Happy Sabbath Day

The Pray-er and His Prayer. The Buddists of Tibet use a convenient

instrument to speed up the process of prayer. They employ what is called

a “prayer wheel” – a cylindrical drum containing written prayers. Each

revolution of the wheel, they believe, represents one repetition of a pray-

er. Sometimes these cylinders are mounted so as to be turned by the

wind, making the “prayers” completely mindless.

Sometimes our approach to prayer is in danger of becoming just

as methodical and impersonal. But when it does-when the pray-er and his

prayer are anything but fused into a truly spiritual experience-the would-

be worshiper loses the most intense opportunity for true communion and

soul-deep refreshment.

In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, King Claudius, still tied to his love for

things acquired by sin, rises from an effort to pray with the recognition of

futility: “My words fly up, my thoughts remain below; words without

thoughts never to heaven go!” And so it must ever be unless the one who

prays and what he or she prays are truly one!
