1 I couldn’t answer you call because I was driving. (la acción de conducir estaba en curso, había empezado y no había terminado)

2 We were walking in the mountains when we saw a strange animal. (vimos el animal, pero no lo estábamos viendo, sino que fue algo que ocurrió de repente, ocurrió y se acabó)

3 He had an accident while he was playing rugby with his friends. (la acción de jugar al rugby estaba en curso, había empezado y no había terminado)

While he was doing his homework, I was reading a magazine. (Aquí tenemos dos acciones que estaban en curso simultáneamente, al mismo tiempo, no hablamos en absoluto de cuando terminaron, sino de que estaban ocurriendo)

While I was swimming in the river, I saw some frogs. (La acción de nadir estaba en curso y mientras se estaba desarrolando la de ver las ranas ocurrió y se acabó. Otra cosa sería haber estado mirando las ranas. ver conviene más para past simple, mirar (watch) para continuo)

6 He missed the train because he was talking with some friends. (perdió el tren, fue una acción puntual, pero la charla con los amigos estaba en proceso, y precisamente porque fue duradera ocurrió la otra)

I was having dinner, and my sister was having a shower. (Aquí tenemos dos acciones que estaban en curso simultáneamente, al mismo tiempo, no hablamos en absoluto de cuando terminaron, sino de que estaban ocurriendo)

8 It started to rain while she was watering the flowers in her garden. (hablamos de la repentina aparición de la lluvia mientras la acción de regar estaba en proceso, se estaba realizando)

9 The exam was very difficult. I didn’t finish it. (No lo terminé, aquí no estoy hablando del momento en que lo estaba terminando)

Just when I was finishing the exam, the light went off. (la luz se fue, acción puntual, mientras yo estaba sumido en otra acción, que era terminar mi examen. Había empezado a terminarlo, estaba en ello, y no había acabado)
