INSIDE OUTSOURCING: Unveiling Key Drivers & Barriers to Outsourcing Facilities Management

Sodexo and the Association of College and University Housing Officers International (ACUHO-I) have a new and exciting research partnership and together released the year-one results of our facilities benchmarking research. Sodexo and ACUHO-I share the mission of improving quality of life for college and university students; we also share the philosophy that improving quality of life requires data, knowledge and the application of best practices. The first annual Outsourcing of Facilities Management Survey measured presence and understanding of housing facilities management as it relates to service strategies, technology integration, alignment with sustainability goals, and outsourcing.

WKU Resource Conservation hosted a popular activity booth at

WKU’s 2nd annual Maker Faire, an event designed to promote skill-

building, upcycling, and repair through active engagement and

education. Participants learned how to forge steel, make jewelry,

weave and more. Using vinyl records that had been withdrawn from

WKU’s Library, Resource Conservation staff assisted 50 attendees in

re-purposing the records into fully-functional clocks.

Today’s students are accustomed to technology that makes their daily lives easier. Chatbots are an excellent example. As more people become comfortable interacting with them, chatbots are increasingly considered a valuable resource. In a recent Ipsos poll, more than 70% of college students expressed interest in having a campus chatbot available.

A chatbot is a way to interact with consumers through text messaging inside an application, like a website. Sodexo recently partnered with Satisfi labs to embed a chatbot, known as SodexoBOT, into the SodexoMyWay website platform, which helps users navigate life on campus.

Ohio Northern University (ONU) is the first Sodexo partner campus to implement SodexoBOT. When a user visits ONU’s dining website or the dining Facebook page, an interactive chat window pops up, inviting users to type in a question. Users can ask about dining venue hours, menu options, and locations through the chat window, and SodexoBOT replies with meaningful information. It’s a great resource for individuals with specific dietary needs, providing information regarding nutrition content, allergens, and ingredients. SodexoBOT also supports e-commerce by making appropriate product suggestions and offering users links to products and special offers.

In addition to serving as a resource for dining information, multiple other potential applications of chatbot technology can enhance quality of life on campus, such as providing a convenient way to send maintenance requests to the facilities management team through an easy and efficient work-order submission process.

SodexoBOT will arrive on more campuses this fall. In addition, a voice-activated version will be available soon on platforms such as Alexa and Google Assistant. Students are increasingly accustomed to using responsive voice-activated technology to quickly locate information and will love being able to find exactly what they’re looking for simply by saying “Alexa, where can I get a gluten-free meal on campus?” or “Hey Google, what dining locations are open right now?”

This application adds a unique feature to the campus experience, enhancing convenience and student satisfaction. SodexoBOT technology differentiates Sodexo’s partner campuses to current and potential students by making it easier than ever to find the information and resources they need. It’s just one more way Sodexo improves the quality of life at each campus the company serves.

Every April, WKU partners with the City of Bowling Green to host Arbor Day, a

day of celebrating trees! While educating attendees about proper tree care

practices and tree characteristics, WKU handed out 1,500 trees in the

following four varieties: Sugar Maple, Green Giant Arborvitae, Catalpa and

Eastern Redbud.

SUSTAINABILITY

WKU’s Earth Day Celebration is one of the most highly attended events on campus. The

Student Government Association Sustainability Committee coordinates this successful

event, complete with entertainment, local food, and Big Red! Despite having to move the

event indoors due to inclement weather, over fifty community partners, University

departments, and student organizations filled Downing Student Union with hands-on

activities designed to promote environmental sustainability and social justice; highlights

include WKU Public Relations students’ “Recycling Rodeo,” Community Farmers Market’s

local foods tasting, and the Staff Sustainability Committee’s Office Supply Swap.

DRIVING PERFORMANCE

With Support from the Kentucky Energy and Environmental Cabinet, WKU reached

188,651 fans through promotional efforts focused on recycling education. The live on-

court game raised awareness about recycling, while the promotional video educated fans

about what can and cannot be recycled. As WKU’s cost share for this effort, student volun-

teers and community organizations cleaned the stadium/arena. Their efforts throughout

the 2018-2019 season achieved an impressive 81% waste diversion rate. In exchange for

their service, WKU donated $500 to their organization or philanthropy of choice. Facilities

Management continues to find ways to invest in community and student organizations.

Spring 2019 Work Order Stats:

**8,946 Routine work orders issued during Spring Semester. 90.5% completion rate.

**Supported 98 Events during Spring Semester.

Cherry Blossom

Trees at

WKU!

The campus looks amazing in the Spring time. The Cherry Blossoms are in full color and the weather has been perfect toward the end of the month to walk and enjoy the beauty of our campus. The crews have been busy updating all the landscape beds.

WKU’s community recycling trailers divert 111,000 pounds of paper, plastic 1-7,

cardboard, glass and aluminum for the landfill each year.

We consistently work with Housing and Residence Life to ensure our residence halls

are maintained and cleaned efficiently.
