Welcome to the middle country community ..

On behalf of the Greater Middle Country Chamber of Commerce and its Board of Directors, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the vibrant Middle Country business community.

Our Chamber is primarily made of local, entrepreneurial small business owners that are the engine of this great country’s economy. They work together tire-lessly to not only grow their business but are also committed to the well being of the community as a whole. Our Chamber gets involved in local issues as well as contributes ideas and support to the business community at large.

The Greater Middle Country Chamber of Commerce, originating in Centereach, has grown to also include the towns of Coram, Lake Grove, and Selden. Please take some time to look through these pages. I believe that you will be pleased with the variety of businesses within our community as well as the quality of the services provided. Many of our businesses are small enough to treat you as the

important client that you are and yet large enough to service you properly and efficiently. That is the true value of a great small business.

Our Chamber meets monthly at our nationally renown Middle Country Public Library. For more infor-mation about our meetings, our members and their businesses, or our work in the community, please check out our website at: www.middlecountrychamber.com.

i rescued a human todaywritten by Janine allen

submitted by irene rabinowitz, owner of Barks-n-Bubbles Boutique in centereach

i rescued a human today.her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering

apprehensively into the kennels.i felt her need instantly and knew i had to help her. i wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid.

as she stopped at my kennel i blocked her view from a little accident i had in the back of my cage.

i didn’t want her to know that i hadn’t been walked today. sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy

and i didn’t want her to think poorly of them. as she read my kennel card i hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. i only have the future to look forward to and want to make

a difference in someone’s life. she got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me.

i shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her.Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship.

a tear fell down her cheek and i raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that i instantly jumped into her arms.

i would promise to keep her safe. i would promise to always be by her side.i would promise to do everything i could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

i was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. so many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors.

so many more to be saved. at least i could save one. i rescued a human today.

If you’ve never been to Staller center for the Arts at Stony Brook University, consider putting it on your list of things to do. there’s entertainment for families, for date nights, for opera lovers, movie buffs, and even an art gallery to stroll through.

for families with children, the “Not just for kids” series offers live performances and ticket prices that can’t be beat, at only $12. Acrobats, storytellers, puppeteers and other delightful entertainers are in the mix. It’s a great introduction for children as they share the anticipation and then the fun of a live show.

to see and hear artists who are regular performers in New york city and around the world, you only have to go as far as Staller center. As quartet-in-residence in the Department of Music, the world-renowned emerson String Quartet, plays unforgettable concerts three times a year in the Staller center recital hall.

jazz is always in the line-up, and this season starts with top jazz players in the group SfjAZZ collective, performing the works of horace Silver. following that, a nightclub cabaret with clarinetist/saxophonist ken peplowski brings back the golden age of clubs, when comedians and singers were all part of the act. the yellowjackets, a multi-Grammy winning jazz quartet, play Stony Brook after playing Milan, Italy and San francisco. And a “piano jazz Summit” with three generations of solo virtuoso jazz players, cedar Walton, jacky terrasson and hiromi, brings keyboard marvels to the recital hall.

katharine Mcphee, a singer-songwriter-actress who attracted fans as a singing sensation on American Idol (Season five) appears at Staller center in November, performing her personal favorites and a mix from her album Unbroken.

MOMIX, dancers of grace and imagination, brings a spectacular dance creation, “Botanica,” to Staller center. this entertaining show follows the rhythms of the seasons, the evolution of the world, and the passing of a day, with costumes, props and music that will sweep you away.

cirque éloize, a stunningly creative circus troupe that combines circus arts with break dancing, hip-hop and theatre will present a ground-breaking, urban flavored work called iD. It’s a show for the whole family. rock music and video are woven in to this contemporary, playful circus show.

Spring Awakening, the tony Award winning Broadway rock musical set in 19th century Germany, comes to Staller center for one night on its national tour. Spring Awakening is an unforgettable show for mature audiences with hard-hitting themes about young love and parental repression that is called “brave, haunting, and electrifying.”the last show of the season treats audiences to the russian National Ballet theatre. the stage will be filled with outstanding dancers who perform in the romantic ballets “chopini-ana” and “romeo & juliet.”

Other opportunities for music lovers include The Metropolitan Opera HD Live at Staller Center. All the excitement of a live Metropolitan Opera comes to the big screen in Staller center’s Main Stage theatre, in high definition with Dolby Digital surround sound.

the Met: Live in hD Series includes twelve live transmissions this season.

Visit the UNIVERSITY ART GALLERY

the exquisite space of the University Art Gallery in Staller center perfectly showcases the work of professional artists as well as students and faculty. Admission is free. Along with a faculty exhibition, an MfA thesis exhibition and the annual Senior Show is a photography exhibit: fredric roberts, “Images of India,” from November 10 - December 11, 2010.

