight to see! Each religious order has their own distinctive habit, but I didn’t recognize the one she was wearing – a simple white robe with a long brown wool overlay, and a long white veil she wore on her head.

As providence would have it, she ended up on the same connecting flight as me. I’m usually not one to approach strangers and start a conversation, but the Spirit moved me to approach her and introduce myself. Turns out, her name was Sister Emmanuel of the Lamb, and she’s part of the Community of the Beatitudes, a fairly new community of priests, religious brothers and sisters, and lay members founded in 1973 in France by the well-known author and speaker Fr. Jacques Philippe. With over 50 houses in 30 countries, the Community’s spiritual life “is both Eucharistic and Marian, inspired by the Carmelite tradition and living out the spirit of the Beatitudes (Matthew 5)” (that explains the brown wool overlay, as that is indicative of Carmelite spirituality). They share fraternal life and are engaged in various apostolic and missionary activities. I found out that Sister is part of an 11-member community serving in Switzerland, primarily hosting group retreats and doing youth ministry.

We only talked for about 20 minutes, but we had a lovely talk about our ministries, the differences in ministering in Europe versus the United States, and the challenges of maintaining a prayer life outside the structure of a community. She made a comment that was very encouraging to me as a priest here in our Archdiocese, which I think should encourage us all if we are ever tempted to think that God is not at work in our local churches. She said that when she left her home in the Twin Cities in 2002 to join her religious community, she recognized that our Archdiocese was “spiritually dry”. Now, she says, things have changed dramatically. There’s a different energy in our parishes and in the local Church. She was genuinely excited about what she was seeing. Even though she didn’t articulate exactly what was responsible for the change, I believe she recognized the powerful ongoing work of the Holy Spirit.

At any point in time, I’m sure we all could make a list of the changes we’d like to see in our churches. Because change can be so slow, we don’t always recognize what progress we’ve already made. At times we want to see major changes now—we want to see mass conversions now in the hearts of our people—and so in our impatience we assert all our efforts and resources to make that happen. But sometimes, despite our best efforts, things still don’t change as quickly as we would like. It’s a recipe for frustration. In those times, we have to remember that all things are in God’s perfect time. We have to allow God the time to work out His plan in the hearts of people, while working faithfully and diligently at the tasks He entrusts to us. We have to allow God to lay down the foundations within our hearts, our homes, even our churches, so that greater works can be accomplished in the future. We get nowhere by asserting our own will over the Will of God. We have to be patient with Him, as He is patient with us.

Instead of lamenting what we may be lacking today, are we celebrating how far God has already taken us? Do we recognize that where we are today has laid a foundation for where we will one day be? Do we trust that God has been at work, and is at work even now, to bring His plan to fulfillment? “For I know well the plans I have for you…plans to prosper you and to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11).

God bless, Fr. Chris Shofner [email protected]

As we search for ways to escape these feelings of isolation, there comes a small, quiet whisper that pierces through to the depths of our

heart: “You are never alone, because you are Mine.” Join us for Music, Dancing, Laughs, Spiritual Growth.

We hope to form a group of youth from all our parishes to attend the Steubenville Conference together. Registration forms and $50 non-refundable are due to the church office as soon as possible (registration deadline has been

extended) to reserve a spot for your youth. More information and registration forms may be found at: https://stmarysthenry.org/steubenville-conference. Questions? Contact Jean Boothby at 507-357-4838 or Fr. Shofner.

Those who have contributed to the Appeal in the past should have received a mailing from CSAF. Please send in your pledge using the preaddressed envelope and payment voucher provided with the mailing or bring your completed pledge to Mass and drop it in the offering. Thank you for your generosity!

For those who have not received a CSAF mailing we will be providing an informational flyer and envelope in next weekend’s bulletin and in the church entrances. Please plan to give.

Our parish goals this year remain the same as last year: St. Mary $12,117 St. Henry $2,382

“…be doers of the word, and not hearers only.” James 1:22

What does your faith mean to you? Faith is something so personal that words cannot easily explain it. Faith can bring peace amidst turmoil, and true joy even in difficult circumstances. As Catholics, we are called to freely live out our faith and to give back to others as Christ has poured Himself out for us. The Catholic Services Appeal Foundation (CSAF) is an independent non-profit focused solely on supporting 20 designated outreach ministries and nothing else. By partnering with the CSAF, you help those in need: the hungry, the orphan, the sick, suffering, dying and grieving. You assist in ministering to the imprisoned, evangelizing Catholic youth and college students, and strengthening families. You enable the sacraments to be provided to Catholics young and old alike. To join in the work of the CSAF, simply connect via your mobile device to csafspm.org, or complete a paper pledge form and drop it in the collection basket or mail it directly to the Foundation’s office in Plymouth, MN. Thank you for responding to the Gospel call to serve the poor, support life, strengthen faith and transform lives by God’s grace - Unified We Rise!

Please welcome Fr. Steve LaCanne who will speak at all Masses this weekend on behalf of Cross Catholic Outreach, which was founded to create a meaningful link between parishes in America and the priests and nuns working in the Church overseas in the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, Central and South America. Please be generous in your response to Father’s appeal. Brochures will be provided if you wish to support this worthy Catholic ministry.
