ContentsIt was jaw dropping when my computer died on

me at 2am the day before deadline. In return,

I enjoyed a moment in tranquility with myself

and myself only in the office on a hot and rainy

Sunday afternoon. I can see my fellow JC s have

been engaged in bid book writing and annual

general meetings. Tranquility is an enjoyment.

However, most of us fear of sliding from solitude

to loneliness. I wish each and every one of you

will reserve some time for yourself to recuperate.

That economic justice can best be won by

That government should be of laws rather

MessagefromNationalPresident

Paul WU

We believe that Internationalism is one major attraction in our organization - Junior Chamber

International.

Every year, there is a conference in each of the four areas-Asia Pacific, Americas, Africa

and the Middle East, Europe-in summer and World Congress in autumn. These international

conferences and congress provide us the platform to share our idea among different regions of

the world. In JCI, we have 4,796 local organization members and 173,569 members in over 110

regions and countries.

JCI is the network of Active Citizens worldwide, providing impacts to community and society.

Through the internationalism of JCI network, our members serve the betterment of the world.

Each JCI member shares the belief that in order to create lasting positive change, we must

improve ourselves and the world around us.

Our organization closely works with our partner United Nations, UNICEF, AIESEC, Pan

American Health Organization (PAHO), International Chamber of Commerce –World Chambers

Federation (ICC-WCF), Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations (CONGO), Pure Charity,

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and United Nations

Foundation. Collaboration with these global partners allows us to increase impact by sharing

resources, engaging all sectors of society and creating shared value for the community. We

can achieve more than working independently.

This issue of Harbour Lights introduces how this uniqueness of internationalism development

of JCI could benefit our members as well as our community. Through the better understanding,

I hope our members and readers get empowered by invaluable exposure to international

opportunity.

Lastly, I wish you enjoy the Internationalism of JCI and look forward to meeting you all in JCI

World Congress Rio de Janeiro in coming November.

Interview withPNP George Lung MH JPPast National President George Lung is experienced and seasoned in international affairs. In his Junior Chamber International (abbreviated as “JCI”) career as a leader, not only he mobilized the Hong Kong Jaycees to host the World Conference, he later on took up the leadership as JCI Vice President and JCI Executive Vice President, to lead and to guide JCs all around the world to be an active citizen.

Interview withPNP George Lung MH JP

G: Past National President George Lung

J: Jacob Ip

J: Thank you for Past National President George

in offering us an interview opportunity. Would

you tell us your learning experience from a new

member to be a JCI Executive Vice President?

G: At first when I participated in JCI projects, I had a

so-so impression on the performance and people

in JCI Hong Kong. Until I visited the Asia Pacific

Conference in Macau, I opened my eyes. Works

and tasks were well-delegated and worked like

clockwork. This is when I found the passion in be

hands on in JCI projects and activities.

To be honest, I grew up with lower self-esteem.

I always felt inadequate. When I started my

career, I strived to learn and develop myself.

When I learned about “JCI is the largest youth

international organization” from my colleagues, I

joined my first JCI activity. When first introduced

by the event host, I was so nervous I felt a sore in

my knees. I have a fear in public speaking and to

new environment. I decide to overcome my fears

and challenge my comfort zone, and joining JCI.

J: What is the most impressive thing you found

when serving in the world level in JCI?

G: Those who served in the world level are more

committed.

J: This is a known fact that there are variances and

difference amongst all cultures in the world. How

did you cope with the difficulties aroused when

you served JCI in the world circuit?

G: When comes to differences, this is important to

recognize and acknowledge the existence of the

difference. I personally am adaptive. I don’t find it

difficult in coping with change of circumstances

over time.

J: Would you share some experience or stories?

G: When I was the JCI Vice President, I visited the

Philippines. I was invited to an event starting at

8pm. I arrived on time, at 8pm. However, un. I was

unable to delivery my speech until 11pm guests

and members arrived.

On the context of delay in program of the event,

this could be considered bad. It may seem the

sense of punctuality is absent. However, if this is

thought about in depth, there is else merit to be

appreciated.

Rarely a JCI Vice President visits the Philippines,

everyone in the Philippines JC wishes to attend

the event. However, back in the years, traffic

and public transportation were not convenient.

In that case, the Philippines JCs JCs carpooled

from afar. Even though some of the JCs arrived

at 11pm, I know they hopped onto the car

immediately after work. This is real difficulties,

but from that we understand the respect and

hospitality the local JCs tried to deliver.

J: What would you advise the JCI Hong Kong and

the 2014 Presidents of Hong Kong local chapters

towards international affairs?

G: First and foremost, I hope each and every one of

you will treasure the experience in JCI. Not only

we are the largest international organization for

young people, our system and culture is a real

treasure. Think about it, every year our system

and culture motivated several hundreds of new

leaders to strive and innovate for JCI. Our culture

and system switches leader on an annual basis,

yet this could be uphold just fine over the years.

We must treasure and preserve this culture, to

foster the future development of JCI.

Secondly, each and every year’s board of

directors should consider the full picture.

As mentioned above, we have new board of

directors every year to allow more opportunities

to members. In this situation, the leader tends

to implement their plan in haste, prioritizing

current year achievement over the strategic

development for the oncoming years.

With the help of Producer Wong Chun Chun, Producer Gus Liem, Director Prisken Lo and their production team, three microfilms are finally produced. The microfilms released June 28, 2013. The 30-sec trailer is broadcasted in Central Station, Causeway Station and Tsim Sha Tsui Station from June 28 to July 2, from July 6 to July 10 and from July 11 to July 14 respectively.

They believe as young leaders in Hong Kong, they must preserve our home for future generations while also developing Hong Kong to support ever-growing populations. Therefore, the coming plan for JCI Hong Kong leaders is to promote Active Citizen Framework (ACF) in the society and collaborate with potential partners that have objectives similar to those of JCI and goals that align with our project. You can learn more about Active Citizen Framework through http://www.jci.cc/acf/

It was a meaningful event that participants experienced the simulated life as a refugee, facing fears and being helpless. The simulation ended with a debriefing for the participants to discuss about the simulative experience. The participants from different Nationalities including Thailand, Italy, Philippines, Britain, America, Mainland China and Hong Kong had a fruitful discussion. JCI East Kowloon, affiliated with the international organization, JCI, offers a lot of international exposure to members. Having sisterhood pacts with three JCI chapters in Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan and through attending JCI Area Conferences and World Congress, members enjoy many chances to interact with jaycees from other countries.

Our projects also go international to echo with the UN Global Compact and United Nations Millennium Development Goals (UNMDG). Since 2011, we have hosted the UNMDG x Global Citizens Debate Competition under the JCIHK Project Series to promote UNMDGs to secondary school students. This year, the scale of competition (May – September 2013) is bigger, bringing bigger impact to the society.
