The funding is incredibly valuable and will greatly assist young people by giving them access to a variety of different meals, providing nutritional information and for giving young people the opportunity to learn food preparation and cooking skills as part of a healthier lifestyle.
•Thank you to the Vinnies Retail Centres, a SpecialWorkoftheStVincentdePaulSocietyforsupportingPassages Northbridge and Peel with items of clothing.
Creating New DestiniesPassages Northbridge staff recently helped a young man prepare for a Special Tertiary Admission Test so he could study at university. He was accepted into a Criminology DegreeatMurdochUniversityinAugust.
Until recently, this young man had been involved in gang culture, suffered all the effects of alcohol and drug abuse, been in and out of prison and was stuck in the negative patterns that were set out for him through family history and social placement.
Over the last six to eight months, this young man has worked towards taking control of this pattern. With great personal determination, a lot of persistence and strong support from the Passages team he has made huge strides toward creating his new destiny.
The same young man has also benefitted from funds made available from theVinnies CEOSleepout for educationand training, as well as the day to day services provided by Passages Resource Centre.

Street Law Centre WA providing legal advice to young peopleThe Street Law Centre WA began its free legal advice clinic at Passages Northbridge in early 2012 thanks to collaboration with Allen’s Linklaters. This arrangementinvolves Allens law firm providing a volunteer to the clinic each week.
Due to the transient nature of the client group, the aim is to provide “on-the–spot” legal advice where possible. Street Law currently attends Passages on Wednesday to assist young people with a range of areas including housing, debts, bankruptcy, family law – access to children, minor criminal law, guardianship and administration and fines.

•Therewere41,390peoplelivingininappropriatehousingin2011comparedto31,531in2006.
•Mostofthehomelessyouthaged12-18yearsin2011werein ‘severely’ crowded dwellings (56%) or in supportedaccommodation for the homeless (28%). While 8% ofhomeless people aged 12-18 years were staying temporarily
withotherhouseholds,thisproportionincreasesto14%foryouthaged19-24years.
•GuidedbyitsHomelessnessStatisticsReferenceGroup,the ABS is continuing to undertake research and development to improve the estimation of homelessness, including youth homelessness.
TheStVincentdePaulSocietyandRotaryClubofPerthare disappointed to see an increase in homelessness and will continue to work towards raising awareness of this serious issue and provide support through services such as Passages Resource Centre.

CityofMandurahin Partnership with Passages PeelPassages Resource Centre Peel has received partnership fundingfromtheCityofMandurahforthenextthreeyears.Passages would like to acknowledge the support of the CityofMandurah.Thepartnershipisagreatopportunityto work together and make a positive difference to the lives of young people in the area.
Passages Northbridge hosted its first ‘Passages Network Quarterly’ to correspondwithMentalHealthWeekandthe key topic, Connect. It is hoped this event will be repeated at Passages on a quarterly basis involving many of the services that work out of Passages each week. Those attending the inaugural meeting included Ruah Community Services, Perth Inner City Youth Service, StreetConnect,FoyerProject,StarfishConsulting,CreateFoundation,Youthlink,DAYS,SaveaMate,YouthFuturesWA, Street Law and Allens Linklaters.

Passages Networking Event
The Great MoscowCircusOnWednesday 31 October 2012, The GreatMoscowCircus Charity Night was held at Hall Park in Mandurah.Proceedsraisedonthenightweredividedamongst four charities with the Passages Resource Centre in Peel receiving almost $5,000 to supportessential services for street present young people.
Passages also participated in collections at other shows in November with the proceeds going towards this vital work.
A heartfelt thank you to the Peach team and employees at Alcoa for choosing to support Passages Peel with cafe blinds and outdoor furniture to make the outdoor area sound and weather proof all year around.
Alcoa offer a green thumb for PassagesAlcoa staff recently volunteered their time at Passages Peel to work in the garden beds, plant fruit trees, a vegetable and herb garden, put up large sail out the back and clean down the pavers. Thank you Alcoa, your support in making the garden a welcoming place for the young people who visit the centre is greatly appreciated.

