Life Reflections RVIN ORLANDO (LANCE) PEEBLES was born August 15, 1958 in St. Louis, MO to the union of Alberta (Bledsoe) and Irvin Peebles, who preceded him in death. From an early age, his family and friends realized and recognized the tremendous talent given to him by God for the love of music and all things musical. He began playing the piano at the tender age of two and progressed into a gifted musician. By the age of nine, he was playing for the Devotional Missionary Baptist Church in Kinloch, MO. Lance, a nickname affectionately given to him by his mother, gave his life to Christ, was baptized and accepted his calling into the ministry at age seven at the Devotional Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. Nathaniel Dunn, Sr. There, he preached his first of many sermons entitled, “The Solid Rock”. He continued to serve as a faithful member and musician after the death of their Pastor under the new leadership of Rev. Earbie Bledsoe until he moved to Dallas, TX in 1984. Originally from Kinloch, MO, Lance attended and graduated from Berkeley Senior High School, Berkeley, MO in 1976 with high achievements. He served as the Berkeley Troubadour Yearbook Editor, sang and traveled with the Berkeley High School Mixed Choir and was a member of the Berkeley High School Debate Team. In his last year of high school, he traveled Europe, experiencing the cultures and excitement of fine art and French cuisine. He also won the Blue Ribbon Award for a painting which was showcased as one of the finalist in a New York City Exhibition. Upon high school graduation, he began working at St. Louis Lambert Airport. Later, he honed in on his natural skills as a painter and went to work as an apprentice for Alliance Painting Company. It was owned by his uncle, the late Mr. Ether Bledsoe, and was the first Black-Owned Painting Company in the St. Louis area. On November 10, 1979 in St. Louis, MO, he married Wanda Knox and to this union were born four beautiful sons, Courtney, Scott, Kirk and Dexter. After their move to Dallas in 1984, they joined Concord Church, under the late Rev. E.K. Bailey. There he attended the Concord Center for Biblical Studies and became an Ordained Minister. Lance was a man of many talents. As a singer, he could make you cry with his passionate and skillful renditions of many songs. He also contributed his marvelous singing voice as a member of St. Louis Symphony In Unison Chorus. His creativity was ever-woven into his preaching and his teaching styles. His musical gifts extended to an ability to teach how to play just about any instrument he set his mind to play. He was a writer, writing short stories that would take you away and make you believe they really happened. He also wrote poems and perhaps to no one’s surprise, songs…many, many songs. But if you knew anything about Lance, you were well aware of, as his son Courtney would say, his “skills in the culinary arts”. In other words, “the man could cook his butt off”- from every day meals such as, fried chicken, green beans and corn bread to more formal dishes such as his infamous “Seafood Pasta Tuttomare”. Everything he cooked was filled with love and everyone felt welcomed at the table. His grandchildren are the loves of his life and the center of his heart. To him he was simply “Big Daddy”. They could do no wrong. He adored them and spent countless hours showing them his unwavering love and affection. He even built an elaborate and colorful tree house in his back yard and would engage their help and assistance in the process whenever possible. They helped him paint and decorate it. Then he put each of the grandchildren’s name inside in gold letters. It stands there today, eagerly awaiting their smiles and laughter. Lance also loved carpentry, construction, remodeling, refurbishing furniture, pottery design, and almost anything that would lend itself to his creative vibe. During the holidays and on special occasions, he and the grandchildren would make gifts from old popsicle sticks, wood pieces and art and craft items. Then he’d watch them as they smiled and handed them out one by one. He had a natural talent and knack when it came to making old things look new, shiny and beautiful. Nothing around him seemed to stay the same. Once he came on site it was destined to be transformed. Transformation seemed to be the theme of everything he did and everyone whose lives he touched. He was known for his generosity inside and outside the faith-based St. Louis community as a pastor, teacher, musician, vocalist and all around faithful servant of God. From his early days playing the piano for churches such as Friendship M.B. Church, in Kinloch, MO, Mt. Beulah M.B. Church, Pastor E.G. Shields, and Christian Faith Center, under his current Pastor, Bishop Melvin Dunn, Sr., he has exemplified excellence and the Spirit of God. From his first pastoral position as Pastor of The Good Samaritan Church, St. Louis, MO to his final position as Lead Pastor of The Church Triumphant, Pastor Lance showed the same love of God and the love of God’s people to all who entered his doors. Pastor Lance Peebles received his wings on Sunday, July 23, 2017 (his father’s birthday). He leaves to cherish his memory, life and legacy, his mother, Alberta Peebles; Four sons, Courtney Orlando Peebles (Deborah), St. Louis, MO, Scott Christian Peebles (Kineta), Baltimore, MD, Kirk Isaac Peebles (Brittney), Noblesville, IN and Dexter Lance Peebles, St. Louis MO; Nine grandchildren, Keenan, Christian, Kyliegh, Kadin, Liam, Briley, Karson, Kourtney and Kylin; Four Sisters, Staretta McBride, Miriam Conner, Shelia Dunigan and Alicia Bledsoe, all of St. Louis, MO; One God-Sister, Nykyta Humphries; Six God-Children, Lynell Irvin-Peebles, James Cousin, Kimberly Martin, Brittanie Peebles and Carlene (Dusty) McKinley (who preceded him in death); Six aunts, Ollie Peebles, Odyster Whittington, Mary L. Gardner, Christine Reese, Dora and Callie Bledsoe; Five uncles, Rev. Earbie Bledsoe, Mack, Marvin, Jack, and Nathaniel Peebles; One special uncle, Jimmy Adams of St. Louis, MO; One special friend, Ms. Ann Holmes and a host of other relatives, friends and co-laborers in the ministry. He will be greatly missed.
