Passing On The Art Form

Living on the slopes of the dormant Imbabura volcano, German began learning to weave at age 12 from the elders of his community. It took more than a year to learn the techniques, but with time and practice, German could produce designs from memory. When he married his wife, Zoila, he taught her the art of weaving. They now create beautiful tapestries (pg 4) and other textile goods together. Since there are not many weavers in their area anymore, they wish to pass this art on to their children.

Time-tested Process

Women of the Chachi and Epera indigenous tribes have been harvesting and weaving paja toquilla (pa-hah toe-key-yuh) from the Carludovica palmata plant for centuries in the forested areas of the coast of Ecuador. The process to prepare the fiber for weaving begins by cutting and stripping the outer layer from mature stems. They are dried for about six days and then dyed with natural colors made from crushed leaves or roots. Boiling the fibers with the dye for two hours ensures that all the fibers are completely penetrated to the desired hue. Then they are washed, rinsed, and dried again - finally ready to weave into baskets and other goods (pg 7). From straw to basket, the entire process takes about 12 days.

Carving Out An Environmental Impact

While working in a button factory, Jorge met people who knew how to carve animal figurines from tagua nuts and they encouraged him to try. He had a talent for it and began his own workshop. Jorge is grateful to have a skill that not only helps protect the environment but is valued by people all around the world. He is happy to see his oldest son learn his trade. Jorge relates, “Thirty years ago in the jungles of Ecuador, they cut down the tagua palms and other trees, causing too much deforestation. At that time, tagua wasn’t appreciated very much. Now, when customers buy tagua carvings (pg 26-33), they are helping an artisan like me to live, and also helping to conserve the forests of Ecuador and helping the planet, too.”
