Before I return to school

Wake up with a smile – this is a new chapter for us all

Get dressed in fresh clean clothes every day. This needs to be something that you can do PE in. For this transition period of time you will not need to wear school uniform. Have a good hearty breakfast/lunch to set you up to learn. Remember to wash your face and hands.

We are discouraging pupils from bringing any personal items to school, therefore you will not need a bag. If you suffer from hay fever, take your medication before you come to school. If you are asthmatic, please bring your inhaler. All you will need to bring is a full labelled water bottle.

Remember, if you are displaying any symptoms of Covid-19; you are coughing, have a high temperature or any shortness of breath, DO NOT come to school. Tell your parents you must stay at home and get tested if you are able. Remember to use the toilet before you leave the house.

Travelling to school.

If you use public transport follow the guidance from TFL. If you are walking to school with another family or a friend, ensure you are socially distanced. Walking or cycling is always best!

When I get to school

As usual, you will be no doubt greeted at your allocated entry point by a smiling member of SLT, who will be delighted to see you. You will arrive during your staggered arrival time and make your way straight into your year 6/year 5 classroom where you will wash your hands and find your new work station. This will

remain yours for as long as necessary. There will be a pen/pencil, paper and a ruler waiting for your use so you will not need to bring any personal belongings or a bag; just your named water bottle which you will take home each day to wash and refill for the next school day.

What my learning will look like

When you return to school, you will have the opportunity to talk about how you have been feeling. There will be maths, an English lessons and a PE activity, at the end or start of your session.

When you are learning the teacher may do a lot of their teaching from their desk, front of the classroom or possibly alongside you. The amount of talking with each other and adults will be reduced significantly, this is because of how the virus can be transmitted. While interaction will be kept to a minimum, the planned curriculum will provide opportunities for you to catch up on learning lost but also provide opportunities for you to discuss and ask questions regarding any concerns you have.

Your classroom may also look a little different. It may not be your actual classroom, the tables may be more spread out and there will be fewer children in the room. This is to help to keep you safe.

If for a particular reason you are moving around the building we implemented the three T’s.

Regular breaks will be found for you to wash your hands between each session. Remember to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds (following guidance).

Try not to touch your face and to implement the ‘catch it, bin it, kill it’ approach.

Most importantly, stay positive and stay safe. We look forward to seeing you all soon.

Questions you may have:

Am I the only one feeling anxious about this situation?

In a situation like this it is normal to feel sad, worried, confused, scared or angry. Know that you are not alone and talk to someone you trust, like your parent or teacher or school adult. Ask questions to improve your knowledge of the situation and get information from reliable sources.

Will I have my teacher?

There may be the possibility that you will not have your class teacher but if you really want to see them or speak with them, let an adult know. You will have a PE coach teaching you PE for 45 minutes a day as a MJS teacher.

Why am I only doing half a day?

Keeping you and the adults in the school safe is our highest priority. We know the best place for you to learn is at school for your well-being, socially interacting with others. Half days initially will minimise risks.

Do I have to wear a face covering in school?

You will not be expected to wear a face covering. Face coverings are believed to help prevent you spreading the virus rather than prevent you from contracting it. The school will not provide pupils with a face covering unless they show symptoms in which case they will be asked to be collected from school.

Should I wipe down my chair, equipment and desk area?

A cleaner will be on site, you will not be expected to clean your areas

What if someone near me coughs or sneezes?

Because a pupil coughs or sneezes, it does not mean they have the virus. Don’t tease anyone about being sick; remember that the virus doesn’t follow geographical boundaries, ethnicities, age or ability or gender; anyone can catch the virus. Encourage them to follow good practice safely and alert an adult if they are not. Pupils displaying symptoms will be sent home to be tested.

What if I have concerns and I don’t know who to talk to?

Rest assured if none of your named 5 adults are onsite, the opportunity for you to speak with a member of staff you are comfortable with can be arranged.
