Garbage mounds rotting in the streets create an unhygienic environment for a city’s inhabitants

The gravity of the problem is increasing rapidly in Metropolitan cities in particular

This is mainly due to massive migration of people form rural to urban regions

Ever-increasing population is causing an overburden upon the basic amenities including solid waste management

A UN Report of 1995 states that 40 percent of the India’s total population will be clustered in the Indian cities by the year 2025

Thus Urban India is on the brink of massive Waste Disposal Crisis

MSW Management Rules of 2004 are barely enough even to maintain a system of waste collection and disposal

Results have been quite encouraging

People are slowly waking up and trying to manage their own waste to certain extent

Treatment Facility is provided with the following Equipments and Provisions as per the Guidelines issued by CPCB

Incinerator : Diesel fired, with Venturi scrubber, burning capacity of

50 kg/h,PLC based with tamper proof panel and a recording device

Autoclave : PLC based with tamper proof control panel and recording device

Shredder : Run on electricity and used for shredding sterilized plastic material

Facilities for : Bin washing, floor washing and vehicle washing

Other Requirements: Sharps pit, effluent treatment plant and secured landfill for the burial of ash shall be made available soon at this facility.

Located along the scenic banks of Thane Creek

Facility has been set up in compliance with CRZ (Coastal Regulatory Zone) Rules

The land has been provided by TMC

It fulfills all the requirements as per the CPCB norms

Segregation At Source

At our facility, we accept only the waste segregated as per the BMW (Management & Handling) rules, 1998

The process of segregation has been slightly modified to make it compatible with our system

Extensive on site training is provided to the nurses, ward boys, sweepers and other concerned health care workers to ensure proper segregation

We make use of related audio-visual aids to emphasize the significance of segregation

Coloured, pictorial posters explaining segregation have been displayed in the health care units

Collection

Coloured Plastic Bags are provided as per theMPCB norms to our customers

Segregated waste is temporarily stored in such bags by these generators till collection

Metal sharps are stored in strong plastic canisters filled with Sodium Hypochlorite Solution

These health care units have specific areas designated for temporary storage of the waste in their own premises

Transport Vehicle

We have 5 vehicles, which are three wheeler tempos and a manually driven tricycle

These are fully dedicated for the collection of Bio-Medical Waste from the source of generation

These vehicles are designed and modified as per the prescribed rules

Separate cabins are provided for drivers and BMW containers

The base of the BMW cabin of each vehicle has been made leak proof to avoid spilling of the liquid from the waste during transportation

The BMW cabins are designed in such a way that the washing and disinfection can be done easily

The inner surface of BMW cabin is made smooth to avoid water retention on the floor

For smooth, easy and uneventful loading and unloading of BMW, necessary provisions have been made

The exterior of these vehicles and the attached cabins have been painted with BMW Hazard logo and all other necessary information as prescribed by the authority

We have also provided separate bath room and toilet facilities for the drivers, helpers and shop floor workers

This is provided with excellent ventilation system

Disposal of BMW

Incinerated Ash : Deep burial in a secured landfill

Plastic waste : Autoclaving, Shredding and Recycling at a private facility

Sharps* : Disinfected. Mutilated and then Dumped into municipal landfill

* We are in search of other alternatives for disposal of metal sharps by means of smelting. This will be helpful in reducing the volume substantially

Documentation

The documents are maintained as per the advice obtained from the healthcare units for each category of waste

Log books for the equipments and site records are maintained

All these records are easily available and are retrieved at the CBMWTF for inspection

Salient features of our BMW Treatment Facility

The facility has been dedicated to the citizens of Thane at the hands of Shri. Ram Naik, then Petroleum Minister, Govt. of India on 22nd June, 2003

The whole system have been authorized by MPCB for Collection, Transportation, Treatment and Disposal of BMW

The required land and infrastructure has been provided by Thane Municipal corporation on rental basis

Adequate task force is available to run this facility

Routine medical check up is carried out for the workers

These workers are vaccinated regularly

Salient features of our BMW Treatment Facility

We have obtained Medi Claim Insurance for the staff, who handle the process of BMW

Some of the vehicles are modified and working on LPG as an eco-friendly gesture

To create the sense of awareness amongst the people- We encourage local school & college students and general public to visit our facility

This facility is run entirely by an environmental NGO for a Municipal Corporation at a very low and reasonable rates

We have been invited by the concerned authorities from different parts of Maharashtra and also from Goa for setting up BMW treatment facilities

Salient features……….We have obtained ISO 9001:2000, quality system Certificate from Det Norske Veritas (DNV) ,Netherlands for our CBMWTF

So far, we are running this CBMWT facility almost for past three and half years without any serious problem.

CBMWTF is self funded without any govt. funding or otherwise and as yet we have been able to run it quite successfully

The funds generated from this facility are used for our other projects, maintenance, salaries of our employees etc.

Enviro-Vigil is an environmental NGO committed to provide Clean, Healthy and Hygienic Environment to the citizens of Thane

With a group of dedicated and committed volunteers, we have undertaken many environmental activities

Some of these activities are……

School of Environment to provide informal education to the school children

Organizing seminars on the theme “Green Careers”, carrier opportunities in the field of environment

A monthly magazine entitled “Aaple Paryavaran” (Our Environment) in our native language ,i.e.Marathi is being published for the past two years

Creating public awareness regarding solid waste management with the involvement of famous cinema and stage actors and actresses

Development of “Theme Park”for solid waste management to educate the people in this regard

We are conducting workshops, training programmes for school teachers who are supposed to teach the subject of environmental education in their schools
