There’s been plenty going on at the club lately. Have you been by to see what’s happening? First, let’s give a big thanks to Bart and Cindy Thorne and to Paul and Lisa Tomlinson. These guys really put the “Wow, Man” in last month’s 70’s Party. It felt like there was more than a little channeling of the Dukes of Hazzard in the crowd. The 2016 Past Commodores and Past Auxiliary Presidents Party was held at the club earlier this month. If you have not been able attend, please make every effort for next year. It is one of our personal favorites. Most importantly, Caroline and I want to extend our many, many thanks to the Auxiliary, and to the volunteers who cooked up all the deliciousness and made this party truly special. Thank You ! And in case you’ve been off planet, CSC is getting a new Multipurpose/Educational building & Bathhouse down by the beach and campgrounds. At a special membership meeting a few weeks back, the membership overwhelmingly approved the funding plan, and final design tweaks are being sorted out now. This new building will truly be a great amenity to our already exceptional club. Many thanks to Jim Holland and his handy crew for the revitalization of the dinghy dock down by the swim beach. There were at times as many as a dozen folks cutting lumber, hauling wood and screwing down new decking boards to squeeze out a few more years of life from this float - all just in time for Sailing Camp. And speaking of Sailing Camp, I understand there may be a few slots still available. Check the website for available dates and times. It’s time to get back to the beach – the CSC Beach that is. Please join me in thanking Dan Clayton and his crew for their great work. They’ve just finished up our own version of beach front re-nourishment and it looks extremely inviting. Make your plans to come join the fun this Memorial Day weekend – lawn chairs, coolers, and tiny drink umbrellas are encouraged! At the time of writing this article, Caroline and I are looking forward to another one of Pat and Bill Freeman’s Grill Your Own Parties - Great food, Great friends, & Great atmosphere – what else does anyone need? And lastly (but not ‘leastly’), Rear Commodore Jan tells me the Elaine Parshal is planning a Sunfish Racing Clinic and will be sharing SOME of her secrets. The date is Saturday, June 4th starting at 9am. RSPVs are strongly urged.

A few more upcoming events and dates of note:• June 1st CSC Board meeting• June 2nd Thursday Evening Summer Dinghy Series begins• June 10th New Member Happy Hour

See you at the club.

The month of May began with the annual Past Commodore/Past President’s party. We could not have requested a more beautiful day for the weather and the company was wonderful. The evening began with visiting on the back porch and then we moved into the honoring of our Past Commodores and Past Presidents. I want to thank all of you who shared your culinary prowess and brought the most delicious hors d’hoeuvres to the party. The buffet table remained abuzz throughout the event…. a clear indication that everything was excellent. I also would like to thank all of you who volunteered the night before to help make it all happen including Dupre Young, Elizabeth Selkinghouse,

Marybeth Mahrer, Rebecca Dotterer and Diane Augsburger. The experience and elegance you all bring to the planning of this party helps to ensure its success every year. Kudos also to Margaret Clarkson and Kim Milling for the flower centerpieces. It was amazing to stand back and watch you masterfully create those beautiful arrangements. We also had the pleasure of having our USC sailors helping to orchestrate the food making its way to the table. Thank you to Kathryn Metts and Anna Lindley and to our very own Molly Roe. And finally I would like to applaud our Commodore, Andrew Clarkson and our “Mommadore,” Caroline for their impeccable planning and ensuring that all went perfectly. I believe you both made everyone feel so very welcome and it was a pleasure to work with you on this endeavor. Looking forward, I would like to remind everyone of our New Member’s Happy Hour coming up on June 10th. The party is being planned by Alecia Milling and Lee Bell and with these two lovely ladies at the helm we are sure to have a wonderful evening. I would also like to take this opportunity to invite any member, spouse or child 18 years or older of a member to join us in any auxiliary functions. We meet as a group every second Tuesday of the month and discuss the ways in which we can be supportive to CSC and to help encourage interest in all forms of sailing. We also have an opportunity to work with each other during regattas and in the planning of parties. I would highly recommend taking advantage of being a part of this group that is open to all. It is a great way to get to know your fellow members and their families and to truly feel a part of our great club. Please email me at [email protected] for more information.

The Vice Report The activity level of CSC has picked up with the Easter Regatta and the Gamecock Sailing Club Regatta occurring on back to back weekends. With the Summer Dinghy Races and Youth Camps just around the corner, we have a bustling club that can draw the interest of prospective new members and the community. Thanks to all of you who work so hard to make these events happen.