‘Home is wheremyheartis...’Young people from Passages Northbridge and Peel contributed to the 2012 YACWA exhibition of ‘Home is where my heart is.....’ This program has been highlysuccessful for a number of years in engaging young people on the topic of what home means to them and supporting them to present this in photographic form. The exhibition this year featured some very moving illustrations and heart-warming descriptions of places thatwereatsomepointsoclosetothecontributor’sheart.
Homeless Connect 2012 Passages Northbridge participated in the Homeless Connect eventatRussellSquareonWednesday14November.Thisone-stop-shop for homelessness was a great success. Passages staff organised a stall, assisted by some of the young people who use the service regularly. These young people acted as leaders on the day and helped to promote Passages to other young people visiting the stall, giving their perspective as to why Passages is so important to youth with a lived experience of homelessness between 12and25years.
MotivationthroughMovies Passages is looking for one or more benefactors who can provide movie tickets that can be used as motivation for young people who are working hard towards making positive changes in their lives. Chairman’sReportIt is with pleasure that I welcome you to the December edition of the Passages Resource Centre newsletter. This past year has been filled with a number of successes and opportunities for everyone involved with Northbridge and Peel. Almost 12 months after the opening of Passages Peel and the service is already proving to be a vital lifeline in the region. And Passages Northbridge continues to be busy, working alongside numerous agencies and engaging with a number of programs to provide integral support to disadvantaged young people.
I hope you enjoy reading this edition of the Passagesnewsletter which features many stories and achievements from both centres such as the 2012 Passages Race Day, participation in Homeless Person’s and Mental HealthWeeks and the support of a particular young person who has now gone on to study criminology at university.
You will have seen a lot in the press recently about mental health services and the lack of services for youth. I agree entirelyandendorsethelettersthatKeithWilsonwritesto the West Australian, and recall he was saying the same things when advising our initial committee in 1998.
Without the generosity and commitment of all the staff, committee members, donors and supporters of Passages Resource Centre, this vital work would not be possible, so on behalf of all the young people who have been assisted by Passages, thank you.

Hats, Fascinators, Fillies and FunHats, Fascinators and Fillies created a lively, fun filled and colourful theme for the 2012 Passages Race Day on Saturday19MayatBelmontParkRacecourse.Thisyear’seventraisedover$72,000tosupporttheworkofPassagesResource Centre in Northbridge. Nick Way from Channel 10 generously donatedhis time toMC the event for thefourth year running.
Fundsraisedatthisyear’sRaceDaywillassistthecentreto provide support, advocacy, referrals and services such as kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities and phone and computer access to homeless and street present young peoplebetween12and25yearsofage.

In September, Niall Rhatigan, Manager of Passages Northbridge attended the 7th National Homelessness Conference, organised by Homelessness Australia.
There were a variety of passionate speakers on key topics in Homelessness and some of the highlights included Housing First (National Alliance to End HomelessnessintheUS), theFoyerModel(AnglicareandTheLadderProgram),Peopleexperiencinghomelessnessand‘on-the-spot’fines:it’snotfine!(DeakinUniversitySchoolofLaw)andlastlyMarkMcGreevy,CEOofDEPAULInternational,workshopsontheimportanceofa‘ValuesLed’approachwithin organisations, and secondly on the ‘Top 10 Issues FacingHomelessnessAgenciesToday’.
The Conference was a great opportunity to focus on what can be achieved in particular through collaboration with other service providers.
Perth Registry WeekPassages Northbridge staff participated in the inaugural Perth Registry Week during early August 2012. Registry Week was organised by Ruah Community Services to assesstheneedsof‘RoughSleeping’homelesspeoplein theCitiesofPerthandVincent.
A snapshot of homelessness in Perth was carried out using anassessmenttoolcalledthe‘VulnerabilityIndex’.Volunteersfor the week were trained in delivering this assessment in a sensitivebutaccuratemanneroverthreenights,14,15and16Augustbetween3amand7am.
Assessments were also carried out at many homeless services during the day including Passages. Results were correlated andpresentedattheendoftheweekbyMicahProjectsandRuah Community Services. The main aim of Perth Registry Week was to find those who are most at risk in these areas and attempt to address their needs with appropriate services.
The Vulnerability Index will continually be updated byservices working with those who are homeless. It is hoped that service partnerships developed during this week will find some positive outcomes for those surveyed.
Some of the most interesting findings were as follows:

