please call (773) 727-5241. Selected Laws for Passover 5773

Preparing for Passover is always difficult. I will attempt tobriefly cover 6 areas but urge you to either review the lawsfrom the original source materials, attend any of the manyclasses being offered by competent rabbinic authorities, including at Kesser Maariv, or call me with any questions.1) We Search for Chametz on Sunday night, March 24after sundown. We follow all of the procedures andcustoms including reciting the blessing as well as KolChamira (renunciation of ownership) upon conclusion ofthe search;2) The Fast of the First Born is on Monday morning March25. Fathers fast for their first born son under Bar Mitzvah. A Siyum can be attended if fasting is difficult. Our shulwill hold a siyum on Friday morning after our 6:00 amminyan;3) We Burn Chametz on Monday morning March 25. Burning of the Chametz will be available that day, from8:00 am until 11:30 am, at 8255 Central Park in Skokie(ICJA property), enter from Oakton or Main St. Weperform Bitul Chametz and recite the Kol Chamira at thistime;4) The Prohibition of Eating Chametz begins at 10:29 amon Friday morning March 25;5) The Seder - We cannot begin the seder until afternightfall. In each and every generation me must feel as ifwe are re-experiencing the exodus from Egypt. Accordingly, we must delve into the Haggadah toremember the suffering of our ancestors and to learn of thegreatness of Hashem. We must involve our children in thisprocess and realize that each part of the Passover Seder hasgreat meaning and significance. In addition to reciting theHagaddah, special mitzvot of the night include drinkingfour cups of wine or grape juice, eating Matza, and eatingMaror. We must eat the Afikomen by 12:52 am bothnights;6) Second Seder - We cannot begin to make preparationsor begin the second seder until after candle lighting onTuesday evening March 26, which is not before 7:52 pm.

Please call me at home (847) 676-0556 or at thesynagogue (847) 679-9800 if you have any questions aboutthese or other issues, including how to “kasher” appliancesand utensils for Pesach (Contact the office for a copy of Rabbi Ben Zion’s shiur from last year on this topic). AChag Kasher V'samayach, and on this Pesach, may wemerit the ultimate redemption.

Brief Laws of Kashering Your Kitchen for Pesachby Rabbi Ben Zion LazovskyKashering your kitchen for Pesach is never easy. Beloware some main points on Kashering. Please ask any RabbiLazovsky for more details or even to see if your situationdiffers from what is listed below. We are always happy tohelp people understand what they need to do to Kashertheir kitchen.Ovens: Run a self clean with the oven racks inside. If it isnot self-clean it is Kasherable, but ask me for instructions.Rangetops Gas: Burners should be on for one hour withthe grates in their normal position. The grates must also becovered with foil. Electric ranges need to be red-hot for atleast 45 minutes. Often you must but a brick on the burnerfor it to turn red-hot.Dishwashers: Most dishwashers may not be kashered forPesach.Sinks: Stainless steel sinks may be kashered with hagala(pouring scalding water on them). Sinks must be clean andwith no rust spots. Boil water in a container until there isa rolling boil, and carefully pour the water on all parts ofthe sink. Cast-iron sinks cannot be kashered. Pour boilingwater on the as described above, but you must cover thesurfaces. One possibility is to buy a dishpan that pits inyour sink and drill a hole in it to drain (but be careful thesink should not back up into the dishpan).Silverware: Can be kashered if they are rust free withHagala. You can drop them into a pot of boiling water oneat a time, or go to the cRc Pesach Fair (see above).Pots: Pots that are usually used for cooking liquids may bekashered by Hagala, provided they are clean and have nocrevices. For details, see one of the Rabbis Lazovsky, orbring it to the cRc Pesach Fair. Frying pans and roastingpans cannot be kashered. Dishes: Cannot be kashered.Countertops: The cRc Passover Guide has an extensivelist of countertop materials and if they may be kashered. Even if your contertop cannot be kashered, clean it welland cover it – some people cover it with boards, and someuse Contact paper with light adhesive or aluminum foil. Whatever you use, cover it well so that food will not touchthe countertop.Refrigerators: Must be thoroughly cleaned with soapywater.Small appliances like coffee makers, blenders and foodprocessors cannot be kashered for Pesach. For any other items, please ask me - [email protected].

DVAR TORAHShabbat Hagodol - March 23 is Shabbat Hagodol. Italways takes place the Shabbat before Passover. ThisShabbat discusses the maturity of the Jewish people in theirslaughtering the primary Egyptian deity which led to theirdeliverance. The Omer, or period of counting 49 days between Passover

and Shavuot, is a solemn period when twenty four thousandstudents of Rabbi Akiva, all rabbis and leaders of Israel, passed away. We being counting (“Sfira”) the night ofMarch 26. One should count after sunset. If one forgot tocount at night, count the next day without reciting theblessing. If one forgot the entire day, the blessing may notbe recited for the rest of the Omer, even if one counts at

Page 4: Passover 2013

night. During this time we refrain from celebratingweddings, having haircuts, purchasing new clothing andhearing live music. On the 33rd day of the counting, known as Lag B’Omer, this year corresponding to Sunday,April 28, the students did not die. As a result, it is a day ofjoy and celebration. Marriages, which are ordinarily

prohibited during the sefira period, are permitted on LagB’Omer, and field trips and outings take place. In Israel, the day is marked by the bonfires and pilgrimages are madeto the grave of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, whose Yahrzeitis on Lag B’Omer. Shavuot begins on Tuesday eveningMay 14 and ends on Thursday evening May 16.
