Old Testament Covenants:Part One

Covenant• Covenant- • The Latin word “Testament”

means Covenant• The most famous covenant

happened between Abraham and Yahweh

• The Covenant of marriage is a reflection of the love that God has for us….– God loves us unconditionally– He will never go away no

matter what happens

• Wedding Vows are another form of Covenant that are said in front of a married couple’s family, friends, church community and God.

The Church is the Bride of Christ

• A bride (wife) and groom (husband) are two separate people that become united together in the covenant of marriage.

• Sexual Intercourse is a physical example of what happens spiritually in marriage.

• A bride and groom give up their individual lives to get married

• In the same way, Jesus gave up his life for us, the Church

The Covenant with Noah

God’s covenant with Noah is also with all humankind and creation.

“Never again shall all bodily creatures be destroyed by the waters of a flood” (Genesis 9:11)

God commits to saving humanity by a different way than destroying all sinners.

The Abrahamic Covenant

God and Abraham entered into a covenant, or sacred promise

Yahweh (God) Promised: 1. 2. 3. Abraham Promised: To only worship God

(Monotheism) As a physical sign of the

covenant, Abrams people were circumcised

Patriarchs and Matriarchs of Judaism

Patriarch- The father or leader of a tribe, clan, or tradition.

Matriarch- The mother of a tribe, clan or tradition.

The Mosaic Covenant

Theophany- God renews the Covenant he made with Abraham with Moses on Mount Sinai

The Mosaic Covenant

Yahweh: The Israelites will

be God’s chosen people

Israelites: Must follow the 10 Commandments

The Commandments are also referred to as the Mosaic Law

From then on the Law and the Covenant are linked together

Torah is Hebrew for “law”

witness against your neighbor." (Ex 20:16)

The Davidic Covenant

Ark of the Covenant-

King David wants to build a permanent house (Temple) for the Ark of the Covenant

COVENANT: David

Asked to wait for his heir to build the Temple

God David’s house and

kingdom shall endure forever and his throne shall stand firm