Membership Steve Orr has been accepted for Provisional Membership, and he was sponsored by Roger Dougal. Steve lives in Irmo and has been a crew member for Roger on his J24 for several years. Steve spent time sailing on Lake George in Indiana during his youth, and he plans to continue sailing and participate in the activities, racing, and camaraderie of CSC as a member of our club. John Gandolfo has submitted his application for Provisional membership, and he is sponsored by Reece Williams. John and his wife, Mary, live on the lake in Irmo and are the proud owners of a Beneteau 311. John and Mary are avid sailors, and they want to enjoy their pastime with their fellow sailors at CSC. The Board has approved Full membership for Charlie Brooks as he has successfully completed his Provisional year. Congratulations to Charlie on reaching this milestone. We are happy to have him as a club member. The Board also approved a proposal to provide incentives to our graduating Gamecock Sailing Club Team members to join our club as Junior members. We hope that some of these enthusiastic young sailors will become members and continue to enrich our club with their energy and spirit.

Education The PHRF ratings seminar led by Wayne Hale on April 9, was informative and much appreciated by the PHRF sailors in attendance. Many thanks to Wayne for his willingness to take on that hotly debated topic and subject himself to some good natured abuse. Elaine Parshall has volunteered to coach youth sailing sessions this summer after the Youth Sailing Camps are finished. We must keep these young people sailing after the camps end to maintain their interest in the sport. Thanks to Elaine for helping us do that. Keep an eye out for details on these sessions.See you at the club.

Someone once said, “When you are happy, time flies very fast!” Well I must be very happy, because time is flying way too fast! Can you believe it is almost summertime? Our first CSC Summer Dinghy Race is June 2nd. Please plan to come sail, eat, help with race committee or just watch and enjoy from our fabulous porch. I have placed a sign-up sheet on the door between the canteen and kitchen. If you are able, please sign up for meal prep for one of the 12 races (weather permitting) we plan to host. Mark Alexander has agreed to spearhead these races along with Johnny Dotterer’s skillful help. Please mark your calendars for Thursday evenings this summer and plan to come enjoy good food, fellowship and fun! Elaine Parshall will be teaching a Sunfish Racing Clinic on June 4th. Most everyone knows what a talented sailor Elaine is. This is a great opportunity to brush up on your racing skills. The clinic will start at 9:00am with Chalk Talk and finish with a “Bring Your Own Lunch” and debrief from noon – 1:00pm. It is also a BYOB event – that is “Bring Your Own Boat”! In March and April, Columbia Sailing Club hosted some extraordinary sailing events! From the Easter Regatta to the first USC Gamecock Invitational, the sport of sailing was alive and well at CSC! The 50th Annual Easter Regatta was fantastic! Kudos to Charles Bumgardner and his energetic team, Dick Dommel and his excellent RC team, and the amazing Kim Milling and her team for putting on a first class regatta! Charles did a great job organizing the regatta. We had 3 classes of boats, J 24, J 70 and Ultimate 20. First place in the J 24 class belonged to Daniel Borrer and his remarkable crew. Our own Elaine Parshall and her talented crew got the #1 spot in the J 70’s and Teresa Decker won in the Ultimate 20’s. We received excellent media coverage from local TV stations. Capital City Lake Murray Country, a large sponsor of the ER, had a professional media team shoot a commercial for tourism which will air statewide soon. With lots of fun activities, including the Dueling Pianos, a good time was had by all! According to Scuttlebut Sailing News there has been a rise of college sailing teams who are bringing a whole new attitude to the sailing scene. The Gamecock Sailing Club is no exception. They hosted the first Gamecock Sailing Invitational Saturday, April 2nd at CSC. With steady winds all day, it was a perfect day for racing. NC State, University of Georgia, University of North Carolina/Wilmington, University of Tennessee and University of South Carolina all participated in this South Atlantic Interscholastic Sailing Association race. Coach David Van Cleef had prepared the Gamecocks well. They won the round robin sailing event! Southern hospitality was abundant at CSC! Breakfast and lunch were provided by donations from CSCA members. Many of the sailors claimed this was one of the best intercollegiate events they have attended. That same day, LMYRA racing was happening. With all the recent sailing activity and excitement, CSC is definitely accomplishing our mission to promote interest in sailing!
