CHURCH OF ST. AUGUSTINE, LARCHMONT, New York NOVEMBER 19, 2017

THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Pastor’s Corner THE FABLE OF THE BIRDS

There is a legend that after God had created all of the ani-mals of the wood, the newly-made animals walked around, happily discovering what it was like to be alive and getting used to their new bodies—all except the birds. While the other ani-mals had legs so they could run or fins so that they could swim, the birds could just hop a few steps. They thought God had punished them by giving them these awkward appendages on their shoulders. Why us? They wondered. Why do we have to struggle to get around with these “things” on our backs? But one bird soon discovered that it could move those “things” on its back, that by flapping them up and down the bird could lift itself off the ground higher and higher into the air. Then another one began to flap its appendages. And then another and another and another. The birds discovered that they could soar into the skies—while no other animal could. The birds discovered that what they thought was a “heavy bur-den” was actually a wonderful gift from God. Whether we believe it or not, each one of us has been given something unique and special from God that we can use to con-tribute to the work of creation. Sometimes the very “thing” that we consider to be a handicap or disadvantage or burden may lead us to discover the particular gift we (or another person) possess. But, as Jesus teaches us in the parable of the talents, such grace demands work on our part, the faith to “flap our wings” and a willingness to place our “talents” at the service of others. Our greatness lies not in the greatness of our talents in themselves but of the greatness of our love to use them to build the kingdom of God in our own time and place. Connections, November 1996.

NOVEMBER A MONTH TO REMEMBER

During the month of November we are called in a special way “to remember our brothers and sisters who have gone to their rest.” A book of the names of our dead will be kept in our church near the pulpit from All Saints until Thanksgiving. Our parishioners are invited to write the names of their deceased in this book.

THANKSGIVING INTERFAITH SERVICE

The Larchmont/Mamaroneck Interfaith Council will have a special Thanksgiving Service at St. Thomas Church, 168 West Boston Post Road, Mamaroneck, on Sunday, November 19th at 7:00 pm. Members of sev-eral houses of worship will be participating. All are wel-come and encouraged to come to this yearly community event. Refreshments will be served following the service. Please bring donations of non-perishable food items for collection for the local Food Pantry.

THANKSGIVING DINNER DRIVE The Annual Thanksgiving Dinner Drive prepa-rations have begun. Posters are in the church to sign up and provide a dinner for individuals and

families in need in our community Thanksgiving Day. The meals should be complete, fully cooked and in a sturdy box stating how many the meal will feed. We ask that you do not get pre-cooked meals as they are cooked and then frozen. Side dishes and desserts are also gratefully accepted if you cannot do a whole meal. If you will be away the holiday, grocery gift cards are much appreciated as well. The meals should be deliv-ered to the church between 8:00—9:00 am Thanksgiv-ing morning. Volunteers are needed to deliver the meals after the 9:30 am Mass. For more information, call Anne Avenius at 914-527-6762 or [email protected] or Margaret Paganini at 914-806-1213, [email protected].

ADVENT CHRISTMAS WREATHS Buy your Advent/Christmas Wreaths and Support the

Hurricane Victims in Puerto Rico and the Local Food Pantry

Our Confirmation candidates and their parents will be selling wreaths on Sunday, December 3rd after all the Masses in front of the church. Candles and wreath rings will also be available for purchase. The wreaths are com-ing from Sisters Gail, Bernadette, Amie, Elizabeth and Kris-tian at the Green Mountain Monastery in Greensboro, Vermont. The Sisters hand harvest the balsam from their trees in the forest on their property for you. They trim the balsam branches to encourage heartier trees and receive the incredibly fragrant gift of these noble friends of the forest in return. In a world where we are presented with the devastation of Earth and its life systems, this wreath offers a different way of being human within the sacred community of life. Each wreath is 20 inches with a bow and pine cones. The cost is $25 with $5 going to help two charities. We are hoping to sell 125 wreaths and give $400 to the vic-tims of the hurricane in Puerto Rico through the Catholic Extension Society and $225 to the local Hope Food Pantry. Please reserve a wreath by signing the poster in the back of the church or emailing Sister Suzanne at [email protected] (new email). You may pay in advance and send a check (St. Augustine’s Rel. Ed.) or pay in cash or check when you pick up the wreath. Please support this venture of mercy.