Blue Illusion Charity Fashion EventBlue Illusion held a Charity Fashion Event on Saturday 24November,with 20%of proceedsgoing toPassagesResource Centre to raise vital awareness of the service and youth homelessness. Between 11am-2pm on the day customers at the Booragoon, Claremont, Cottesloe, Karrinyup,SubiacoandWhitfordsboutiqueswereabletoseethenewfashioncollection,enjoyadrinkandnibblesand at the same time support disadvantaged young people through the work of Passages.

Celebrate: Passages staff and young people celebrated bycreatingt-shirtsrepresentingeachyoungperson’stimeat Passages. A display was also created to celebrate people who function well while living with a mental illness.
Connect: Passages staff organised a networking event to connect with all of the wonderful services that work with Passages on a regular basis. Young people were also encouraged to check on each other and ask someone ‘howareyoufeeling?’
Grow:One of the events to represent ‘grow’was tocreate a new experience for many of the young people at Passages. Staff tried to do this by introducing young people to new food experiences. There were some particularly funny faces made when trying foods, such as: Yemistes, hummus, baguettes, prawns, mushrooms,bruschetta,chorizo,andamixofdifferentvegetables.

Homeless Persons Week was a huge success for Passages Resource Centre in Northbridge and Peel with all young people who visited the service over the week receiving a Homelessness Australia USB wristband and a toiletries bag.
At Northbridge, the Passages team took part in a number of HomelessPersons’WeekactivitiesincludingorganisingthePassagesBigBreakfastonTuesday7Augustthatcateredfor27youngpeople.
Passages Resource Centre Peel and WestAus Crisis & Welfare ServiceshostedalunchtimesausagesizzleontheEasternForeshore, Mandurah, on Thursday 9 August as part ofHomelessPersons’Week.Theeventwasanopportunityformembers of the Peel community to meet with local service providers and learn about the services and facilities available locally for people who are homeless, at risk of homelessness or without stable accommodation. Twelve local services had information stalls at the event and the sausage sizzlewaskindlycookedbystudentvolunteersfromJohnTonkinCollege.

Funds raised will be used across a number of initiatives including the ongoing support of the Passages Resource Centre education and training program and operational support for Passages Resource Centre Peel.
Participants and top fundraisers in 2012 who braved the chilly 1.8 degree C. early morning minimum included BarryFelstead-CrownPerth,JohnWelbourn-EquatorialResources Limited, RobVelletri -MonodelphousGroup,BrianKelly-KentzPtyLtd,MikeYoung-BCIronLimited,Keith Gordon - Emeco Holding, Mark Pownell - WABusiness News, Adam Boyd - Pacific Energy Limited, GraemePrior-Hall&PriorAgedCare,BobBollen-BenzIndustries WA Pty Ltd.
The night began with dinner comprising a cup of soup and a bread roll followed by the emotional stories of people who have been assisted by Passages and other StVincentdePaulSocietyhomelessservices.FirsttimeparticipantMikeYoung,CEOBCIron,sharedhisreasonsfor participating this year – the moving story of his older brother Skip who overcame drug addiction and survived four years of homelessness in northern Canada with the help of a community welfare organisation. Once the official proceedings ended participants collected their cardboard and headed out into the grounds of the WACA to find a position to sleep for the night.
