Pastor Clay’s Potter’s Wheel As I was driving westward on I-94 late Sunday afternoon to visit my hospitalized cousin in Minneapolis, I couldn’t help but notice the intensity and sense of urgency with which some people were driving. One young woman, in particular, stood out. As I was driving in the right lane - my cruise control set at about 68mph - another car was to my left barely passing me. His cruise control must have been set at 68.1mph. I think we’ve all experienced this. As we were traveling down the highway side-by-side I noticed a small white car in my rear-view mirror. It was gaining on me - and fast. As the white car approached my car it jerked into the left lane and rode right up on the other car’s bumper, coming within a five or six feet of the lead car in the left lane. Granted, that lead driver should have sped up to get around me faster to let the following car pass, but apparently clicking the + button on his cruise control was too much effort. As the little white car ever so slowly pulled abreast of my car I looked at its driver. She was a young woman (early to mid -20s) and she had a scowl on her face, she was leaning forward, both her hands tightly gripped her steering wheel, her jaw was clenched, her lips were turned down, and her lower lip was literally jutting out in what I interpreted as an expression of impatience and disgust. After what was probably a minute and a half, the lead car in the left lane had finally pulled just far enough ahead of me to leave enough space for the young lady in the white car to bolt into the right lane, which she did, barely clearing my front bumper. She did not use her right turn signal. As she put the pedal to the metal and quickly accelerated to at least 85mph – blue smoke belching from her exhaust pipe - I wondered what her heart rate and blood pressure must have been, not to mention her mental and spiritual state! This young lady is symbolic of how many of us live our lives – working longer and harder, taking on more and more responsibilities, missing suppers at home, eating on the run (and then often consuming unhealthy food!), staying up late and getting up early, trying to juggle too many balls in the air at once, push, push, push! Our political and economic systems encourage this kind of overwork with scary talk about America losing its competitive edge, foreign workers exceeding American workers’ productivity, that we have to work longer and harder for less pay and benefits, or else….. One the one hand, the Scriptures certainly do warn against laziness (e.g. Proverbs 6:6-11), but on the other hand, they just as certainly promote rest, going all the way back to the Creation Account in the first two chapters of Genesis. Jesus also takes time to rest, along with his disciples. Consider the following two passages: Genesis 2:2 And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done. Mark 6:31-32 He [Jesus] said to them [the 12 disciples], " “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while." For many [other people] were coming and going, and they [Jesus and his disciples] had no leisure even to eat. 32 And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. We can choose from many Lenten practices in our quest to draw closer to God. On Ash Wednesday we learned about fasting, almsgiving, and prayer. Here’s one more: Rest. After we have worked diligently, God desires we take time to refresh ourselves through the practice of rest. Taking time to rest may seem obvious, but many of us need a reminder to set aside specific times to slow down, to relax, to enjoy, and even to sleep. From the CHRIST IN OUR HOME February 18 th devotion Scripture passage we read, “By this we may be sure that we are in him [Christ]: whoever says, ‘I abide in him,’ ought to walk just as he walked.” (1 John 2:5b-6) As we progress through these 40 days of Lent we remember Jesus’ and the disciples’ journey included time for rest. And so as we walk just as Jesus walked we remember to take a deep breath, to pause, to enjoy, and to rest. Whatever “car” is in front of us will soon make way and we will get to our destination… well rested. Lenten Blessings to You, Pastor Clay march, 2013

Pastor Clay’s Potter’s Wheel

As I was driving westward on I-94 late Sunday afternoon to visit my hospitalized cousin in

Minneapolis, I couldn’t help but notice the intensity and sense of urgency with which some people were

driving. One young woman, in particular, stood out. As I was driving in the right lane - my cruise control set

at about 68mph - another car was to my left barely passing me. His cruise control must have been set at

68.1mph. I think we’ve all experienced this. As we were traveling down the highway side-by-side I noticed a

small white car in my rear-view mirror. It was gaining on me - and fast. As the white car approached my car

it jerked into the left lane and rode right up on the other car’s bumper, coming within a five or six feet of the

lead car in the left lane. Granted, that lead driver should have sped up to get around me faster to let the

following car pass, but apparently clicking the + button on his cruise control was too much effort. As the little

white car ever so slowly pulled abreast of my car I looked at its driver. She was a young woman (early to mid

-20s) and she had a scowl on her face, she was leaning forward, both her hands tightly gripped her steering

wheel, her jaw was clenched, her lips were turned down, and her lower lip was literally jutting out in what I

interpreted as an expression of impatience and disgust.

After what was probably a minute and a half, the lead car in the left lane had finally pulled just far

enough ahead of me to leave enough space for the young lady in the white car to bolt into the right lane, which

she did, barely clearing my front bumper. She did not use her right turn signal. As she put the pedal to the

metal and quickly accelerated to at least 85mph – blue smoke belching from her exhaust pipe - I wondered

what her heart rate and blood pressure must have been, not to mention her mental and spiritual state!

This young lady is symbolic of how many of us live our lives – working longer and harder, taking on

more and more responsibilities, missing suppers at home, eating on the run (and then often consuming

unhealthy food!), staying up late and getting up early, trying to juggle too many balls in the air at once, push,

push, push! Our political and economic systems encourage this kind of overwork with scary talk about

America losing its competitive edge, foreign workers exceeding American workers’ productivity, that we have

to work longer and harder for less pay and benefits, or else…..

