Fan clutch sizing is directly related to the amount of torque required to start and run theengine fan. This is calculated by multiplying the fan horsepower draw by 63000. Theresultant figure is then divided by the maximum RPM of the fan. This provides the EngineFan maximum torque requirement to drive the Engine Fan.

SYSTEM SENTRY FUSE

All HT/S-Type Fan Clutches with a 9.5 inch Diameter Drive Disc have been equipped with a System Sentry Fuse.

The System Sentry Fuse ( Part No.F994098) is located in one of the raised nodes on the front section of the Piston Friction Disc (PFD) Assembly. Should the Fan Clutch be subjected to excessive and prolonged slippage causing overheating, the System Sentry Fuse will melt, thereby releasing the air.

This is designed to protect vital Fan Clutch parts.

Note: The System Sentry Fuse has a left hand thread identified with an arrow on the Piston Friction Disc (PFD) Assembly.

This information is provided to assist with the installation and operation of the Horton Fan Clutch.

C A U T I O N !WORK SAFELY AROUND FAN AREA.

USE CARE WHEN WORKING WITH COMPRESSED AIR LINES.

Air Pressure at Fan Clutch input should be 100 psi for correct Fan Clutch operation. Low air pressure can lead to Fan Clutch slippage. This can cause damage to vital Fan Clutch components if left unattended.

Air System should be clean and dry of moisture. Drain the Filter twice weekly. The Filter bowl is located at the Solenoid.

Air Lines, avoid excessive bends in air line: (1) to the Air Solenoid, (2) from the Air Solenoid to the Fan Clutch.

Fan Clutch Drive Belts should be matched sets (where applicable) and tensioned to manufacturers specification.

Fan Blades should be checked for correct clearance to radiator, shroud and engine components. If fan blade damage or cracks are detected, replace the fan.Routine inspection of Horton Fan Clutch should be carried out every 200,000 km. Switch off engine. Do notwork around the fan area with the engine running. The Fan Clutch could engage at any time.

Check for air leaks at the Fan Clutch and air lines leading to the Fan Clutch.

Remove and plug air line at the Fan Clutch input. Loosen fan belts. Rotate the pulley and feel for smoothrotation of bearings. Repeat this procedure on the front section of the Fan Clutch. Check friction facing for wear. The Friction Facing should not be less than approx. 4mm thick.

Avoid applying steam or high pressure cleaner directly to the Fan Clutch espesially when hot. Cover Fan Clutch and all electrical components prior to cleaning radiator cooling fins.

HORTON FAN CLUTCH MANUAL LOCK UP PROCEDURE

Disconnect and plug air line to Fan Clutch. Align the two bolt holes in front section of Fan Clutch with the two tapped holes located in the pulley sheave. Install the 2 grade 8 5/16” UNC socket head cap screws supplied in the glove box kit. Tighten cap screws to 25-30 ft.lbs. Clamping the clutch, not the screws,provides the turning force. Part Number for lock up bolt kit F21617.Note: The lock up procedure is a temporary measure only. Fault should be found and rectified as soon

as possible.

The Horton HT650 on-off Fan Clutch represents the ultimate in medium duty fan clutch technology. A light weight aluminium housing with a torque capacity of up to 1150 in/lbs, the HT650 is suitable as a replacement for a viscous fan drive, or an upgradefor a direct (constant) fan drive.

All Horton pneumatic fan clutches are field serviceable by any Horton authorised agent. Repair kits are readily available and are easy to intall.

This type of Friction Facing is only available for the HTS.-.Type.FanClutch (9.5 inch diameter).

The Sintered Bronze Facing can be used on 450 HP plus engines and will help reduce Fan Clutch slippage for high torque Fan Drive applications.

Part No. F25008XD Advantage Supa Kit to suit HTS.-.Type Fan Clutches contains the Sintered Bronze Lining plus all the parts shown on Page 6 of this Horton Fan Clutch Parts Manual.
