Together, we've made many things possible As I look back on the past year, I am proud of what we have accomplished together. It’s because of you –

our heroic donors, staff, health care providers and volunteers – that we raised $18.8 million in support of

our hospital!

This past year was a very exciting time for the Foundation, as we embraced Trillium Health Partners' new

strategic plan and their mission of creating a new kind of health care for a healthier community.

It is your generous support that will help to make this strategy successful. In 2012, we made significant

strides, adding state-of-the-art equipment, expanding existing programs and funding new ones

that directly improve health care in our region.

We are building strong partnerships with our sister foundation at Credit Valley Hospital,

creating an enhanced model of collaboration that, with your continued support, will help

turn our hospital’s vision into reality!

Special thanks to our Board of Directors, who generously gave their time and talent and

who exemplify the true spirit of teamwork. This is an exciting time for Trillium Health

Centre Foundation and I look forward to what the future holds. Under the leadership of

We are Partners in Health with thehospital, our community and each otherIn April 2013, I became the Shared President and CEO of two exceptional foundations: Trillium Health Centre

Foundation and The Credit Valley Hospital Foundation.

Each of these foundations has a significant legacy of strong community support and leadership. And it is

through this support that Trillium Health Partners have been able to become a recognized leader in patient care

throughout the province

Trillium Health Partners, which encompasses The Credit Valley Hospital, Mississauga Hospital and Queensway

Health Centre, is now one of Ontario’s largest, academically-affiliated community hospitals. We are the

designated regional care centre for paediatrics, cardiac, renal, and cancer care – treating more cancer patients

than The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto and the only hospital to specialize in gynaecologic cancers

between Toronto and Hamilton.

This past year, Trillium Health Partners launched its new strategic plan – to create a new kind of health care for a

healthier community - built on the following tenets: highest quality care and an exceptional patient experience; the

right care in the right place at the right time; and research, innovation and education.

These are the areas in which you, as partners in health with us, can make a significant impact through

your continued philanthropic support. Your investment in these areas will enable our hospital to

continue to grow and to lead for the betterment of health care not just in Mississauga, the GTA,

but throughout the province.

For the past several months, both foundations have been working collaboratively on a number of

fundraising projects, some that benefit the broad hospital and others that meet site specific needs.

As shared president and CEO, I will continue to oversee this collaboration as we support Trillium

Health Partners in realizing its mission of a new kind of health care for a healthier community.

Whether we focus our support at one site, on one project, on research or on one piece of

equipment, the combined impact affects the entire hospital system. Together, as partners in health,

we are the building blocks of a new kind of health care, and the future looks very bright indeed.

Our new care spaces in the Mississauga Hospital’s West Wing have been recognized for their patient-centred design and

STEMI ProgramPatients who are declared a code STEMI* are experiencing the most dangerous type of heart attack, often fatal. Since

Trillium Health Partners launched the STEMI program in partnership with regional EMS, thousands of patients have

received life-saving angioplasty procedures in our Cardiac Unit. Our generous donors helped build and grow this life-

saving program. Currently, we are fundraising to revitalize and expand our fourth Cardiac Catheterization Lab.*ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction

Neuroscience Special Care UnitAn exceptionally generous, anonymous donor kick-started our fundraising for a Neuroscience Special Care Unit with a

$1-million gift and challenged our community to match it. We received an overwhelming response from individual and

direct mail donors and thanks to you, we are 85 per cent of the way to reaching our goal!


Emergency Response determined I was experiencing a severe intensity heart attack, and that my best option was to go directly to the Cath Lab at Trillium Health

Partners, Mississauga Hospital. If it were not for the seamless efficiency of the STEMI program, Dr. Puley and his amazing team, I wouldn’t be here today.

Every step of the way, I knew I was in good hands – whether it was the surgeon performing the delicate procedure, or the nurses who followed up over the next few

days – I always had complete confidence in the care I was receiving. Thanks to Trillium Health Partners, I’ve made a full recovery.”

