Paschal Life Parish, School and Alumni News
Spring/Summer, 2016 Volume 6, Issue 2
SHARING OUR GIFTS 2015-2016
Dear Family & Friends:
There is never a dull time at SPB, but there are extra special event that we cherish
and enjoy each year in our parish’s life! Our 7th annual parish festival, Spring Fling
expanded to a 4-day event. More sponsors, volunteers and participants made it
quite successful: our biggest and most profitable ever, gaining $40,000 for our
operating budget. We also blessed the Bourgeois Bells and the Light of Two
Moons assisted us in the music for the outdoor Mass. What a joy to have Deacon
Joe’s family here for the special blessing. God and our patron saint, Paschal
Baylon, blessed us with incredible weather: we are so thankful!
We look forward to other wonderful events this summer, including our Saint Ann
Triduum (July 23 – 26). This annual devotion, blessing of children, anointing of
the sick and prayers with the relic of good Saint Ann strengthens us in holiness. We
will also host an international convocation (July 29 – 31) for the Year of Mercy
with the SSS and Eymardian Family. We are all invited to participate and enjoy the fruits of these amazing
speakers. (See the SSS website or SPB bulletin for the flyer and registration form or call the office to have
materials mailed to you.) We also enjoy the annual parish picnic at Highland Heights Park (Sunday, August
21 at Noon) and ice cream social (Sunday, August 28 at 8 p.m. in the newly remodeled Eymard Room).
In the past year and a half we have worked tirelessly on our new Pastoral Plan. I am so proud of the
parishioners who studied the parish’s life and put this strategic plan into place. In this issue of Paschal Life, we
have our first report from many parish ministries and organizations, highlighting the great work that has been
accomplished over the first year of the plan. Thank you for your hard work, your dedication, and your faithful
stewardship. Your hard work has paid off – for next year, we will have our first balanced budget for both the
school and the parish. (A financial summary will be mailed to you again this fall.) We appreciate your prayers
and are grateful for your donations that support our parish’s financial life.
God doesn’t take a vacation from us, so let’s not take a vacation from worshipping God! We accomplish so
much together with the help of God! Let us continue to pray for each other and pray together. See you Sunday
at Mass and join us one day a week for a weekday Mass, Morning or Evening Prayer or prayer in the presence
of the Blessed Sacrament – a summer resolution! Your relationship with God deserves more time in prayer and
communication: it will change your life, I guarantee it!
In Christ our Eucharist,
Reverend John Thomas J. Lane, SSS, Class of 1979
8th Pastor
A WORD FROM OUR STRATEGIC IMPLEMENTATION TEAM
Dear Saint Paschal Baylon Parish,
We are happy to share this issue of Paschal Life with you. As you know, SPB has created and adopted a
rolling 5-year Pastoral Plan. This strategic plan was created by many hard-working parishioners over the
course of a year. Much thought, creativity and care was put into deciding the different goals and action-
items for each ministry. Now, as we enter Year 2 of this Plan, we have highlighted many of the
accomplishments as given to us directly by the ministries. As we continue with the Plan into upcoming
years, we will hope you will join us in supporting the mission and goals. Our Pastoral Plan is helping to
make SPB the best parish and community it can be!
On behalf of the entire Pastoral Council, we hope you enjoy this issue!
Regards,
Kelly Ericsson Jeff Gueulette Rosalie Lewis

