Numerical Analysis – Model Validation
• Validated building model of Design Builder used for parametric thermal analysis of alternative operation scenarios
• 3D CFD flow solver of Design Builder was employed (FVM). Equation set comprises of the 3 velocity component momentum equations, the Navier-Stokes equations, the energy equation using the k-ε turbulence model
Numerical Analysis – Night Ventilation - PPD
• With the exploitation of natural ventilation an average PPD index of 16% is achieved while significantly higher percentage of dissatisfaction was retrieved with continuous operation of the HVAC system during night hours (i.e. 35%). This is quite interesting, underlining the significance of natural ventilation.
Numerical Analysis – Night Ventilation – Air Velocity
• Air Velocity ranging between 0.06 – 0.12 m/s (within comfort levels)
Energy consumption
• Total energy consumption from 23.12.2014 until 24.11.2015 was 3443 kwh
• Primary energy 63 kwh/m2/a
• Cooling and heating energy consumption was 380 kwh
• 7 kwh/m2/a primary energy for cooling and heating ( calculated 15kwh/m2/a )
• 3 KW PV Panel in Cyprus can produce around 5000 kwh/a
Conclusion
- Net positive energy buildings in Cyprus are possible
- Needs special attentions for shading
- Small cooling load – difficult to design the cooling system
