Dear Parents and Carers

This month the official (unvalidated) examination results and outcomes will be published

by the DCSF for 2009. The tables will demonstrate the strength of our achievement both

at GCSE/Key Stage 4 and A-Level/Post-16. Of particular note will be the Contextual Value-Added score that measures what value a school adds to the learning of its students

from their achievements at primary school, taking socio-economic factors into

consideration. On this measure Toot Hill School has performed strongly, both at Key Stage 4 and Post-16. This reflects our determination to ensure that every student achieves

their true potential.

This having been stated, we cannot be complacent. At Toot Hill School we are very

confident that we can continue to add even greater value to each student’s learning by

raising expectations to even greater heights. The cliché ‘Success breeds success’ is very

true. In school this year we can see an even greater focus for achievement in all year groups. Much credit is due to the students for their very positive engagement and

cooperation in class, and to the staff who guide them through the learning process. We

must remember that we have yet to see the full benefits of tiering, which will show in results of 2011 and 2012 exams, and the increased time we have given our core subjects

of English, Mathematics and Science. At this stage we are very confident of the benefits

this long-term structural change will secure. The arrangements will be supplemented by a significant curriculum change from September 2010 when we replace the current two

year Key Stage 4 programme with a three-year programme. Further details of this will be

given to parents and students next term. Critically, all of these changes clearly signal that

Toot Hill School is looking to the future with considerable optimism and is anticipating continued growth and success.

Education isn’t just about passing examinations, although this will always be our core business. It is also about empowering students to explore their talents and abilities and

acquire wider social skills. Our Academy programme goes from strength to strength with

more students than ever before engaging in after-school curricular and extra-curricular

activities. Linked to this, our Year 7 students, who have made an excellent start to their new school, will be involved with an exciting new community programme led by Mrs

Farnie and Mrs Brown. The starting activity will be a ‘Shoe Box Appeal’ whereby our

students reach out to other children less fortunate in their lives, especially at Christmas. We want to build a Shoe Box Wall that will represent our desire to support others in the

global community.

Soon it will be Christmas and our seasonal calendar of activities will be in full swing.

TOOT HILL SCHOOL GOVERNING BODY

Partnership Governors As from 1st September 2009, Toot Hill School attained Foundation School status. One of the changes this has brought about is that the Governing Body now has vacancies for two Partnership Governors, a category of governor that is new to this school. A Partnership Governor should provide a strong link to the wider local community. Partnership Governors are nominated by parents of school pupils. The school is looking for individuals with the time, energy and commitment to help make Toot Hill School become a truly outstanding school for its pupils and the community that it serves. The right people will:

Ideally live and/or work in the local area (within five miles of the school) Have a proven commitment to working for the local community Have a proven commitment to the education of young people in the area and

developing them as excellent citizens Be able to provide time and energy in helping with the governance of Toot Hill

School Support extra curricular activities provided by Toot Hill School, eg school

concerts, parent-teacher association meetings and events Be prepared to attend training sessions for Governors to ensure an

understanding of the latest developments in school governance Would someone you know in the local community make a good Partnership Governor? Toot Hill School; Multi Skills Festival

In October eighteen year 12 sports leaders organised a multi skills festival for pupils at our feeder primary schools.

Approximately sixty pupils from years 1,2 and 3 were involved in the ‘Funky Fruit and Vegetable’ Multi Skills Festi-

val. The youngsters had an opportunity to represent their school, meet new friends from other schools, try a variety of

sporting activities and be part of a team. From the ‘cool cucumbers’ to the ‘super strawberries’, “every child had a

great time and the leaders did a great job” (Jamie Tyler; Gunthorpe Primary). Well done to all of you who helped

organise the event and an additional thank you to Ryan Green and Mitchell Brown who volunteered as ‘Tooty the

Squirrel’ our beloved school mascot. (Mr Robertson)

Rushcliffe Football Festival

Four Toot Hill pupils including Matthew Filer, Callum Sykes, Adele Thorpe and Harry Dean took part in a new

initiative which started with a fantastic football festival held at Butt Playing Fields in Bingham. Students from

across Rushcliffe took part in the festival which helped the youngsters to improve their football skills and meet

new people from different schools. The event was a huge success and all those representing Toot Hill School

were great ambassadors for the school. Well done to all of you. (Mr Robertson)

Learning Support Department Monthly Review Meetings.

Does your son or daughter have special educational needs or are you concerned about the

possibility that they may have some difficulties with learning?

The Learning Support Department hold informal monthly meetings for parents or carers

to come and discuss any concerns they may have, the support arrangements for their son

or daughter or to share information. These meetings are usually held on the last Tuesday

of every month in the Learning Support Department.

Meetings this half term will be on Tuesday 24th November and Tuesday 8th December.

Please ring the school office if you would like to make an appointment with a member of

the Learning Support team.

LRC - Summer Holiday Competition Winners! ‘Every Picture Tells a Story’ was the summer competition for students to enter. This year we had a

change to the usual format and asked students to get creative and re-design the cover of their favourite

book, along with details of why it was their favourite and what was wrong about the original cover.

The calibre of entries were superb which made choosing an overall winner impossible, we decided to

reward all students who took part with a £15 Victoria Centre gift card. Some of the student winners were featured in an article in last week’s Bingham Advertiser. Congratulations and well done to you all.

Winners this year were:-

Yr7 - Alice Booth, Ellis Cleland, Ed Flemming and Tara Smal. Yr8 - Becky Tupholme and Laura Hunter.

Yr11's Paulina Kohut, Nicole Swingler and Oliver Parker.

Toot Hill School Term Dates: Spring Term 2010

At their Termly meeting on 28th September the school governors resolved to agree an early return to school by

one day (Monday 4th January 2010) to be set against a Rushcliffe Area School Partnership Training day whereby

schools in the area will acquit their new legal obligation to work in partnership. The training day is planned for Friday 12th February 2009. This will give pupils an extension to the half-term break and will provide an opportu-

nity for families to depart early on the Friday for any planned holidays or trips.

Therefore the Spring Term 2010 will begin on Monday 4th January 2010 and half-term will begin on Friday 12th

February 2010.

Photo 1 The new technology block has been built by a company based in Hull called Britspace. They specialise in manufacturing steel framed modular buildings. These are made in a huge fac-tory and then delivered to site and fitted together according to the design plan. Mr Smith had the opportunity to visit the factory back in June to see how works were progressing.

tions for the new building.

THE NEW DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY BLOCK

Photo 3 Early morning on the 23 July 2009, the first modules arrived on a convoy of trucks. A huge crane had been set up to hoist the modules into position. It was critical to the success of the whole build that the first module was lowered to exactly the correct position. This meant contractors had to get right down underneath the huge swinging structure. It was a tense moment!

These photographs were taken at the end of July and give a

first look

inside the new building. It was hard to believe that the whole

project would be completed in just eight weeks.

The building was officially handed over on September 25th.

With all the final structural and cosmetic works completed, the

installation of the new equipment and machinery will begin.

We are all looking forward to being able to move into the new

building in the forthcoming weeks. As staff we are thrilled to

have such a wonderful state of the art facility for our students

at Toot Hill School.
