PASOLINK Network Management System for UNIX
The PASOLINK Network Management System (PNMS) is designed to bring comprehensive, easy-to-use and cost-effective management to the integrated microwave network environment. A user-friendly graphical interface together with a set of integrated tools enable the network operators to
remotely monitor and control the status and configuration of the entire PASOLINK and PASOLINK+
network.
This UNIX based system also provides monitoring of the live microwave link performance, easy
viewing of various radio parameters, and advanced alarm management.
FEATURES AND BENEFITS
Multi-layer Display
Starting at the root level, by clicking on theselected item (icon), the tree-structured displayscan be viewed in a subsequent manner. Thisfeature enables the network administrator toquickly view the network from a system-levelperspective.
Link Oriented Visualization
The microwave radio links are clearly visualizedon the display. Combining equipment status withkey parameter settings and performance data forboth sides of a microwave link in a singlewindow allows easy troubleshooting and efficientmaintenance work.
Remote Access
Whether at the central or a remote site, access
to any network element (NE) in the network isseamlessly connected through one of the servicechannels.
Standard Platform
For ease of operation and maintainability, theUNIX operating system is employed as theplatform for the central management software(PNMS) and Windows 2000/NT/98/95
operating
system is the platform for the software at the NEsite (PNMT).
SNMP Interface (Optional)
An optional SNMP Interface is provided to makethe PASOLINK and PASOLINK
+radio
equipment an integral part of the higher levelnetwork management system.
Standard Performance Parameters
The link performance is measured and can bemonitored equivalent to the ITU-T G.826recommendation.

SYSTEM OVERVIEW
The PASOLINK Network Management System comprises three elements, a high performancecomputer with peripheral equipment, a software package called PASOLINK Network managementsystem (PNMS) and PASOLINK Management Card (PM CARD, only for PASOLINK) to be equippedin the PASOLINK equipment.
The PNMS is located at a central or a regional operation center and enables network operators tomonitor and control the PASOLINK / PASOLINK
+network and its elements remotely. Alternatively, a
laptop computer with simplified software package, called PASOLINK Network Management Terminal(PNMT) is available for maintenance purpose.
A PASOLINK/PASOLINK+
NE at the central site interfaces with the PNMS through one of thefollowing interfaces.
- PASOLINK : RS232C 19.2/9.6kbps, Async (through Router)
- PASOLINK+
:10BASE-T(LAN) or V.11 19.2kbps, Async (through Router)
Communication to the Remote PASOLINK/ PASOLINK+
is established through one of the digitalservice channels in the network.

KEY COMPONENTS
PNMS
Sun Workstation with its peripheral equipmentand UNIX operating system is used to support
PNMS software.
It provides a central access point to monitor andcontrol the entire network remotely. The PNMSsoftware provides map viewing of the entirenetwork as well as its individual subnetworks.
The PNMS provides means to edit, upload, anddownload the configuration files to each of the
PASOLINK / PASOLINK+
network elements.
Multi-level access privileges are implemented toensure the security of the system.
PNMTA mobile terminal such as of a laptop PCrunning Windows 2000/NT/98/95 Operatingsystem containing a simplified version of thePASOLINK Network Management softwarecalled PNMT, is provided for maintenancepurpose.
This configuration can monitor and control a
single PASOLINK / PASOLINK+
link at a time.
Any link through the network, connected via
digital service channel, can be monitored andcontrolled remotely from the laptop.
PM Card (only for PASOLINK)
The PASOLINK Management Card (PM CARD)is an optional plug-in module for NEC'sPASOLINK Indoor equipment.
The PM CARD handles the communicationbetween the PASOLINK network elements andthe Network Management system. It collects upto 300 event logging data and up to seven daysof performance data.
The PM CARD can either connect permanentlyor occasionally to the NMS. The PM CARDcommunicates with each other via one of theservice channels. It serves as a single accesspoint and enables the remote access to anyPASOLINK in the network.
(The PM Card function is incorporated in the
PASOLINK+.)

BASIC FUNCTIONS -PNMS-
Status Monitoring and Display
The PNMS monitors the status of the
PASOLINK / PASOLINK+
stations by way of
polling mechanism. Detection of a status changeor failure to report at one of thePASOLINK/PASOLINK
+stations will result in a
color change on the display and if appropriate, inan audible alarm.
The multi-level windowing structurecorresponding to different map levels provideseasy guidance to pinpoint to the PASOLINK /
PASOLINK+
station of the concern and
subsequently to its components.
For ease of operation and quick reference, thePNMS automatically displays the status of the
opposite PASOLINK / PASOLINK+
station with
its key link parameters.
As shown in the figure to the right, key
components of PASOLINK / PASOLINK+
such
as the outdoor unit (ODU), indoor unit (IDU) andthe PASOLINK Management Card (PM CARD,only for PASOLINK) are distinguished. Thedetailed information for each of thesecomponents can be found in the subsequent
windows.
Remote Control
The PNMS software provides remote control ofvarious link related parameters such as transmitpower and frequency allocation.
Auxiliary Input/OutputSix photo-coupler input ports and four relayoutput ports are available in the PASOLINK /
PASOLINK+ equipment to allow monitoring andcontrolling of the miscellaneous equipment atsite.
The types of alarm and control for these portscan be defined freely by the operator.

BASIC FUNCTIONS -PNMS-
Event Logging
Events occurring in the operation of the networkand the management system are storedautomatically and displayed in the event logging
window.
The following events are logged:
- Status change- Alarm occurrence- Alarm recovery- Control initiation- Parameter change
The events to be logged can be filtered inaccordance with some specified events and aspecified period. Filtering options includePASOLINK / PASOLINK
+equipment, status, and
items.
Alarm Management
Two alarm logging windows are provided. One isa list of all active alarms in the network and theother, a list of recent alarm occurrence and
recovery.
The alarms to be logged can be filtered inaccordance with some specified events and aspecified period. Filtering options includePASOLINK / PASOLINK

items. Alarm History window(reference only)

BASIC FUNCTIONS -PNMS-
Performance Monitoring
The PNMS is able to retrieve the performance
data of all listed PASOLINK / PASOLINK+
stations and their associated microwave linkequivalent to ITU-T G.826 recommendation. For that purpose, the following performanceparameters are measured:
(For PASOLINK)- Errored Second Ratio (ESR)- Severely Errored Second Ratio (SESR)- Unavailable Seconds Ratio (UASR)- Background Block Error Ratio (BBER)
(For PASOLINK+
)
- Errored Second(ES)- Severely Errored Second (SES)- Unavailable Seconds (UAS)- Background Block Error (BBE)- Out of Frame Seconds (OFS)
Thresholds can be defined in each parameter tosignal an alarm when a performance objectivehas failed.
The performance monitoring display is availablein either a chart or a graph format for a selected
period of time.
Security
PASOLINK Network Management Systememploys high security measure to protect thenetwork and network management system fromunauthorized access. Ten levels of userprivileges are defined.
The highest level is the administrator level whichassigns the full access to the network and
network management system and has the abilityto create and assign privileges to other users.
Privileges differ in the extent of access to a
certain PASOLINK / PASOLINK+
groups and
station
