Program

The Boniface Music Series magnifies the glory of God by bringing to the

community the best and brightest performers each season.

Since 2000, twenty-two-year-old pianist Mackenzie Melemed has

performed over 600 concerts for audiences around the world. Melemed

recently graduated with his Bachelor of Music, and will be completing his

Master of Music degree this year as part of the accelerated B.M./M.M. degree

at The Juilliard School. Melemed studies with Robert McDonald.

His first contact with the piano was at the age of four and he quickly

developed a passion for music. He began performing local concerts for

senior citizens, charitable organizations and at local schools, where he

encouraged students to share their talents within their communities. At the

age of eight, Melemed portrayed the young Mozart in the Discovery Channel

series “Medical Mystery.” In 2004, Melemed performed for President George Bush at a fundraiser

in Boston, and subsequently was invited to perform for five years at The White House. In the

summer of 2004, Melemed gave sixty appearances at the Tropicana Resort in Atlantic City in the

show “Prodigy.”

Mr. Melemed began formal classical training in 2005, and won the grand prize at the Bradshaw

and Buono International Piano Competition, resulting in a debut performance at Weill Recital

Hall, only a year later. Melemed was the only child to be named an “Everyday Hero” by Anna

Maria College in Massachusetts. Melemed is a past recipient of the ASCAP Irving Berlin Summer

Camp Scholarship, and performed at the awards ceremony at Lincoln Center. Melemed has

appeared twice on the PBS television/radio program “From the Top." In 2009, Melemed gave his

orchestral debut with The Boston Civic Symphony.

Melemed just won the First Prize and Chamber Music Prize at the 4th Maj Lind International

Piano Competition in Helsinki, Finland. He was one of 37 pianists, selected from 195 applicants,

and the only competitor from the United States to perform in the finals. In addition to the

combined €38,000 prize, Melemed will be featured in a solo recital at the PianoEspoo Festival in

November. Melemed will also premiere a piano concerto in October, 2018 in Finland.

Linda M. Bento-Rei has performed as principal flutist with the Venice

Symphony since 2015. Since moving to Osprey in 2014, she has also performed

with The Bach Ensemble, the Fifth Avenue Chamber Orchestra and the

Gulfshore Opera of Naples, FL. In addition to her orchestral performances, she

and her husband co-founded a local non-profit chamber music organization,

Sarasota Musica Viva in which Bento-Rei serves as Artistic Director and

performer. Since 2015, she has organized and presented over thirty chamber

music programs throughout the west coast of Florida and New England featuring nationally

acclaimed local and guest musicians.

Bento-Rei received a Bachelor of Music, cum laude from the Boston Conservatory of Music and a

Master of Music in Performance as a Merit Scholar from the New England Conservatory of Music.

Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols

Adam De Sorgo is the Principal Oboist of the Sarasota Orchestra and the Utah Festival Opera. He was recently the Associate Principal Oboe of the Kansas City Symphony from 2015-2017 and a guest Principal Oboist with the Utah Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, and the Baltimore Symphony. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Adam holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music where he was a

student of John Mack. He was a fellow at the New World Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas for three seasons. In addition to playing the oboe, Adam has worked extensively as a pianist and accompanist. He was the staff accompanist for the Canton Symphony and Cleveland State University choruses and has performed as a collaborative pianist on many occasions. He currently is a member of Cortango, a St. Louis based tango “Orquesta.”

Alexander W. Ravitz is a clarinetist, bass clarinetist, conductor, educator, and improviser in Tampa, FL. As an active freelance musician, Alex has performed with groups including The Naples Philharmonic, Opera Naples, The Orlando Philharmonic, The Charlotte Symphony (Port Charlotte, FL) and The Sarasota Opera. He is currently Principal Clarinet with the Venice Symphony (Venice, FL). Alex is also an avid classical improviser, working with groups such as The Jamison Williams Trio, The Sean Hamilton Collective, Thomas Milovac's Unit Colossus, and CRUX.

Alexander currently holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Clarinet Performance from the University of Louisville, a Master of Music degree in Clarinet Performance and Instrumental Conducting from the University of South Florida. Alex also teaches a private studio of collegiate, high school, and middle school students from Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. Alex's students regularly are accepted to All-state and All-county bands, as well as, being accepted to prestigious music schools across the country. As a soloist, Alex has been a guest recitalist at festivals in Tampa and Jacksonville FL as well as Louisville, KY. As a contemporary collaborator, he has worked on many projects with Visual Artists, and Dancer companies including Rouge Dance and COBY Dance. As an advocate for new music, Alex has regularly appeared in performances ranging from solo clarinet and chamber recitals performing in new-music concerts featuring the music of composers such as Vera Ivanova, James Ogburn, David Liptak, Wendy Wan-ki Lee, Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon, and Joseph Halmann. Alex is regularly involved in new commissioning projects as well. Alex’s primary clarinet teachers have included: Calvin Falwell, Dallas Tidwell, and Scott Ellington. He also studied conducting with Dr. William Wiedrich, and jazz studies with Dan Miller.

Fernando Traba, bassoon A native of Mexico City, Mexico, Mr. Traba received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music and also did postgraduate work at The Juilliard School. He has served as principal bassoon with all five major orchestras in Mexico City, as well as the Orquesta del Principado de Asturias in Oviedo, Spain and the National Opera Orchestra in Lisbon, Portugal. Since 1992 he has served as the Principal Bassoonist of the Sarasota Orchestra where he has been featured regularly as a soloist. Mr. Traba is Bassoon Instructor at

Florida Southern College in Lakeland as well as the State College of Florida in the Sarasota-Bradenton area. He also has edited and provided the Spanish language translation for the 2nd edition of “Bassoon Reed Making: Basic Technique” by Christopher Weait.

A native of Chicago IL, Josh Cote is an experienced orchestral, chamber, and solo performer. Josh joined the Sarasota Orchestra in 2017 as Fourth Horn and has also performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra and New World Symphony. Josh received his undergraduate degree from Southern Methodist University in 2012, where he studied with Greg Hustis, former principal horn of the Dallas Symphony. He received a Performance Studies Certificate

degree in Horn Performance from The Colburn School in 2015, where he studied with Andrew Bain, principal horn of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Josh spend the next two years as one of the New World Symphony’s horn fellows. Josh has been awarded fellowships to the Tanglewood Music Center, Festival Mozaic, Pacific Music Festival, Spoleto Music Festival, Music Academy of the West, National Repertory Orchestra, and National Orchestral Institute.