New MRIThanks to over 6,000 gifts from the community, a new MRI machine was

delivered to Mississauga Hospital. The new equipment will increase

access to advanced cardiac scans and increase efficiency by reducing

procedure times.

More areas that benefitted from your generosity• Electrophysiology equipment was delivered and will provide precise diagnoses and therapies for patients suffering from an irregular heartbeat.

• Our Cardiac Unit celebrated its first year of TAVI (trans-catheter aortic valve implantation), a complex, minimally-invasive procedure for elderly patients, who are too fragile for open heart surgery.

• The Endoscopy Unit has new equipment that has tripled capacity for examining patients with severe gastro-esophageal reflux disease.

• Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services will soon launch a mobile application for mental health therapy to help our youth. Thanks to the TELUS Community Fund, the app will offer helpful strategies to manage anxiety and stress between therapy appointments.

New Monitoring EquipmentOur Birthing Services welcome over 320 babies each month. Thanks to

community donations, we’ve purchased two new Phillips monitors –

one checks vital signs in new moms, and one monitors their babies.

Your support provides the tools our clinical experts depend on to provide our growing, diverse and elderly population the

specialized care they need. The latest equipment and advanced technology are essential to treat our patients, but most are

not funded by the provincial government. Here are just a few examples of your gifts at work.

Julie leads a fast-paced lifestyle considering the obstacles she has overcome as a child. At eight years old, Julie was diagnosed with a brain tumour and was told she

would not live past the age of nine. However, her strength and courage, along with support from Trillium Health Partners, has enabled her to live life to the fullest.

Growing up, Julie underwent several procedures to relieve the symptoms of her brain tumour and when she was 17, she was referred to Dr. McKenzie and Dr. Duncan

at Trillium Health Partners.

An injury in 2012 aggravated her tumour, sending Julie to Mississauga Hospital’s Emergency Department.

Neurosurgeons, Dr. Kis and Dr. Marmor performed a high-risk, minimally-invasive surgical procedure that relieved the pressure on her brain. Thanks to the advanced

tools and exceptional skill of her medical team, the tumour began to reduce in size.

Over the past 25 years, Julie has spent countless hours at Trillium Health Partners. She has seen a number of outstanding physicians and surgeons who have each

had a positive impact on her life. Julie still comes to our hospital for annual check-ups and is extremely grateful for the advanced technology and expert staff.

Sean & Lynne Seawright Centre for Health EducationIn October 2012, we unveiled the Sean & Lynne Seawright Centre for Health Education at the Mississauga Hospital.

The Centre houses the Medical Education Office and facilities for training the University of Toronto Mississauga

Academy of Medicine undergraduate students. The Seawrights’ generous leadership investment develops teaching

innovation right here in our community.

Gopal Bhatnagar Chair in Cardiac Health System Leadership We are pleased to establish a second research chair for Trillium Health Partners in honour of cardiac surgeon Dr. Gopal

Bhatnagar. During Dr. Bhatnagar’s leadership as Chief of Staff, Trillium Health Partners’ cardiac program earned national

recognition for excellence in leading-edge cardiac surgical procedures, including a first in beating heart surgery.

Pace Law Education AwardThanks to the generous support of Pace Law Firm, 10 individuals received the Pace Law Education Award in 2012, valued at $1,000 each, to further professional

development related to health care best practice.


A precedent-setting, $10-million pledge from The

Volunteers of Trillium Health Centre – the largest

donation in our hospital’s history – includes $5

million to create The Volunteers of Trillium Health

Centre Research Chair in Seniors’ Health. As our first

endowed research position, the Chair will reshape

seniors’ care for many years to come.

The Volunteers of Trillium Health Centre arecommitted to raising funds in support ofSeniors’ Health at our hospital. This year,they have partnered with us and Scotiabankto host our first-ever Scotiabank Bed Race!

Supporting Seniors’ Health


Edward was rushed to the Mississauga Hospital’s Emergency Department after collapsing one morning.

He had been in recovery from a previous surgery, but now found himself struggling to breathe.