SHARING OUR GIFTS: PASTORAL PLAN UPDATE
At Leadership Day, 2013, the Pastoral Council and Pastoral
Staff mandated the creation of a 5-year Pastoral Plan and an
ad hoc committee to develop this plan. The goal of the
Pastoral Planning Committee was to create a dynamic plan
that builds upon our vibrant Saint Paschal Baylon parish
community and
continues our rich
legacy.
Since January 2014, the committee volunteered hundreds of hours.
Input was gathered from hundreds of parishioners via interviews and
surveys. Additionally, students from the Weatherhead School of
Management Case Western Reserve University provided
supplementary analysis.
The Pastoral Plan identifies priorities in the following areas:
1. Spirituality
2. School
3. Youth and Family
4. Outreach, Social Justice and Community Service
5. Stewardship
6. Community Awareness
7. Governance and Operations
For each of these areas, a strategic direction has been developed.
These goals provide a vision for the future of our parish.
Objectives and strategies for each area have been identified, along
with suggested action items and focus areas.
Our plan was implemented in January 2015. On the following
pages, you will find a summary of our progress as
we begin to achieve the vision of our Pastoral Plan.
SPIRITUALITY
The strategic focus for this area of our Pastoral Plan is to foster and deepen our spirituality through
opportunities for faith formation and inspiring liturgies.
One of our key objectives is to affirm our faith formation with
programs that guide us to a richer relationship with Christ and each
other. We have focused on these areas:
Continue an active formation program that offers an explanation and
understanding of the Mass and liturgical season.
In the Pastor’s Perspective column, Fr. Lane regularly offers
explanations of various traditions, symbols and customs so that we may
better understand their significance and deepen our relationship with
Christ and strengthen our faith.
Small Groups were formed for faith-sharing and for parishioners to get to know each other.
Christ Renews His Parish program and ARISE: Together in Christ, included a potluck dinner in November.
We also prepared Epiphany Packets which contained a blessing prayer and chalk to bless and mark the door
in your home.
Season 2 of ARISE was held this past Lent. Based on the Samaritan Woman at the Well, the groups chose to
fund water pumps for third world countries. Our closing celebration took place at the Agape Meal. The
group baked the altar breads that were used at the Holy Thursday Eucharist.
Suggested Opening/Closing Prayers are shared with all
ministries.
Homily Prep Group meets regularly.
The Eymard Spiritual group is in its second year of
offering Eymard at "Prime-Time." In June and August
we move from the usually pot luck luncheon with a
guest speaker to an evening potluck dinner also with a
speaker.
Something new has been added to our luncheon
gatherings - students of Saint Paschal Baylon School
join us for lunch and conversation. Our "Eymard buddies" have a great time with us and we certainly have
enjoyed having them with us.
The Associates of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament sponsor a monthly study program on various
topics related to Saint Peter Julian Eymard.
Another objective is to energize the congregation through meaningful and memorable liturgies and
worship, to actively challenge parishioners to participate, understand and live their faith. We have been
working on these action items:
Incorporate alternative liturgical services, for example, Taize prayer.
Invite and encourage a greater number of people to become involved in ministries that are part of the
Eucharistic celebration.
A Ministry Fair was held in January, 2016.
Developed training videos for altar servers.
Use visual arts to enhance the liturgy and the worshipping community.
SCHOOL
The faculty, staff and volunteers at Saint Paschal Baylon School continue to foster Christ-centered values
within each student, while providing a challenging curriculum in an environment of dignity and respect.
Dear Saint Paschal Baylon Parishioners,
It has been one amazing year at Saint Paschal Baylon Catholic Elementary school as we celebrate 60
years of “Educating Minds and Nourishing Souls.” Our celebrations were guided by the goals of our Parish
Strategic Plan to which the faculty and staff are committed.
We began this year reestablishing connections with old
friends, as our guests of honor, at our 60th Anniversary
opening celebration and reception on Wednesday,
September 23, 2015. Former principals, teachers, and staff
were invited back to rekindle friendships. Sister Mary
Alice Slowey revealed our new 60th Anniversary logo
during the entrance procession at Mass and Mayor Scott
Coleman proclaimed the opening of our 60th Year.
Afterwards, current and former faculty and staff gathered
together to remember things past and to admire things
present.
Saint Paschal Baylon presented the Distinguished Graduate Award to
one of our alumni. That award was presented to Tim Salcer, class of
1992, for his commitment to service, prayer, and belief. The evening
continued with a social gathering in the Eymard room and tours of the
school accompanied by an occasional opportunity to squeeze into an
old seat or open a former tiny locker. Laughter filled the Eymard room
as class after class exchanged memories of Saint Paschal Baylon. It
truly was a “Knight to Remember!”
We connected with our “Grand Pals” on May 4, 2016. Cherishing
those who mean so much to us, we invited grandparents and special
persons to celebrate our May Crowning along with our students and
especially with the second grade class who wore their First
Communion suits and dresses as they led the opening procession. Our “Grand Pals” were treated to a special
performance by Grades K - 3 following Mass. Finally, on May 27, we completed this 60th Year by celebrating
with our wonderful students on Saint Paschal Day! This special day began with Mass and continued with fun
and our buddies, as well as, a lunch and a DJ courtesy of the Athletic Association. We enjoyed a great time!
Thank you to everyone who has made and continues to make our 60th Year our best year ever!
God bless,
Carol L. Jansky, Principal
YOUTH AND FAMILY
“Have the courage to be happy.” – Pope Francis
With these words as inspiration, the goal of this section of our Pastoral Plan focuses on providing opportunities
for youth and family engagement.
One of our goals is to create stronger connections to the parish community through social and spiritual
interactions involving both youth and their families.