Gallery hours are tuesday-friday 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm; Saturday 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. When exhibitions are in progress, the Gallery is open one hour before Staller center performances and during intermission.

fILMS fOr cAMpUS AND cOMMUNItyWant to see films out of the ordinary? On friday evenings during the school year Staller center screens movies for campus and community. Award-winning foreign and independent films as well as films that may have had a limited theatrical release are on the schedule, such as “Winter’s Bone,” winner of Best picture, jury Award, Sundance film festival, and “Get Low,” a Depression-era folktale featuring robert Duvall. THE BARIATRIC SURGERY PROGRAM AT MATHER HOSPITAL

Arif Ahmad, MD, Director of Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence

matherhospital.org/bariatrics75 N. Country Rd, Port Jeff, NY 11777

Mather’s Fortunato Breast Center Earns Distinguished Certification

the National Accreditation program for Breast centers (NApBc) has granted Mather hospital’s fortunato Breast health center (fBhc) a three-year, full accreditation designation. this recognition by the NApBc is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.

the fBhc is one of only seven centers in New york State and only one of three on Long Island to have earned this prestigious distinction.

“We are pleased our commitment to providing our patients with exceptional care has been recognized,” says Dr. Michelle price, co-medical director of the fortunato Breast center. “It matters where you choose to have your mammogram. Isn’t it reassuring to know that a center is experienced and competent to handle your breast health needs?”

NApBc, a program administered by the American college of Surgeons, is a consortium of national organizations dedicated to high quality care and the monitoring of outcomes for patients. the group evaluates breast centers, in more than 40 categories, to confirm that the most efficient and contemporary care is being provided.

During the survey process, the center must demonstrate compliance with standards established by the NApBc for treating women who are diagnosed with the full spectrum of breast disease. Areas assessed include center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement.

receiving care at an NApBc-accredited center signifies that a patient will have access to:comprehensive care, including a full range of state-of-the-art services;•a multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options;•information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options; and•most importantly, quality breast care close to home.•

providing services to the Long Island community for more than 15 years, the fBhc performed 14,000 mammograms and diagnostic procedures in 2009. fBhc is also accredited by the American college of radiology. Most insurance plans are accepted. for more information on the fortunato health center, call 631-476-2771 or visit www.matherhospital.org/breasthealth.

You don’t need more caffeine. You need more

sleep.

Experts in healing. Specialists in caring.

SLEEP DISORDERS CENTER

Mather Hospital’s Sleep Disorders Center can help you kick the caffeine habit and get the rest you need to face the day. Our certifi ed sleep technicians identify the disorders — such as sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome — that may be keeping you from getting the rest you need.

Call the Sleep Disorders Center at Mather Hospital for more information at (631) 476-2721.

When it Comes to Your Health, Sleep MattersIt’s not just a bedtime story: you really do need a good night’s sleep.

research shows that lack of quality sleep, which is reported by more than 70 million Americans, has a negative impact on just about everyone. poor sleep has been linked to medical challenges such as increased risk of diabetes, obesity, heart problems and depression. Some adults who repeatedly sleep less than six hours a night have been found to perform at the same level as those impaired by alcohol and drugs.

“the key to a good night’s rest is finding out what‘s keeping you from falling or staying asleep and treating or manag-ing that cause,” said Dr. peter Ottavio of the Sleep Disorder center at john t. Mather Memorial hospital. “Undergoing a medical evaluation can identify what has been impacting your sleep and help improve not only your health, but also your quality of life.”

there are 84 known sleep disorders. three of the most widely known are:Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA): Defined as pauses in breathing during sleep, OSA sufferers can stop breathing from 10 seconds up to a full minute and a half. It can deprive

the body of the oxygen it needs. the brain, in its instinct to survive, jostles the body into waking, if not completely, enough to take a breath. that pattern repeats through the sleep period.

restless leg syndrome (rLS): A movement disorder, rLS is an intense urge to move the legs at bedtime and a constant need to stretch or move, which prevents sufferers from falling or staying asleep.

Narcolepsy: Defined by constant sleeplessness and a tendency to sleep at inappropriate times, narcolepsy affects approximately one in 2,000 people. If not identified and managed, narcolepsy poses serious difficulty for sufferers.

those who suffer with such sleep disturbances should be evaluated by a certified physician. Mather’s Sleep Disorders center is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine for meeting nationally recognized standards of excellence in healthcare, education and research. the physicians on staff are sleep medicine certified.

“As a hospital-based program, we can better handle emergencies that might arise,” said Dr. Mohamed Sameen, Director of the Sleep Disorders center. “Our staff is dual-certified in both respiratory therapy and sleep and we have the current technology and state-of-the-art equipment.”

At the center, overnight polysomnograms can diagnose the causes of sleep disruption. Most insurance plans cover sleep studies when prescribed by a primary care physician. Studies can also be done during the day for those patients who work nights. for more information about the Sleep Disorders center, call 631-476-2888 or visit www.matherhospital.org.
