It was discovered that most available standards are very locally based, apart from NBIM and PAS 1192-2, who both see themselves as international standards; NBIMS’ influence, however, does not stretch far outside the US.

PAS 1192-2 is a standard focused on collaboration in the design/build phase of a project. In terms of functionality its reference to the EIR puts it ahead of its only rival, NBIMS.

The AEC sector must be encouraged to move away from in-house standards and encouraged to start preparing for international work by adopting PAS 1192-2, as it is on track to become an ISO.

The international market is very important to the Irish AEC industry and adopting PAS 1192-2 will open up this market, which includes, but is not exclusively, the UK.
PAS 1192-2 should be formally adopted by the Irish Government and specified on government contracts.

This would become a de facto mandate without the restriction of an actual mandate, which would give more flexibility to SMEs.