One the one hand, the Scriptures certainly do warn against laziness (e.g. Proverbs 6:6-11), but on the

other hand, they just as certainly promote rest, going all the way back to the Creation Account in the first two

chapters of Genesis. Jesus also takes time to rest, along with his disciples. Consider the following two

passages:

Genesis 2:2 And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the

seventh day from all the work that he had done.

Mark 6:31-32 He [Jesus] said to them [the 12 disciples], "“Come away to a deserted place all by

yourselves and rest a while." For many [other people] were coming and going, and they [Jesus and his

disciples] had no leisure even to eat. 32 And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves.

We can choose from many Lenten practices in our quest to draw closer to God. On Ash Wednesday

we learned about fasting, almsgiving, and prayer. Here’s one more: Rest. After we have worked diligently,

God desires we take time to refresh ourselves through the practice of rest. Taking time to rest may seem

obvious, but many of us need a reminder to set aside specific times to slow down, to relax, to enjoy, and even

to sleep. From the CHRIST IN OUR HOME February 18th devotion Scripture passage we read, “By this we

may be sure that we are in him [Christ]: whoever says, ‘I abide in him,’ ought to walk just as he walked.”

(1 John 2:5b-6) As we progress through these 40 days of Lent we remember Jesus’ and the disciples’ journey

included time for rest. And so as we walk just as Jesus walked we remember to take a deep breath, to pause,

to enjoy, and to rest. Whatever “car” is in front of us will soon make way and we will get to our destination…

well rested.

Mission of the month—Autism I-pads Project

Please consider helping this worthwhile cause. A symptom of autism is verbal and

nonverbal communication problems. Individuals with autism have a difficult time

expressing their feelings, forming words, and communicating in general. The iPad

revolutionized and unlocked the communication barrier for children on the autism

spectrum. The iPad gives a voice to the voiceless. The iPad apps for autism are easy-to-

use, and allow for children to put words and symbols together and eventually create

sentences using images. They are also extremely mobile.

Please make checks payable to Grace Lutheran Church with Autism I-Pad Project written in the memo line.

SCRIP Order Deadline: March 3 Remember to support Grace by purchasing gift cards for everyday

use; gas, groceries, restaurants, and more! DID YOU KNOW you

can use your Kohls SCRIP card to pay your Kohls credit card bill?

Lakes Scrip program.

The Blue Bottle Club by Penelope Stokes

In 1929, four friends gathered in a cold, dusty attic on Christmas day to make a solemn pact. "Our dreams

for the future," they whispered, placing tiny pieces of paper into a blue bottle. But the girls' dreams of

love, fame, and success take a twisted path of difficulty caused by seduction, betrayal, and loss––and

nothing turns out as expected. Years later, local news reporter Brendan Delaney stumbles upon the bottle

and discovers the most poignant story of her career...and possibly the meaning she's searched for all her

life.

February has been a fun, loving month at preschool! Our

preschoolers have been busy learning many new and exciting

things. Our three year old class had an awesome time learning

about the color pink, hearts, and artic animals. They painted pink hearts, finger painted with

red and white to make pink, made polar bear puppets and artic snow pictures. They also did

patterns with hearts and made hearts out of pink play dough. The Bible story for this class

was about how God helped feed 5000 people with just 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread. What a

miracle!!

Our four year old class started the month with a Dental Health and Nutrition unit. We were

happy to visit Dr. Piernot’s dental office for another field trip. Almost everyone sat in the

chair and had their teeth counted. It was a great experience and contributed to learning how

to take care of our teeth. Our letters this month were V, P and T. We made valentine visors,

had a pizza and pajama party and talked about transportation. We also learned about the

Bible story where Jesus calms the storm. We talked about His love for us and how “We love

because He first loved us”.

Both classes had a wonderful time exchanging valentines and having a Valentine’s Day Party

together!! What a great way to celebrate with our preschoolers!! We love them all so much!!

We have a very important upcoming event. Grace Pre-School will be hosting our Annual

Open House on Thursday, March 7th from 4:30pm-6:30pm. This is a great time for anyone

interested in preschool for our 2013-2014 school year. Children may come with their parents

and tour the classroom, meet the teachers, go on a scavenger hunt and pick out a prize.

Information will be available on our program and registrations will be accepted at this time.

We are looking forward to meeting new families and welcoming back our current families!! If

you know of anyone who would be interested in more information, please let us know. The

phone number for the preschool is 748-5465. Thank you!

Altar Flowers for 2013 The 2013Altar Flowers sign-up calendar is posted

on the wall next to the church office door in the

entryway. You may designate Altar Flowers in

honor or memory of loved ones or a special

occasion. This information will be printed in the

bulletin for that Sunday. Sign up in advance by

writing your name on the chart or by calling the

office. The cost for Altar Flowers is $15.00. After

the last service for that Sunday, you may pick up

your flowers. If you need to take the vase liners

home, please return them by the following

Tuesday. If you do not want to take your flowers

home, please notify the church office.

For more information, contact the church office.

PAGE 11

Sponsor a Bulletin

If you would like to sponsor a Sunday

worship bulletin, please indicate on the

calendar in the entryway the Sunday you

wish to sponsor and the event it

commemorates (if there is one). The

cost of a weekly sponsorship is $25 and

can be paid to Norine in the office.

Worship Assistants

The sign-up board will be left open until our newsletter, Grace Notes, will be published (about the 22nd of

the month). At that time, the Worship Committee will assign the open slots with the names of those who

indicated on their Time and Talent Sheets that they’d like to participate. Please do not change the board

without notifying the office. Thank you for your help with our worship services.

IF YOU CANNOT HELP on the date(s) assigned, please find someone to take your place. Please

notify the office of the change.