and services by reenacting the Stations of the Cross this
past Good Friday.
The Youth Group participated in our recent Spring Fling
Festival by selling lemonade.

needed. Please call the parish office if you are interested.
The Children’s Choir sang at several Masses during the year.
OUTREACH, SOCIAL JUSTICE AND COMMUNITY SERVICE
As a parish community, our goal is to sustain and expand our commitment to serve one another within our
parish and beyond.

social justice concerns.
Our parish participated in Highland Heights Home Days and will be there again on July 23.
Our Eucharistic Ministers to the Homebound continue to serve members of our parish who are unable to
worship with us.

area – the Cleveland Clinic main campus, University Hospital and Hillcrest.
Rosaries have been shared with Cleveland area homeless and nursing homes.
Our Prayer Shawl Ministry members began making pocket
prayer shawls, which are small crocheted pieces with a cross
stitched in that can be kept in a pocket or purse, or used as a
mug coaster.
The Prayer Shawl Ministry started making baby prayer
shawls for babies being christened at our parish.
The Manna Ministry continues to assist in the emergency
financial needs of parishioners due to illness, unemployment,
underemployment or other emergencies.
Our Day School and PSR students prepared Christmas gifts for the homeless that were delivered by our
Helping Hands Ministry.
The Helping Hands Ministry has expanded its
outreach to include Villa Serena.
The City of Highland Heights has generously
donated plots of land to the Helping Hands
Ministry to plant a vegetable garden to help
feed the area homeless.
The Helping Hands Ministry reports that the
need continues to grow and acknowledges
that the ministry is able to assist those in need
through the generosity of our parishioners and those in the community.
The Helping Hands Ministry helped take people off the street and helped find them jobs.
The Helping Hands Ministry has educated many on various resources and community agencies available
to offer assistance.

Parish Festival Recap
This year’s seventh annual parish festival was four days filled with faith, fellowship, food and fun! Special
thanks to the Spring Fling Committee, volunteers, sponsors and a fantastic parish community!
Our SPB school band concert on Thursday evening was top notch. It was a special treat for those who have
never had the opportunity to hear these talented musicians. And, who could resist the delicious cuisine served at
Saturday’s Pasta Dinner?
What better way to celebrate the Lord’s Day than to gather as a family of faith? Our new “Bourgeois Bells”
were formally dedicated with Deacon Joseph Bourgeois, SSS and members of his family in attendance. The
bells were a gift of the Bourgeois family, in memory of Father Louis Bourgeois. Following the blessing,
members of the parish community gathered for an outdoor Mass.
Festival foods, rides, games and entertainment rounded out the four festive days!
