Section 2 – Essay questions Choose two (2) of the following questions and write an essay response. Each question is worth 10 marks = 20 total for this section. Time guide: 35 minutes each question – we recommend you spend 5 minutes planning your essay and 30 minutes writing. 1. Imagine  you  are  an  economic  geographer  called  upon  to  advise  a  local  council  on  how  they

might  use  their  locational  advantage  to  host  a  local  music  festival.  Discuss  this  in  relation  to  some  of  the  concepts  you  have  learnt  in  this  unit.  You  may  write  about  this  in  the  abstract  or  using  any  named  examples  you  are  familiar  with.

2. Explain  -‐  with  reference  to  the  population,  urban  and  economic  trends  discussed  in  the  unit  -‐  what  has  led  to  the  urban  decline  in  a  manufacturing  city  such  as  Geelong  in  Victoria.  What  measures  might  a  city  government  introduce  to  address  this  decline?

3. It  has  been  suggested  that  a  ‘whole  economy  model’  (Friedmann,  1992)  be  used  to

consider  the  development  of  a  nation.  Explain  what  this  means,  and  evaluate  its  strengths  and  weaknesses  as  a  concept  compared  with  standard  measures  of  development  such  as  GDP.

4. “The  grapes  that  sit  upon  the  supermarket  shelves  are  mute;  we  cannot  see  the

fingerprints  of  exploitation  upon  them  or  tell  immediately  what  part  of  the  world  they  are  from”  (Harvey,  1990:  422-‐3).  Comment  on  the  extent  to  which  this  statement  is  true.

5. High-‐income  countries  consume  disproportionately  more  of  the  global  resources  than

their  population  figures  would  suggest.  Discuss  how  this  is  so,  and  some  of  the  environmental,  social  and  economic  challenges  that  trend  raises.