The acute care team worked quickly to stabilize him. In the weeks that followed, the expert nursing and

the Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) changed his life. Volunteers, trained through the HELP program,

gave Edward the personalized care that prepared him to make the transition from hospital to home.

“I can’t say enough about the HELP volunteers,” says Marion, Edward’s wife. “Ed was very antsy in hospital, but they were so patient with him, getting him to eat,

drink and exercise – and even smile again! They saved his life.”

Mental Health First Aid for Seniors’ ProgramIn partnership with the Mental Health Commission of Canada, Trillium Health Partners and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK),

a new Mental Health First Aid for Seniors’ Program will help seniors in need of immediate care. The course will teach participants how to offer mental health first

aid to a senior in mental distress. Expected to launch in 2014, the service holds potential for widespread benefit. Thank you GSK for supporting this vital need!

Hospital Elder Life ProgramOur Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP), piloted at Mississauga Hospital for patients aged 70 and older, has now become a permanent service at Trillium Health

Partners. Run by clinical experts and hospital volunteers, HELP specifically aims to reduce delirium and physical decline. Thanks to the support of Scotiabank and

their focus on innovative care for seniors, initiatives like HELP build independence, ensure safe transitions, and prevent hospital re-admissions. Thank you

Scotiabank for giving 110%!

Supporting Mental Health

Adolescent Mental Health Outreach ProgramOur Adolescent Mental Health Outreach Program, now in its third successful year, has made great strides in helping our at-risk youth. Thanks to a leadership

investment and continued support from AstraZeneca, the program continues to bring at-home intervention to support our youth, their families and caregivers.

We are enormously grateful to AstraZeneca for this initiative.

When everyday heroes come together to support our hospital at Foundation and community events, anything is possible!

Together, we raised more than $1.6 million that will directly impact our patients.

Foundation and Community Events

Trillium DiwaliBringing the community together in celebration of the South Asian Festival of Lights, Trillium

Diwali is Canada’s first and largest Diwali fundraiser. The 11th annual Trillium Diwali was held on

October 19, 2012 at Pearson Convention Center in Brampton. Over 1,000 community-minded

individuals, corporations and medical leaders from across the GTA indulged in the rich South

Asian culture, planned and implemented by a dedicated committee of volunteers.

In 2012, our Trillium Diwali supporters raised over $740,000 for life-saving endoscopy services.

Since its inception, Trillium Diwali has raised over $5.6 million for critical projects at Trillium

Health Partners.

Pro-Am Golf Tournament In September 2012, golf pros and everyday heroes teed up at our 20th Anniversary Pro-Am, raising

over $220,000 for the Hazel McCallion Centre for Heart Health. Thank you Scotiabank and all our

generous sponsors and participants! Together, you make a tremendous difference in the lives of

those who turn to Trillium Health Partners for the very best cardiac care.

Bike 4 BettyOur ride and family festival was held on May 27, 2012. Riders, families and friends all went the

extra mile to raise over $200,000 for cancer care at the Betty Wallace Women's Health Centre and

Betty & Buster Lockwood Cancer Detection and Treatment Centre.


Community Heroes We are so fortunate to have a community of dedicated heroes supporting

us through events of their very own! From gala dinners and golf

tournaments, to walk-a-thons and barbeques, each initiative benefits the

care patients receive. This year, over $300,000 was raised for Trillium Health

Partners, thanks to our community-led events.

We are excited to welcome partnerships with clubs and community groups

such as Tomorrow’s Community of Hope, who generously pledged to raise

$250,000 in support of cardiac care at Trillium Health Partners.

Pasta FestaIn September 2012, a handful of Trillium physicians traded their scrubs and

lab coats for aprons and chef hats and dished up a gourmet meal at Pasta

Festa! Generous community supporters gathered together for some

delicious food, delightful wine and great company. The evening was a great

success and raised more than $123,000 for neuroscience care! The event,

which celebrated its 9th year, was made possible by event co-Chairs, Dr.

Dominic Rosso and Foundation board member Ralph Chiodo, along with a

team of dedicated committee members.
