Divine Mercy Sunday – April 28th
Today, Divine Mercy Sunday, was designated so by Pope John Paul II in 2003 shortly after the canonization of Sister Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun. Her spiritual legacy to the Church was in-spired by a vision in which Jesus himself told her that a painting should be made of his image with the invocation "Jesus, I trust in you." Pope John II himself gave the world a wonderful example of forgiveness when he went to the prison in Rome to forgive the young man Mehmet Ali Agca who at-tempted to assassinate him in St. Peter’s Square on May 13, 1981.
Pope Francis who declared 2016 a Year of Mercy is very supportive of Divine Mercy Sunday. We will observe Divine Mercy Sunday with the Divine Mercy Chaplet at 2:00 p.m. in Church to-day, Sunday, April 28th. Confessions will also be available.
Today, we observe Divine Mercy Sunday. On August 17, 2003, St. John Paul II entrusted the world to Divine Mercy on the Second Sunday of Easter. While the spiritual movement of Divine Mercy was initiated by Sister Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun, the essence of her mission had its source in today’s Gospel, in which Jesus entrusts the mission of Reconciliation and Mercy to his apostles in the Upper room in Jerusalem on Easter Sunday.
Jesus entrusted the ministry of reconciliation to priests as the successors of the Apostles: “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” He commissioned and he empowered them, “He breathed on them and said, ‘whose sins you forgive are forgiven them. Whose sins you retain are retained” (John 20: 21-23).

Church Service Center collection next weekend
We ask you to keep our First Communion Class in your prayers. They will receive Communion for the first time on Sunday, May 5th, at the 10:30 a.m. Mass.
Mass will be followed by refreshments, provided by the Ladies Guild, immediately after Mass in the Grogan Center.
There will be a professional photographer taking each individual First Communion child’s photo when he/she receives communion for the first time. The group photo of the Communion Class will be taken in the Grogan Center immediately after Mass. There will also be separate communion photos taken in the Grogan Center immediately after Mass. The Office of Religious Education will make these photos available to the parents of the First Communion children.
We commend our DRE, Angie Heiring, for facilitating the preparation for First Communion. We thank Catechist Jackie Jackson, her daughter Jade, Brisa Luevano, Doreen Pearlman, and Diana Torres, for preparing the children for First Communion.
We invite you to bring non-perishable food to Church at all masses next weekend, May 4/5. The Church Service Center (CSC) is an interchurch collaborative effort which cares for 500 families every month, representing approximately 1,200 poor people in Avon Park.
