Thank you, Westminster Church family!

Our Children’s Ministry in whole has been such a success this summer, and it is all thanks to your amazing support! Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Summer Shenanigans, and Parents’ Night Out have all been successful in:

Strengthening our kids’ relationships with Christ!Providing amazing fellowship time between our kids!Bringing unchurched kids into our church doors!Reinforcing that church is joyful, energizing, and fun!Giving way to new, exciting ways for our middle schoolers, our most mature church members, and everyone in-between, to serve our Church and God!So much more!

But don’t worry... Our Children’s Ministry this Fall 2015 will be even BETTER!

We’re going to be firing on all cylinders with the Gospel Project this Fall!During sermons, there will be preschool and elementary aged activity pages available that tie into the Gospel Project lesson for that Sunday!Children’s Sunday school will be filled with games, skits, Christ connections, and more...that all tie into the biblical lesson for that day! After every Sunday school lesson, kids will get an awesome Gospel Project card that has an awesome graphic, the Bible passage for the lesson, the big-picture question and answer, and the lesson’s connection to Christ! Gotta collect them all!Our Wednesday night lessons will take the Gospel Project lessons from Sunday even deeper, so that hopefully our kids are really able to comprehend all of our weekly lessons, rather than just hear them!

Did I mention that Parents’ Night Out will now be happening every month?! To stayed tuned in on Parent’s Night Out information and other AMAZING events that are coming this Fall for your kids, check out our Church website, and subscribe to the Children’s Ministry Chimp-Mail e-mail! (e-mail me at [email protected], and I’ll be happy to add you to the list)

The Gospel Project

Beginning on September 6th, Westminster will start an amazing three year journey through the Bible called, “The Gospel Project.” The Gospel Project is a Sunday morning experience for children, youth, and adults aimed at showing how all of the Bible

points to Jesus. This level of collaboration and organization is beyond anything we have ever attempted before, and will mean that we will know what passages the entire congregation will be studying in their groups until 2018. There are a few reasons as to why this is helpful.

1. It Helps Parents Disciple Their ChildrenParents are primarily responsible for the discipleship of their children (Deut. 6:4-9). The problem is that too many parents do not feel equipped to disciple their children, much less have intentional conversations with them about God’s Word. This is where Bible study age alignment at Westminster can help. Parents are set up to have one conversation with the entire family. It enables parents to pour into their kids from the overflow of what they learn week by week.

2. It Helps Unify the ChurchCan you imagine our entire church with one clear plan providing a consistent and thoughtful approach to discipleship? The vision of the church should be to train every age group to live in mission with God (Ps. 127:3-4). If this is to be a reality, there has to be a plan. The Gospel Project gives us a map that is evangelical, reformed, Christ centered, and missional.

3. It Gives Guests A Visual Roadmap of How We Would Disciple Their Family. As families visit our church, we will be able to demonstrate to them the intentionality we will take to teach them and their children the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They will be able to see how we would steward the most precious things in their lives, their children.

We hope you will join us on August 30th to hear about the Gospel Project during our Fall Roundup in the Family Ministry Center at 10:00AM. Classes will begin on September 6th.

Small Groups Fall 2015

As Fall approaches, let us consider our best approach for organizing small groups at Westminster. Research shows participation in small groups is highest when small groups form and reform every semester. People don’t like to commit to a lifetime of meetings but will commit to 10-12 weeks of meeting together with a small group to deepen their relationship with Jesus. How about you? Do you have a small group? Would you be willing to do it once for 10-12 weeks? What if you came away with relationships that lasted a lifetime? What if you learned more about Jesus and a little about yourself?

We will be forming groups of men, women, and couples this fall who will study the book, “A Good and Beautiful Life.” We will have the book on sale at the “Fall Roundup” on August 30th at 10:00AM. This is a perfect way for you to make a limited commitment to spend 10-12 weeks in community with others deepening your faith in Jesus.

Here is what we need from you. First, I pray that God will move in your heart and call you out of your comfort zone. The harvest is plenty, and the workers are few. We need men, women, and couples who are willing to lead the groups. Group leadership means you read the book weekly and help facilitate discussion at a weekly meeting. If you would be willing to lead such a group, please email me at [email protected].

Secondly, those of you who don’t have a small group please be in prayer about joining one for the fall. There will be an opportunity to sign up to join small groups Sunday, August 30th at the Fall Roundup at 10:00AM in the Family Ministry Center. It is our hope that many of our small groups will meet on Wednesday nights from 6:30-7:30. This time is great for families because we serve a meal at the church from 5:45-6:30, and we have childcare from 6:30-7:30.

Confirmation Class 2015SURGE is pleased to offer “Confirmation Class” on Sunday mornings during the Fall semester beginning September 13th and concluding on November 15th. Enrollment is open to students currently enrolled in 9th grade and above. There will be a total of 10 Sunday morning sessions and one weekend retreat (November 20-22). As confirming one’s faith is something not to be taken lightly, we encourage students and their families to talk about the class dates and make sure they are committed to completing the course in full. Students will only be allowed TWO absences from the 10 main sessions. As the retreat is a culmination of the course, it is a required element and cannot be missed.

We’ve had several questions from members and parents asking specifically, “Why freshman and above only? When I was confirmed, I was in the 6th grade.” The answer is this: We believe that, based on a student’s physiological maturation (say that 5 times fast!), abstract concepts like the TRINITY, the HOLY SPIRIT, FAITH and the like are better discussed when a student has matured to the point where he or she can truly grasp and feel comfortable discussing abstract ideas. Literally, as the frontal lobe of their brain continues to develop, they can more easily wrap their heads around such amazing topics as Christ’s Crucifixion, the Canon of the Bible, the Persevering of the Saints, and so on. Although there might be some amazing middle school students who are exceptions to this rule, generally speaking, 9th grade and above is the natural time for students to begin to question their realities, their physical and mental constructs, and to begin to formulate “who they are” and what they believe in…”Is it just mom and dad’s faith, or is it my own?”

Over the 10 weeks of study, we will be digging through a newly updated, youth-centric version of the ALPHA course. Many of you have most likely partaken in or at least heard of the adult Alpha courses that have been taught for many years. The folks at Alpha recently produced an all-new, 10 week youth video series that guides the student through topics like “Why Did Jesus Die?,” “How Can I Have Faith?,” and “How Can I Resist Evil?”

The class is open to all students, baptized or not, who have not previously gone through confirmation and are enrolled in grades 9-12. Registration is available online at www.wpclubbock.org/surgewpc and is open through Sunday, September 6th.

We pray for the service, the prayer requests submitted each week, for those who come to the voucher program, and other needs of WPC. We have intercessors for our pastors. Will you take an hour once a quarter and sign up to pray on a Sunday? You may email Bev Day at [email protected] with your desired date and time.

“Call to Prayer” Group Meets WeeklyPlease join us for a weekly Call to Prayer each Monday at 7:00pm in the Chapel. We meet as a body to pray purposefully for our pastors and church staff, current and future ministries supported by WPC, as well as each other, and anything else the Spirit lays before us.
